Clarins Beauty Flash Balm
Advantages: Does what it says on the tin
Disadvantages: Not an overly pleasant fragrance, screw top on tube
Wandering around Boots one day, passing time before I was due to meet a friend for lunch, I ambled past the Clarins stand and, as something caught my eye, found myself turning back for a better look. The something that caught my eye was Beauty Flash Balm promotion stand, triggering a vague memory of having read a rave review of it in a magazine several weeks before.
I decided to treat myself, as my pale skin is the bane of my life and I'm always looking for ways to make it look fresher and more alive. It cost me about £22 a couple of years ago (but at the time was on a promotion so I got a handful of mini-Clarins products to try as well...none of which I actually ended up trying as they were all so small they just found their way to the back of my drawer) and those being the glorious pre-mortgage days of my life I splashed out!
It comes in quite a small (50ml) white tube, with the distinctive Clarins red branding, and - if you've read previous reviews you'll know this is a personal pet hate of mine - a screw top. I much prefer flip tops on products like this, hand cream, body lotion etc so you don't have to screw a top back on either a) with a blob of cream in your hand that runs the risk of dropping onto my lovely carpet or b) with your hands covered in cream. But anyway, that's my personal gripe and one that you'll probably hear a lot if you read my other reviews!
I had a vague recollection of the magazine review of the Flash Balm promising glowing skin making you look radiant and healthy and I wasn't the least bit disappointed.
When I first squirted a splodge out onto my fingers I started to worry as the lotion was quite a deep peach colour and, as I've mentioned, my skin is very pale (red hair, blue eyes, freckles...no suntan for me!) so I was concerned that it would make me look like I'd had a bad fake tan. I tentatively applied the cream to my face and instantly felt a gentle tightening of my skin. Looking in the mirror I expected to me with that "shocked" look of plastic surgery, but there was no visible difference in that respect.
What was different though, is that my skin was actually glowing...and it looked natural to boot! You couldn't even tell that I'd put anything on my skin and, thankfully, there was no trace of fake tan! It says to apply foundation and your normal makeup over the top of it, but it made my skin so radiant that I didn't want to cover it up with anything else, so left out the concealer and foundation and just went sraight for the eye makeup.
I don't use this product often and am still on my first tube of it, but when it runs out I'll definitely be buying more. If I look in the mirror on a morning and feel blah then I reach for this tube and I ALWAYS use it for big events like weddings etc. Now that I'm more used to it I don't put it all over my face, just over my cheeks and across my nose and forehead and this is plenty.
The absolute best part of using this was one gloomy, dismal depressing January morning when I'd decided to use it as a little pick me up...I bumped into a friend and she said I was looking really well and asked if I'd been on holiday! I could have kissed her, but instead waited until I got home and kissed my little tube of Flash Balm instead!
Having raved about this I feel like I should try and find something negative about it (apart from it being much less affordable for me now that I come complete with a mortgage!) but the only thing I can find that I'm not overly keen on is the fragrance. Whilst it doesn't smell bad per say, nor does it smell nice and as though you'd love to wipe it all over your face. It's a difficult smell to describe...it's not chemical, it's more like a makeup smell. Anyway, as I said, it's not bad, it's just not scrummy either and it does tend to linger for a while.
But, that is a very small price to pay for people thinking I've just come back from holiday in January and as long as people keep telling me how well I look when I'm wearing it, then I'll keep using ut!
