On a recent trip to the Champneys Spa I picked up some of their lovely products and one of the items I purchased was their Spa Skin all in one facial wipes. I knew I would be in and out of the pool and the gym and also putting some make up on in between so I wanted to get some wipes to clean my face with in between and these worked out perfectly.
The wipes are said to be perfect to cleanse away make up when your on the go, exactly what I was looking for them to do. According to Champney's, "These soft & smooth face wipes can be used to sweep away impurities and cleanse away make-up when there's just not enough time for your normal routine. With added extracts of ginseng, chamomile, skin conditioners and aloe to help calm and condition the skin they are perfect for late nights, holidays or the gym."
The wipes are packaged really nicely. They are in a fairly small little packet, definitely not as big as a packet of baby wipes but I like this because I can fit them in my bag really easily and they do not take up too much room. at the top of the packet is a plastic lid which you can flip up and down and so the wipes keep nice and fresh when you are not using them but then it is really also to pull one wipe out at a time.
The wipes are fairly small but then I think they are the perfect size for the face and don't really need them to be any bigger than they are. The wipes are not too thick and what I really like about them is that they are moist, moist enough to take all my make up off and really clean my face but not too moist that they are wet and then aren't really effective.
I love the feeling my face gets after swiping this wipe all over my face, it just feels really fresh and clean and instantly cooling which is lovely. I do feel like all my make up and dirt comes off when I use them and I don't have to rub and press too hard. My face feels really clean and that fresh feeling lasts quite a while afterwards.
The wipes have a bit of a smell, not too strong but you can definitely smell the chamomile and it gives you a bit of a herby, fresh smell which is lovely. The smell transfers to my face briefly but then once the wipe has been used and my face has dried I can't smell it anymore.
The wipes are a little expensive, they cost £5 for a pack of 25 but for cleaning my face on the go they are a really nice beauty product.
I use facial wipes and over the years I have tried lots of different types. I love Champneys and it was because of this that I was prompted to try these Champneys facial wipes.
What I love about facial wipes is the convenience of them. If I have had a long day at work or I am pushed for time I know that my skin is always going to be kept clean & healthy with my regime of skin care wipes or cleansers, toners and moisturisers. My face is something that is on display in my job every day, like most customer facing people I guess, so I like to try and look my best wherever possible.
The first thing that caught my eye about this product was the packaging, it has a pretty floral style pattern to it that is a pale purple colour and makes me instantly think of lavender and generally things that are soothing. The packing for these is really the standard kind of wipes packaging with a plastic 'pouch' and a plastic flip top lid stuck on to the packet. Open the lid up to pull out a wipe and each one is interleaved so that it may be removed and then leave the start of the next one poking out. The packaging was simple enough to use, the lid opened well and after a few tugs the label was removed allowing me to access the wipes within, standard packaging really.
The wipes themselves are of a reasonable size and fit in the palm of my hand, just like most facial wipes I have used before. The wipe was a reasonable thickness without being wasteful but I did notice that their appearance was a little bit tidy with uneven edges which I felt was a little strange for what I usually consider to be quite a premium brand.
The scent of this wipe was what let it down a little for me. I associate Champneys with delightfully scented products that allow my skin to smell delicious for hours after use, however, I did not notice any particular scent from this, just a plain clean kind of scent, and if it weren't for them making my skin look and feel clean I probably would not have continued with the packet.
I only use these wipes for the purpose of cleansing my face and have been following up usage with a moisturiser. My skin can feel a little tight after using these and I find that a moisturiser fixes this and allows me to go to bed or start the day with skin that feels wonderfully soft and smooth.
Overall I would definitely rate these wipes as an average 3/5. They do remove quite a lot of the traces of make-up that I wear but I have found that I would really have to scrub to remove my mascara, non-waterproof too, and this is a real disappointment for me to be honest. I like the clean scent of the wipes but really they are just glorified standard wipes and they feel no different to the cheap ones I can pick up in most high street make-up selling shops such as Boots, Superdrug or Savers. I would recommend them only if you get them considerably cheaper than the £5.00 price tag (although currently on 3 for the price of 2 along with a range of other Champneys products at Boots stores).
I am a real fan of facial wipes, as I find them very convenient to use and I love the refreshing and cooling sensation that they deliver to my skin. At this present moment in time I own approximately twelve different packets, as I always replenish my stocks when I see a particular brand either on offer or retailing at a fairly low price. Whilst the product I am discussing today is not what I would class as reasonably priced, several weeks ago I decided to treat myself with some of the points that I had accumulated on my Boots Advantage Card and this review talks about my experience with using Champneys Spa Skin All In One Facial Wipes.
APPEARANCE OF THE PRODUCT
If you are not familiar with this brand I would advise that the packaging on their wide range of beautiful toiletries has the appearance of sheer luxury and high quality. We are presented with a pack of 25 wipes, which are contained within plastic packaging with a calming lilac background decorated with a white circular pattern. In the centre of the packaging is an oblong shaped white toughened plastic area upon which we are able to witness the familiar golden coloured Champneys logo. The upper section of the plastic area consists of two hinges with the lower side offering a fairly large lip that allows us to easily lift open lid to reveal a pull back sealed label.
Whilst every brand of wipes that I have previously used is fairly easy to open I would advise that I considerably struggled with these, as the label was stuck solid and simply refused to budge. It took several almighty tugs where the label was fully removed as opposed to pulled back, so I simply discarded it, particularly as I had the plastic lid to keep my wipes clean and moist. Whilst I often feel that this style of packaging is rather wasteful, I would advise that the lid clicked tightly back into place thus ensuring my remaining wipes stayed sufficiently moist until I needed to use the very last one.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH USING THE WIPES
The opening is of a fairly good size and easily allowed me to remove one of the white coloured wipes, which measure 18½ cm x 16 cm. I have to advise that I was a little disappointed by their appearance, as they looked very ordinary and due to the price, which I will provide at the end of this review, I had expected a far superior quality. The wipe wasn't particularly thick and resembled that of the wipes that I generally use, which cost a fraction of the price. The appearance is slightly woven, but something I have never witnessed with any other brand of wipes is that they were not evenly cut and some of the edges seemed rather lopsided. I was rather surprised, as whilst this is only a very minor detail that has absolutely no bearing on the wipe itself, I felt their appearance was a little shoddy, particularly due to their price or perhaps it's just me simply being too critical!
I'm a real fan of Champneys, particularly as each and every one of their products that I have used has offered a stunning fragrance. I would advise that I could witness a very delicate aroma, which I believe to be chamomile, but it was barely evident and I felt somewhat cheated, as I had expected the product to be of an exceptionally high quality. The wipes are sufficiently moist and not overly so, which is something I find unbearable when I have excess liquid running down my face. The sensation the wipes offered me was identical to that of the majority of brands I have tried and that is cooling, refreshing and consequently, my skin felt wonderfully clean. A very slight aroma transferred to my skin, but seemed to vanish in a short space of time. On the reverse of the packaging we are informed that the wipes contain extracts of ginseng, chamomile and aloe, which are intended to calm and condition the skin.
The wipes are intended for cleansing, toning and moisturising and whilst my skin was left feeling squeaky clean I would argue with Champneys' claim that they deliver moisturising properties, as unfortunately, this was not the case. There are many cleansing products that leave my skin feeling a little tight and this was something I experienced around the edges of my mouth, my cheeks and neck. Whilst I cannot state that the wipes are particularly drying, it was necessary for me to apply my favourite moisturiser directly after use.
I also tried using the wipes for the removal of my mousse foundation, eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara and as per Champneys' advice I closed my eyes whilst carrying out this task. Whilst the wipes did not cause my skin to feel greasy or oily I was very disappointed as both their appearance and texture were very similar to the considerably cheaper brands that I have used. Consequently, I am of the opinion that I paid a premium price solely for the golden coloured Champneys' name on the top of the packet. It is extremely doubtful I will purchase these wipes again, particularly with their £5 price tag for a pack of 25. Although they were adequate for my needs, they were not exceptional and for those reasons they receive only 3 stars from me.
INGREDIENTS AND OTHER INFORMATION
As with all products of this nature there is an extremely lengthy list of ingredients, which for obvious reasons I do not intend copying into this review. I can confirm that I suffered no adverse reactions when using other than the fact that I was rather annoyed that I had wasted 500 of my well earned Boots Advantage Card points. The wipes should be used within 3 months of opening and unfortunately, the used wipes and packaging are not recyclable.
These wipes can be purchased from branches of Boots and at the time of writing (May 2011) if you spend £8 on Champneys products you will be able to pick up a free travel size gift set containing 4 good-sized products.
I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
