Coconoil Virgin Coconut Oil
Advantages: Good value. smells nice, moisturising and softens skin, natural , tastes ok
Disadvantages: Overpowering when used in cooking
I recently read a magazine article about the benefits of coconut oil and was really impressed.
I have got quite dry skin and I decided to buy some of this to use as a moisturiser as it's natural and probably better for my skin than a majority of other moisturisers. It can also be used for cooking as well as for skin care and it is marketed as the healthiest cooking oil around as it is naturally cholesterol and sugar free. As well as this it also has great benefits when used on hair and it's a very versatile product.
I bought my tub of this from amazon but it's also available from a wide range of other shops including health food stores. I paid around a tenner for my 460 gram tub which seems quite expensive but the tub is full to the brim and a little goes a long way - I have had my tub for around three weeks and used the oil on my skin daily and there is still over 3/4 of the tub left so in my opinion it is excellent value for money.
The circular tub that the coconut oil comes in is quite bulky and it's made of a thick and sturdy plastic. The screw on lid is green and the tub itself is white with green writing stating the product and brand name. The nutritional information is listed on the back as well as information about the product. The oil is pure virgin coconut oil from Sri Lanka and it is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. It is cold pressed and it contains lauric acid which naturally occurs. Lauric acid is a fatty acid which has many benefits - it is an antibacterial and helps clear up skin infections and acne.
The coconut oil itself is white. It is solid in consistency which makes getting it out of the tub a little difficult. I usually scrape it out or use a spoon to get a little out. I find that a tablespoon sized blob is enough for most of my body and it melts as soon as it comes into contact with my skin. Obviously it is very greasy and it leaves my skin shiny but it leaves the skin feeling instantly soft and smooth. After 3 weeks of using it daily I have noticed a difference in my skin - it's much softer and it looks healthier and I've not had any patches of dry skin or eczema which I usually get once in a while on my wrists and ankles.
I've also used this on my hair. It left it feeling amazing! The effects were noticeable for a few days after I used it and it provided a noticeable increase in shine as well as making it feel nice and soft. I have also used this for cooking and while it is yummy in stir fries it does taste quite strong and it doesn't taste right with a lot of foods. I tried it in a smoothie as suggested on the tub and it wasn't very nice to be honest, it just tastes greasy and overpowering but I think maybe I used a little too much - I used half a teaspoon with 500ml of soya milk. The calorie content is high but as I only need to use a little when cooking etc this doesn't bother me and it is healthy fats anyway.
Overall this is a versatile product and it has had a noticeable effect on my skin. Recommended.
