As you might know if you have read a lot of my previous reviews, I like to use a lot of Clinique skincare products as I find Clinique to be a reliable and good quality brand. This Wash Away Gel Cleanser is something that I use most evenings, as I usually wear full makeup. Wash Away is a make up remover for the whole face and it is designed for oilier skin types (Clinique skin type numbers 3 and 4). If you have drier skin, there is a different product, the Foaming Facial Cleanser, which is recommended for you rather than this one.
=== Packaging ===
Wash Away comes in a chunky plastic tube with a flip top cap. The tube is mainly clear with a blue tint at the top, allowing you to see the blue liquid inside. It is easy to squeeze a bit of product out and control the amount. I only use a small amount (a blob just a bit larger than pea sized is enough) so I find that the 150 ml tube lasts for ages. To give you an idea of how long it lasts, I bought a tube at the end of January and now over 3 months later I still have half of it left. As it is a makeup remover, you obviously only need to use it once a day in the evening and not in the morning.
=== Use and Effectiveness ===
To use this I wet my face and hands, then lather a small amount of the gel on my heads which I rub all over my face. It does not create a huge amount of lather, and it doesn't really create foam or bubbles, but once it is wet and you have rubbed it between your hands it is easy to handle and rub all over the face. The smell of this cleanser is ever so slightly strange and unpleasant. I could not say what it actually smells of, but it is a little bit chemically and medicinal smelling. It does not bother me as I am used to it, but when I first bought it I found the scent a little off putting.
It does a great job of removing makeup from my face. I use a separate makeup remover (Clinique Take The Day Off) for my eye makeup, but Wash Away removes all traces of everything else, including my long wearing foundation (Estee Lauder Double Wear). If I use a normal cleanser straight onto my face without using something to get the makeup off first, I find most cleansers struggle to remove all traces of the makup and can't actually get at the skin to cleanse it properly. Double Wear foundation in particular just does not come off with a normal facial cleanser and if I did not use a makeup remover like Wash Away I would sometimes still find traces of foundation on my cotton pad when using toner or clarifying lotion on my supposedly "cleansed" skin. For this reason I find it important to split my cleaning into two steps - makeup removal and then actual cleansing of my skin once the makeup is gone and the cleanser has a chance to really work on my skin.
I find that using Wash Away allows me to get my face really clean and enables me to get the best out of any cleanser or face wash which I use on my skin afterwards. On the Wash Away tube they recommend following it with the Clinique 3 step routine, including the facial soap, so Wash Away really is only intended as a makeup remover and not to replace a general face wash or cleanser.
I find this an important step and Wash Away does its job of makeup removal very effectively.
=== Overall ===
Although this is not the most exciting product and it does not smell that great, I find it a daily essential and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who uses long wearing makeup, as it allows you to get everything off so that you can then cleanse your skin properly. Don't forget this is for oily skin though, so if you have dry skin get the foaming version, not the gel!
It costs £16 for a tube containing 150 ml. This is more expensive than a lot of face washes, but it really does a different and more thorough job than a lot of face washes which won't fully remove your makeup. Since the tube lasts so long I do think it is worth the money.
