Effective on redness but not as good as l'occitane ultra comforting cream

I developed dry type Rosacea a few years back & although not as bad as it once was thanks to Environ collostrum gel I do still have the occasional flare-ups & my cheeks & temples had never really lost the red tinge. I'd been trying to find a cream or lotion for some time which would help counteract the redness & nothing really worked apart from l'occitane ultra comforting cream which is a wee bit expensive. Looking through the No7 range I noticed the calm skin redness relief balm & so with my £5 off No7 products voucher decided to invest my £13 & hope for the best.
The balm comes in a 30ml pump dispenser glass bottle. It is white in colour, fluid in it's consistency & has a very mild pleasant fragrance. It is designed to soothe & strengthen delicate, easily irritated skin.

On first use I noticed an immediate soothing sensation but not much improvement on redness. I've now been using for 3 weeks & my red cheeks have muted down to a paler shade of pink so it has definately done some good. Unfortunately though it doesn't do much in the way of moisterising so a moisteriser is definately needed on top if your skin is dry. Also at the normal price of £18 it is a little expensive & unless I get another £5 off voucher I think I'd rather invest the £5 more & buy the l'occitane ultra comforting cream which not only seems to give more immediate results but also adds moisture.

      An impressive product

I have suffered with redness on my cheeks for years now and it's something that makes me very self conscious. I have tried various products over the years that claim they will calm the skin and I've even used green make-up that will supposedly neutralize the colour of my skin, but nothing has worked.

I spotted this No.7 product online and toyed with the idea of buying it over a couple of months. It isn't particularly cheap, and having tried so many products to help combat this problem that simply have not worked, I was sceptical about it and wasn't really keen to throw more money down the drain.

The product claims to 'calm rosy or uneven skin tones' of which I have both. They say that worn under moisturiser 'this product works instantly to calm the skin, strengthen and hydrate so that even delicate sensitive skin is left soft smooth and comfortable.' There are also some statistics presented on the bottle, saying that after 2 weeks 87% of women said their skin was more comfortable, 82% said their complexion was more even and 70% felt that their skin was less reactive.

The balm comes in a small glass bottle and when I say small I mean it, as for your money you get just 30ml of product. The bottle is frosted glass and has a plastic pearly lid. The pump from which you dispense the product is white plastic but the neck of the bottle is shiny gold which does make the packaging look a little more luxurious.

To use you simply massage the product into clean skin morning and night. The product is designed to be worn underneath moisturiser, but I must admit I don't usually bother putting a moisturiser on before bed, so at night I just apply the product alone and I've never had any problems with doing it that way.

I find it quite surprising that No.7 have called this a balm, as really it's more of a serum or a lotion than anything. It's white in colour and has a fairly light, runny consistency. There is a subtle scent to the balm - it's quite a feminine and I'd even say classy smell - but it's so light it's barely noticeable.

When applying to the skin I find that I need two pumps of the balm - one for each cheek. When I first bought the product I was applying it to my entire face, which took around 4-5 pumps but I soon realised that the product was going to run out pretty fast if I carried on like that, so now I just apply to the problem areas. The balm sinks in pretty quickly so you do have to be fast when rubbing it in. I find it leaves my skin feeling soft and silky and even slightly moisturised and yet there is no stickiness or residue from it at all.

I suppose the big question is 'does it work?' Well I would have to say yes it does...to an extent. Firstly in terms of making my skin feel more comfortable, I'd have to say that it works. Then again, any moisturiser does that for me, so I'm not particularly impressed by that aspect.

Making my skin more even and less rosy was the real reason I wanted to try this product and it has done that. I'm not saying it is a cure, and the redness has by no means disappeared completely, however the tone of my skin is a lot less ruddy than it was before I started using this product. I didn't find the results were instant, but by applying this twice daily, I noticed a difference within around a fortnight. I'm not going to say the redness has disappeared completely and I now have skin that looks flawless, but the redness has definitely toned down a lot and I think I look healthier as a result.

The claims to make skin less reactive don't really apply to me, as although I do suffer from eczema I never get it on my face, and it's very rare that I will have any sort of reaction to a facial skin care product.

A 30ml bottle of this product costs £18 and is exclusive to Boots. I personally find this to be very expensive, as my 30ml has lasted only around 6 weeks and is now nearly empty. Over the course of a year that is around £150 - a hell of a lot of money to be shelling out and even with one of the regular £5 off discounts Boots dole out, you're still talking over £110 a year by my calculations.

Cost aside, I'd have to say that this is a good product. It's definitely the most effective anti-redness product that I've ever used and for that I have to give it 4 stars.

A fantastic product that helps to keep my face looking lovely & smooth and redness free.

I am prone to skin flare ups from time to time and I sometimes have problems with my cheeks looking red & a little angry so I am always on the look out for something that can help me with this problem area.

Boots No 7 Calm Skin Redness Relief Gel comes in a glass bottle that is 30ml in size and has a thick glass cap. Once I remove the cap it's a white press down dispenser pump and one medium press gives just enough of the gel to massage on to both of my cheeks and just across my nose. It takes only a minute to rub in to my face and within a minute or two I really can feel the skin tightening a little and this makes me feel confident that the gel is working.

I use this twice a day whenever I am suffering from red/angry looking facial skin and I find that within a few days the flare-up has disappeared almost completely and my skin feels and looks a lot healthier and smoother.

There is not any fragrance to the gel (that I can smell anyway) and it's very easy to apply. It does do what I want it to do and although it's £17.10 for a 30ml bottle mine has lasted me over a year so far as I only use it when I need to. Also, my Mum suffers with red cheeks and split veins and she has used this in the past with quite a difference in appearance to her facial skin.

I would recommend this product but may not buy it again once I have run out as it's pretty pricey and I'd like to find something similar at a far more reasonable price. If you decide to purchase this then look out for 3 for 2 offers on No 7 which happen fairly regularly or even just free gift offers when you spend over a certain amount. I am rating this 4/5 and have marked it down one star because of the price.
