Advantages: Glossy, moisturising, sheer subtle colour, can wear over lipstick, big tube
Disadvantages: If you want a lot of colour, this is not for you. Price is not the cheapest
I am a big fan of Clinique's skincare and makeup. All of Clinique's products are hypoallergenic and should be free of irritation for everyone, including those with sensitive skin or who sometimes react badly to cheaper makeup.
The lip glosses come in large 15 ml tube with typical simple Clinique branding. They bear the Clinique C and the product name is written in English and French. The shade name is stated on the back along with the information that they are fragrance free and allergy tested. The tubes have silver screw top lids and slanted applicators inside, allowing you to apply straight to your lips.
The tubes are clear plastic, allowing you to see the lip gloss inside. In my experience the colour of the lipgloss does not really reflect the colour you will get on your lips, so when you look at the range of these at the counter you might think that some are too bright but in fact they are very sheer and subtle. The differences between the shades on the lips is not as marked as you would think from looking at the tube. I therefore definitely don't think it is necessary to collect them all or buy a lot of different ones. I have two tubes of Clinique Superbalm Moisturising Gloss: Grapefruit, which is a very pale pink colour which looks almost clear on the lips and only gives the most subtle wash of colour and Raspberry, which looks dark pinky red in the tube but also only goes on very sheer and subtle, only slightly darker than the Grapefruit shade giving a more noticeable hint of colour but it is still very subtle compared to most coloured lipglosses.
To apply this, I squeeze a little bit of the gloss out on to the applicator and smooth it onto my lips. It feels quite thick but very silky and not too sticky or gunky. Once it is smoothed over the lips I can feel it there while I'm wearing it but it feels moisturising and soothing, not uncomfortable at all and I like to be able to sense something on my lips to be able to tell it has not worn off. As it does have a slightly sticky texture, my hair can end up sticking to it a bit if I go out in windy weather. Although this is annoying, it happens with nearly all lipglosses so it is not a problem unique to this Clinique superbalm lipgloss.
This lipgloss lasts longer on my lips than a lot of cheaper lipglosses. It tends to last well until I eat or drink a lot. It can stay on my lips in good condition for about 5 or 6 hours, which I think is very good for a lipgloss.
As well as wearing it on its own, I often wear it on top of lipsticks or liptints to stop my lips feeling dried out by those products. The lipgloss gives a nice and slightly wet looking shine which can brighten up other lip colours. The moisturising effect definitely does work and make my lips feel more comfortable. I can avoid my lips drying out with lipsticks by adding other cheaper products on top which work just as well, such as Burt's Bees lip balm (see recent review) but the Clinique Superbalm has a slightly different effect as it gives a glossy look, so I do think it's worth having both depending on the look I want.
The lipglosses cost £13.50 which I think is an okay price considering how large the tubes are. I think they are worth it as they feel really nice and moisturising and give a nice, subtle and sheer wash of colour making them appropriate for every day, even when you don't want to look overly made up. If you do want a stronger colour, then you would have to wear a lipstick or tint underneath or try a different and more pigmented lipgloss instead of this.
Summary: A lovely every day gloss for very subtle lip colour
