Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil
Advantages: A cheap, natural and effective hair treatment.
Disadvantages: Is a little greasy so can stain pillows if used overnight.
Following a disastrous haircut/bleaching job, I have been desperately scouring the net in the search of products that can restore my hair to it's former glory and/or help my hair to grow five inches overnight.
While I have been unable to find a product, apart from hair extensions, which can aid this miraculous growth, I have stumbled across an array of products which have significantly helped my damaged tresses. Following one google search, I discovered a number of sites/blogs all raving about the benefits of coconut oil. I had never heard about this product before, but I was desperate so I decided to give it a whirl.
I found the product on Amazon, and it cost nearly £9 for a generous 460g. I decided to purchase the virgin coconut oil as I read somewhere that it is most effective in it's most pure form. I was quite surprised to read on the packaging that it can also be used for cooking purposes, I assume you would use it in replacement of more common oils such as olive or sunflower, although I have not experimented with this as yet!
The oil is in a solid form at room temperature, and so I find it easier to melt it a little before using it. In order to do this I place the entire tub in warm water until it melts a little.
Following a little internet research it appears that you can use the oil in a number of different ways. Some seem to use it as a conditioner, while others leave it in their hair in the place of a serum. I have found that my hair is far too thin and greasy to leave in my hair, and I have to make sure all residue is removed to avoid the chip fat look! I apply a small amount to dry hair and slowly rub it into the roots before smoothing it down the hair. I then leave it in my hair for at least half an hour, and once a week I like to leave it in overnight. There is obvously a coconut fragrance to the oil, however it is not offensive in any way and does not leave an unpleasant smell in my hair.
To remove the oil I just wash my hair as normal with shampoo then apply a tiny amount of conditioner, too much conditioner and it's too oily. I have to warn that a couple of times I didn't wash it out properly, and the only way to rectify this is to wash it again.
I have been using this product for four months and I still have half a tub left, so it offers excellent value for money. I would probably have purchased at least three deep conditioning treatments by this point. After using the oil, and washing it out properly, my hair feels light and healthy. In addition, I have had a couple of compliments the day after I have used it regarding how shiny my hair looks.
I can't state that this product is 100% responsible for improving the health of my hair as I have been using a couple of different products, but my hair definately feels better after using it as a treatment and that is good enough for me! I would estimate that this product will last about 5-6months if you use it once or twice a week, which is excellent value for money. I will definately repurchase when it runs out. I would recommend this product for anyone who has dry/damaged hair, or anyone who wants to give their hair a bit of a treat.
Summary: A lovely hair treatment!
