Advantages: reduces spot size, good price, clears skin
Disadvantages: does not live up to all claims
~~What is it~~
Clean & Clear are a brand that specialises in achieving clearer skin, calming skin and reducing blemishes. Personally, I think their brand is aimed more so at teenagers due to their packaging being fairly young, opting for silver and purple, also their adverts often have teenagers in them.
This particular product is their advantage spot treatment gel. The packaging has changed quite a lot since the photo showed and it is now in a slim, little tube with a thin nozzle which is then presented in a box.
It claims to be a fast action formular that has immediate action, helps reduce spots within 4 hours and also helps to keep spots away with daily usage.
~~Price and Avaliability~~
This product is priced in the £5 region, my particular one cost £4.59, however have also seen it priced slightly higher and lower. I think this is a fairly competitive price for a spot treatment gel as it is considerably cheaper than that of Clinique and Freederm, yet the price still allows it to compete with that of Boots / Superdrug own brands.
I bought mine in Boots, though they are also avaliable in Superdrg, large supermarkets and can be bought cheaper online, so it is quite widely avaliable and shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of.
~~Using / Applying the product~~
The spot treatment gel has a very thin nozzle, which I find easier to use as it means you are able to squeeze out a smaller and more precise amount each time, which means you are unlikely to waste any of the product. When squeezed out the gel is a clear/white in colour and looks the same in consitency as you would expect any spot treatment gel to be. It was not too thin so that it would seem like it would not do anything and neither was it too thick so it seemed greasy or that it would be obvious on the skin.
The spot treatment gel does have a scent to it, one that I found to be fairly pleasant. It was quite subtle, but smelt fresh and ever so slightly fruity. It did not have the same chemical/ medicated smell to it that some other spot treatment gels do and instead I found it quite refreshing.
To apply, you just need a small amount and apply it thinly to the area of concern. The spot treatment gel feels relativley cool when you first apply, but it does not have the same stinging/ tingling sensation to it that I have come to recognise with some spot treatment gels. When first applied the product looks relatively shiney, however, after 30 seconds or so it begins to dry clear on the skin and it is not obvious that you have applied anything there. The only way that this gel becomes obvious once applied is if you apply make up over the top as then the gel starts to look flakey and looks slightly white in colour.
If I applied it over spots that I had picked (which I know I shouldn't!) or more 'open' ones, I did notice that there was slightly more of a stinging sensation and was not as soothing as it had been to apply on spots that I had just left.
This spot treatment definitley had some effect on my skin and blemishes, I am very aware that it did not live up to all of it's claims, yet I was still very happy with what it did manage to do.
I first began to notice difference about 2 hours after applying if I had applied it to an 'under the skin' spot. This is because I can often feel them, or they sometimes have that 'throbbing' feeling with them, however, if I had applied this over the top I no longer felt this sensation and the spot definitley felt less 'painful'- if that is the right word!
I don't think that it managed to reduce spots within 4 hours, although it did make them less red and therefore were more concealable, it did not actually reduce the spot size within this time. Nonetheless if I applied the spot treatment gel at night time, when I woke up in the morning I could see that the spot size had considerably reduced in size. In some cases, where it was only a slight blemish to begin with, it had almost completley gone by the morning and there was near enough no trace of it.
As for the spot treatment gel help to keep spots away, I am not entirely convinced. It has definitley helped the overall appearance of my skin / blemishes and in some areas where I am particuarly prone to breakouts, they have not been as often, however I am not sure that this is entirely down to this product. I have had less breakouts since using this product, though it has not actually kept them away and this is with daily use, sometimes even using the product more than once a day.
-Cheap to buy
-Reduces spot size overnight
-Gives overall appearance of clearer skin
-Does make breakouts less often
-Does not entirely keep spots away
-Takes longer than four hours to reduce spot size
~~My thoughts / Would I reccomend?~~
Overall, I am fairly impressed with this product as it has performed just as well, if not better than some other spot gels that I have used which I have paid more for. I was pleased to see that it did actually manage to help clear up my skin and definitley gave me the overall appearance of clearer skin.
Though it did not live up to all of it's claims, such as the reduce the spot size in 4 hours, I was pleased to note that it did do this, even if not in this time period. This does make me think that this product should not be called 'fast action' nonetheless the fact that the spots / blemishes are barely there in the morning is very pleasing to me, as some spot treatment gels I have used havd barely done anything over night.
I would be happy to buy this product again, especially at the price it is at. I think that for the price the product performs very well and due to the fact it is very competitvley priced I think I would choose this item over my much loved Clinique spot treatment gel.
I am now on my second tube of this spot treatment gel and my first one lasted me for around 3 months, with daily use, sometimes using it more than once a day and therefore I think this also makes it good value for money and is definitley worth it.
I would definitley reccomend this item, as although all it's claims were not met, I often find this to be the case with most spot treatment gels and the fact that this one did consideraly help the appearance of my skin I was very happy with. At the price I think it is worth a go, even if it does not work for you as it is not priced too expensivley.
