~~~~~~ Clearasil Blackhead Control Clearing Pads ~~~~~~
I remember my very first encounter with Clearasil; my older brother brought some home one day when he was a young teen unfortunately suffering a touch of acne. We were sitting in the living room with mum as he demonstrated how dirty the cotton wool was after rubbing it over his face and of course, despite me being a few years younger and not having any spots to speak of at the time, I wanted a go too. I was a bit hooked there and then to be honest as like my brother, my cotton wool was rather dirty I should like to clarify that we were clean children!
Over the years as I got older and I never used Clearasil products, as their price was a bit prohibitive. Mum did buy the bog standard Clearasil lotion for my brother when he was young and still at school but apart from the odd shot of that, that was it.
I found these pads in my local Home Bargains recently for just £1.69 and couldn't resist. I am a bit prone to blackheads but thankfully nothing too severe. After using pore clearing strips and seeing how effective they were I decided to regularly use products aimed at fighting them, and these pads are a part of that.
They aim to work by exfoliating, removing the grot from your face and then purifying and tightening pores to help prevent new blackheads forming.
~~~ Ingredients ~~~
They don't really have any spectacular ingredients to talk about, but they do contain '''natural sea salt''' as their exfoliant, along with one side of the pads having exfoliating beads.
The ingredients list is a chemical feast, but it does contain moisturising and lubricating agents, as well as alcohol and a lot of parabens. Nothing much natural about this product, but then it is not claiming to be so I won't hold this against it!
~~~ First Impressions ~~~
The white, blue and lilac tub contains 60 double sided pads, and I think just generally looks 'clean'. The choice of colours is very clever. We are simply told what the product is and what it does, with all the usual info on the back such as directions and ingredients along with further details about the hows and whys. The pot has a tight fitting screw on lid, and it is important to ensure you replace this properly after use to prevent the pads drying out.
When I first opened the pot, I was struck by the scent - it is exactly how I remember Clearasil! It's fresh, clean and a little bit sweet but not overly so. It is very pleasant and I really enjoy the smell. The pads inside are round, with a little cut out section - this lets you get your finger in easily to remove a pad. The pads are white and nicely moist but not dripping or soaking. One side is smooth and the other has clearly visible raised sections for exfoliating.
~~~ Use & results ~~~
Removing a single pad is surprisingly easy; I was expecting to remove more than one at a time, due to the way they are closely stacked within the pot. To use, I just rubbed the rough side over my entire face, in circular motions, exerting a little extra pressure on areas I am more prone to blackheads. For instance, my chin and the sides of my nose. The exfoliating side of the pads do not feel very rough against your face, although of course they don't feel very soft either. Essentially, they are not uncomfortable to use.
Once finished with the rough side, I flip the pad over and sweep it across my face to purify and tighten pores. Again, this side is not uncomfortable to use and is much softer than the other side. I get a cooling tingly sensation when I use this side which is not unpleasant and helps my face feel clean and revitalised.
When used at the end of the day instead of any other cleansing products, you can clearly see the grime on the pad if you hold it up to the light. I love this, as I have mentioned in many other product reviews I like to see some signs of proof! I do need to use 2 pads for my whole face and neck when used at the end of the day instead of any other cleanser, but I have also used these after a gentle facial wash in the shower in the morning, and find one pad is plenty - they actually foam up slightly when used on a clean face and go much further.
If you wear a full face of make up then I would recommend removing this in your usual way before using these pads.
I didn't notice any visible difference to pore size after using the other side of the pads (so continued using my toner), but since using these in conjunction with my pore clearing strips and general skin care, I have definitely noticed less blackheads forming. I use the strips twice a week on my problem areas, and I use these the other days (not always twice daily though).
You are directed to use these morning and night daily but I actually found my skin was looking red after using them this way (and missing out the strips) for a few days running. My skin was not overly dry or sore though. I think they have the potential to be harsh so perhaps should be used with caution - I would recommend doing as I do, mixing them up with other complimentary products. It is always worth remembering as well that over exfoliating can be harmful and while these are not scratchy feeling against the skin, they are designed to have a slight abrasive effect.
The whole time I use them I can smell their fragrance. It reinforces the fresh feeling and as I said I really enjoy it. Shortly after use though I can no longer detect it which suits me fine.
~~~ Recommend? ~~~
Yep, with some caution. Maybe not if you have very sensitive skin though. These pads leave my skin looking and feeling squeaky clean and when I use them as described they don't dry my skin out loads either; I do need to get my moisturiser on afterward though, but I'm not more desperate for it than with other products.
Since you get 60 pads in the pot, the way I use them they are lasting me a really long time. For £1.69 I can't argue with that, and when I'm all out I really hope Home Bargains still have them as I will definitely be repurchasing. I think a rating of 3.5 stars would be perfect for this product, as I have found them to work for me, but not as directed. Since I can't have half a star I am going for 4 as I have found them better than satisfactory.
Summary: Handy little pads
