Botanics Shine Away Ionic Clay Mask
Advantages: Helps combat breakouts
Disadvantages: really, really drying -be wanred you will need moisturiser!
In the past month or so Boots have had a massive re-brand across the whole Botanics range by making the packaging sleeker and more attractive as well as re-formulating some of the product line. Enticed by the rebrand (as well as 30% off that Boots were offering as part of the re-launch of the range!) I picked up the "iconic clay mask" as well as a few other skincare products in the hope that it would help combat my blemish prone skin.
As a brand Botanics utilises the power of plants to help balance out skin and uses organic ingredients whenever possible. This is really evident when you look at the ingredients in the clay mask as there are only 5 ingredients! The active ingredients being natural oceanic clay (which is meant to draw out impurities) and willowbark (a natural source of salicylic acid which will help calm and clear breakouts).
When I used the mask for the first time I expected a thick consistency but to my surprise the mask was rather watery and I ended up getting clay all over my clothes! Now I know better and I shake the tube before using so the water has a chance to combine with the clay! Once this has been done you do indeed get a thick clay formula but it is still a little bit messy to apply. You simply smooth the mask all over your face and let it draw out the impurities from the skin for 10 minutes. As it dries you can see some of the oily being drawn out of your pores which is both satisfying and gross. After 10 minutes just rinse off with warm water to reveal deeply cleansed skin.
Once I have rinsed the mask off my skin feels really clean but it does feel a little tight which is quite amazing seeing as I have really oily skin! I would probably not recommend this to people with dry skin as it would aggravate the skin as it is so drying. I also would not recommend using this mask if you have really sensitive skin or are battling a breakout and your skin is feeling raw. I have done this in the hope that it would take all the oil away but it made my skin feel really tender afterwards as well as looking really red.
What this mask is great for is when you feel your skin has simply built up a lot of oil and its feeling congested. I use it once a week for this purpose as I don't think even my oily skin would not be able to handle more than that as it is such a deep cleanse. It definitely has helped lessen the length and magnitude of breakouts as it really roots out impurities from pores - my skin has never felt so clean!
This mask is not an essential but it can be handy to have when helping fight oily/blemish prone skin. As I don't use a lot of product and I use it just once a week I think it is great value for money (I bought it on offer at £4.66, with the full price being £6.99 at the time of writing according to Boots.com). However, it is definitely not a luxurious or fun product to use which is a slight draw back. Bearing all these points in mind I don't think I will be repurchasing straight away as I think there are better products that I have yet to discover in my quest for clear skin!
Summary: Good mask for cleaning out congested skin
