Advantages: Lives up to its claims & effective remover
Disadvantages: Little on the expensive side
I am now onto my second bottle of Clinique Take the Day Off Make-Up Remover. The first bottle lasted me over six months and I have only just started on this second bottle. I am a fan of Clinique products generally and expected great things from this make up remover which I had read about many times in various beauty magazines (most of which were positive reviews) and I decided to invest in my own bottle to see what all the fuss was about.
As I expected, this product is not cheap to buy. It retails for £11.50 for a 125ml sized bottle. As a regular purchaser of Clinique products, I was expecting it to be around this price mark as most of their products are on the expensive side but generally speaking I have been impressed with the quality of the majority of all the Clinique products I have been fortunate enough to have tried. I initially managed to source a bottle of Take the Day Off Make-Up Remover from an on-line discount beauty store, however, my cousin's friend warned me off the site, claiming they were selling products which were not the genuine article. I finally managed to buy some from Ebay but only managed to get it at a slightly reduced price of £10.
I work in Customer Services and come face to face with clients every. I have to look my best and consequently I wear full-face make up six days a week and this can be pretty hard going on my skin. I needed a product that was going to be able to cope with removing not just the 'normal' foundation etc., but also heavier eye make up and lipstick, without the product being too harsh on my skin. I don't have a particularly sensitive skin but I like to ensure that the products I use are still 'kind and gentle' and won't make me break out in blotches or blemishes.
The reason I was primarily attracted to Clinique's Take the Day Off Make-Up Remover was because it first glance it appeared to tick all the boxes. It claimed to remove every bit of make up, eyes, lips and lashes and was going to be kind to my skin. That, plus, the fact that I am accustomed to this range and have been happy with their products previously when I have used them.
As far as the packaging of this product is concerned, I was initially quite surprised that it doesn't come in a box (as do many Clinique products). It came housed in a rather thick opaque glass bottle, through which I was clearly able to see the contents inside. The liquid looked ever so slightly pale pink and when I removed the top I could not really detect any smell as such.
The first time I used this product was after I had been to a works do and I was wearing a lot of make up. I shook the bottle, as recommended, to disperse the oil based ingredients and poured a small amount onto a cotton pad. It glided over my eye area really well and immediately when I looked at the pad I could see it had removed a lot of the mascara I had been wearing as well as some of the eyeliner and eye shadow at the same time. Another few swipes and I have to say I was suitably impressed with the solution's ability to remove the make up without me having to scrub away at my eyes as I usually have to with my favourite Johnson's Baby Wipes. I then used more liquid and fresh cotton pads to remove the make up from the other eye as well as my lipstick and some foundation.
The only downside to this product (apart from the price tag) is that it left my face, and in particular, my eyes, feeling slightly clogged and greasy. In fact, I have to say that for the first few minutes after removing my eye make up I was left feeling like I was looking through a pair of greasy reading glasses and I had to blink several times before it dispersed and I was able to see clearly again. Having said that though, I'm happy to put up with the slightly greasy feeling because the benefits outweigh this minor disadvantage.
I do love this product because it is so kind and gentle on my skin and it really helps me to avoid tugging and pulling at the delicate area around my eyes. In the past, removing waterproof mascara has been a bit problematic for me and the baby wipes just weren't doing the job properly. I have tried other make up remover wipes and lotions but a lot of them have made my eyes water and caused me a bit of irritation, whereas Clinique's Take the Day Off Make-Up Remover causes me no discomfort whatsoever. It is also really good at removing waterproof mascara, which is just brilliant as far as I am concerned. It is safe to use for contact lens wearer's too and I can really very much recommend it to you as a quality product.
