Cien Moisturising Aquarich Facial Wash
Advantages: Cheap; effective
Disadvantages: Smells a bit masculine
NOTE: I asked Dooyoo to add the exfoliating version of this facial scrub but they have added it under the description 'facial moisturiser'.
I'm not much of shopper so I tend to bulk buy those things that can stand unopened in a cupboard for a while if I see them at a good price. This must explain why face scrubs suddenly became really expensive without me noticing. At almost a fiver a pop I couldn't continue to buy the Johnsons products as much as I like them; I decided to try the more modestly priced exfoliating facial wash by Cien for Lidl.
I wasn't expecting great things with a face wash priced at just £1.20 but I figured that if I didn't like it as a product for my face I could always use it as a body scrub, or even for softening the dry skin on my feet until it ran out.
According to the manufacturer this facial wash has been formulated to make it suitable for daily use and the blurb on the tube claims it gives 'deep cleansing for clearer skin'. It comes in a 150ml plastic tube with a flip cap which is user friendly and very easy to open and close with one hand when in the shower. According to Lidl the plastic of the cap is recyclable, but the plastic used for the tube is not currently recyclable.
There are two Cien facial washes available; a moisturising wash (comes in a tube with royal blue detail) and this exfoliating wash which has the image in a pale turquoise. The two products do look very similar so check if you have a preference. Although this one is the exfoliating wash it does contain something called 'Aquarich' which has moisturising properties. It's described as being for 'normal and combination skin'.
There are no special instructions for use for this facial wash; simply massage into wet skin in circular movements and rinse off with plenty of warm water. It's a clear gel which appears to be slightly turquoise because of the micro grains. I think this has quite a 'masculine' aroma, the sort of fragrance you get in cheap-ish male grooming bathing products where no individual elements stand out. This is the only downside to this product for me; the aroma does tend to hang around for a while so I'd rather it was something I liked better.
At first I found that the residue was difficult to rinse off, even using lots of water, but then I discovered that if I scrubbed my face just a little bit longer it became easier to rinse off. The grains are very fine (miniscule if you compare it to those big blue ones in the original Clean and Clear) but I can feel them gently removing old skin. After rinsing my skin feels refreshed and clean. It isn't the most moisturising wash I've ever used but it certainly doesn't make my skin feel dry or tight. It's effective at keeping blackheads at bay and you can give yourself a good scrub without ending up red faced.
This product contains numerous ingredients, all listed in tiny print. Unless you check each one, or you have a scientific background you're not likely to know what all of them are. Some could be quite harmless but look intimidating when written with their 'proper' names. I was interested in 'avena strigosa seed extract' which turns out to be (with a little help from naturalhero.co.uk) to be extracted from black oats which have high antioxidant properties. It surprised me that they would use a natural ingredient in a cheap product like this and it improved my overall opinion.
I've been buying this for eighteen months years now and I'm very happy with it. I don't use it daily because I find it effective enough when used every other day but it's good to know that I could. For the money I think this is exceptional value; it might not suit everyone but at £1.20 it's not going to break the bank to find out.
Summary: A good value facial scrub that can be used daily
