Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil
Advantages: lasts a very long time, worth the money, does make a pretty dramatic difference, multifunctional
Disadvantages: trial and error will be needed to see how much you should use and how best to use it, can go wrong!
After reading about the effects of pure virgin coconut oil on hair, i decided to look for some on the internet, i searched in google for some virgin coconut oil and this came up. Virgin coconut oil just means that it is 100% pure coconut oil with nothing added to it, making it completely natural. The website (coconoil.co.uk) has both organic and virgin coconut oil, the organic comes in 3 different tube sizes, between the prices of £6.50 for the 250g tub, and £90 for a 10kg container....so a fair option of choices depending on how much you want and what you are looking to spend. I went for the virgin coconut oil, only one size is available here, a 460g tub for £8.99, there are bulk buying options which work out a bit less per tub if you decide you would rather stock up.
This coconut oil can be used in cooking as a much more healthy alternative to any other cooking oil, but it can also be used on the skin and hair, i haven't personally tried it on the skin, but its meant to keep it young and moisturised from what i can gather (since i had done a fair bit of reading before deciding to try it out) the 460g tub was a pretty decent size, and i found that coconut oil is one of those things that not only requires you use very minimal amounts, but it seems completely necessary that you only use a little bit, too much and i found my hair would become flat, lank and looked a tad Greasy. This meant that i felt it was pretty good value, i was particularly impressed with the fact that is was free post and packaging, that always makes me feel better about buying anything online.
I have tried im cooking and i find its a lovely alternative to other oils, adds a very small and subtle amount of flavour and is very easy to use. The oil is solid at room temperature and requires heating up to melt, so to just spoon a small amount in a frying pan means threes no chance of spilling any, and spilt oil i always find is a bit of a pain to try and clean up. The main reason i purchased this was for my hair, im constantly searching for a miracle cure to make my hair soft and shiny, but more importantly, to attempt to fix the dramatic damage. I found this difficult to work with and have read all sorts of things for how best to use in your hair, and this left me confused, and thus i had to try a few different things before i got it right, but when i got it right the effects were simply amazing.
I found this difficult to use for hair, as obviously i had to melt it first, and so you will need another small container in which you can spoon a little out and put this container half submerged in a sink of hot water, it does not take long to melt, but i found that this seemed a lot more effort than if you were to simply buy a cream or mask, or serum for the hair, which would obviously be ready to just put right from the container to your hair. The first time i used this i tried putting a small amount on th dry hair, as if it were a serum, but i would not advise this, as it left my hair very greasy, the way no other serum would. I then tried it as a sleep in mask, this some what worked, but it made sleeping uncomfortable as i had to put a towel down over my pillow to avoid making a mess, the towel was nothing like my silk sheets to sleep on and this irritated me, there is also the fact that it seems to make the towel smell odd, which isn't exactly ideal, the effects were reasonably nice, i did notice a little more shine and a tad more manageability, but it just wasn't the miraculous results i had been expecting, in fact, it wasn't even close.
I did not use this product for a while due to the fact that it seemed more effort than it was worth, but then i decided recently to try again, this time on wet hair, i put a very small amount on my hair just after i got out the shower, only on the ends as oil on your roots will always make it seem greasy, and i towel dried my hair, this time i was extremely happy with the results, it seemed to protect against the damage of my heat products, and my hair looked healthy, and despite the fact i knew secretly that it was not healthy, i still felt very happy about this miraculous mirage or shiny healthy glossy hair. I think that everyone's hair is different and some will find a different way of using this oil will work best for them, and some may find they don't like it at all, but then you can always try it with your skin, or use it up to cook with if you come to that conclusion. In the tub the smell was extremely weak, i was hardly able to smell it, but once my hair was dry it had a subtle but still some how clear smell of coconut, i am very happy that i tried this product, despite all the trial and error efforts involved, the product is well worth the money due to the tiny amounts you need to use.....the only problem i had was that if you accidentally put too much in the hair, the only way to rectify your mistake is to re-wash....always a nightmare.
Summary: worth buying, even if you decide you dont like it on your hair it has other functions
