WHAT IS IT?
A scrub mainly designed for teenage skin but is also effective on older skin suffering from similar problems. It is a duo product and can be used as a straightforward scrub or left on the skin as a masque.
HOW DO YOU USE IT?
To use as a scrub dampen skin and massage across your face using circular movements, rinse well and pat your skin dry. As a masque you need to again dampen your skin then apply in a thick layer, allow to sit on your skin for up to thirty minutes then rinse.
IS IT ANY GOOD?
As a scrub this is a very good product, the cleanser is filled with tiny micro beads which you can't see but can feel clearing your skin as you cleanse. As it is designed for young skin it's more gentle than other scrubs and the lack of any perfume means it is unlikely to cause any irritation. You need to use only a pea sized amount of scrub to cleanse your face as it spreads well but you do need to rinse for quite a long time with lots of fresh water to remove all traces of the micro beads. My skin feels clean after use but I have not noticed any difference in the quality of my skin.
I have only used it as a masque twice as it dried my skin quite badly in places, it also left a harsh residue on my skin and was very hard to rinse off thoroughly. I wouldn't recommend you using it as a whole face masque but instead would say to use it on your problem areas, do a test patch first though as it made my dry skin problem worse right from the first application.
The amount of rinsing you have to do means you need to allow time to use this product regardless of whether you're using it as a scrub or a masque. I timed at least five minutes rinsing time is needed, more than double that of a Clarins scrub I regularly use.
3 Dooyoo Stars.
I am always looking for ways to improve my skin care regime. I want my skin to glow and I haven't yet found a way to achieve it. One of the ways I search for new products I should try is by quizzing friends. I have a make up artist friend who has relocated to Canada, and when speaking on the internet she really really recommends Dermalogica products. She convinced me with her persistance, so I ended up buying a starter pack which came in a clear wash bag with a range of products. One of the products was this, Dermalogica Clean Start (ready steady scrub).
Price and availability:
Dermalogica products are not hugely widely available. I have found them in certain department stores (but not all). The main, and one of the cheapest places, I have seen to buy this is Amazon. Last time I re-purchased it a 75ml tube cost me around twelve pounds. Delivery was quick and I was confident I had bought a genuine product.
The scrub comes in a white tube with blue writing on. I have to say I find all of the other Dermalogica products to appear very classy, but I think this product looks more like a Freederm or Clearasil one. The tube is shaped like a toothpaste tube, a squeezy tube with a round lid with a flat base. It sits up right on this base. The tube has a flick on and off lid, which unveils a small hole which you can squeeze the product out from. A quick warning though, if you do not use the product for some time, make sure you put the lid back on properly otherwise the product will dry out and the hole will get blocked.
The product is a creamy colour with very tiny microfibre beads in it, which are not easy to see to the eye. It has a very mild scent.
To apply the product I wet my hands, squeeze out a small dollop (don't be too heavy handed, this product goes a long way, and at the higher price, it is good to make it last!) I rub the dollop into a bit of water and then onto my problem areas. I don't use this all over my face. For example I go easy on my forehead as that is more sensitive and does not need a scrub. I mainly focus on my chin and nose. I rub it in with my fingers and then wash off several times with a warm wet flannel.
Beware-do not get this product in your eyes as it will REALLY sting and is not nice!
After use my skin feels soft and smooth, but not too dried out or damaged. It then takes some time for the grease to rebuild up throughout the day, not like with some other products I use where the effect almost dries off instantly.
The product is easy to wash off the flannel and does not leave it crusty.
In some parts of my face I have sensitive dry skin which is prone to eczema. This scrub does not make that any worse.
I do not need to use this daily to get the most effect. I found using this three times a week, and the other days using a more mild cleanser works really well.
This is a great product for a deep clean. It is not necessary for daily use, in fact I think it would strip your skin of its natural oils if you did this.
Although the price is high, the product is good,so if you want to spend this much I would definitely recommend it. I find this product can last me about six weeks to two months.
This line of products by Dermalogica is clearly aimed at a younger consumer range than their full line of products. Normally their packaging is understated and somewhat sedate. This on the other hand has a more youthful, bright, fresh look to it. This is called their Clean Start range and I have already reviewed a product from this range that would work very well in conduction with this product. This is the Clean Start Ready Set Scrub. As the name implies this is an exfoliating facial scrub. Nothing new there, there are hundreds of face scrubs on the Market. Yes, but none of them are like this. As always this is packed with pure goodness. Natural ingredients no artificial anything. That's always the way with Dermalogica but normally you'd have to pay a nice price for that pleasure. This range however is far more affordable, again implying this is for teenagers.
This like other Dermalogica exfoliants that I've reviewed promises to remove dead dull skin and expose the healthier younger skin beneath. It also will reduce and control excess oil production by clearing clogged pores and killing the bad bacteria no your skin. This in turn will reduce redness and help existing blemishes to heal faster. As with all exfoliants be they harsh or gentle this will promote circulation and also aide in the natural lymphatic drainage of your skin.
This scrub contains kaolin clay as it's most active ingredient. This is what not only exfoliates but it also removes the unwanted oils from your skin but never drys your skin out. Other ingredients include silica this is a very gentle exfoliant it works as a mild peal, this is a far safer and non abrasive way of exfoliating. Menthol has become more popular in cosmetic products such as shampoo recently, and can be found her too, Menthol has a mild stimulating action that adds to the refreshing feeling you get when using this scrub. Tee Tree oil is in most Dermalogica products and for good reason it's antibacterial properties are all natural gentle and most importantly effective.
This is to be used like any exfoliating face wash. Wet your face with warm water, this opens your pores. Then squeeze out some of the sweet, fruity smelling scrub on to your fingertips, and apply to your skin (as with ALL exfoliants stay away from the sensitive eye area). Then just gently rub your skin to guarantee good cleansing.
If you rub for a minute or two and leave for a minute or two then wash off using fresh clean warm water the results will be better than simply rushing the procedure. This scrub is much easier to remove as it has no solid granules in it, it washes away just like a cleanser.
The results with this budget Dermalogica product are just as good as the full price products. My skin looked brighter and was noticeably softer. This may be aimed at teenagers but many adults suffer for troublesome skin, and this is a very high quality, affective product at a far more affordable price.

The Dermalogica Clean Start Ready Set Scrub is a great product which is a 2 in 1 scrub/mask.
It is intended to leave skin feeling smoother, clearer and fresher, which it certainly does. You simply smooth over your skin and leave to set for 5-7 minutes (the mask part), then using your fingertips massage it over your skin before rinsing off (the scrub).
The scrub is great as the mask makes your face feel nourished and smooth, there is also menthol in the product which cools your skin and eases redness.
There are small beads in the scrub which help to exfoliate your skin, they feel great and it feels like your skin is getting a deep cleanse.
I tend to have combination skin and so the scrub is great for my skin, the mask hydrates my skin while the scrub cleanses my pores. I think that it would work on a range of different skin types as it is gentle enough for sensitive skin but the grainy texture exfoliates well.
The scrub is quite expensive but I think that you can get it for less than £10 online and as it is not intended for everyday use it lasts a reasonable length of time.
There is quite a strong fruity smell from the scrub, which can be quite overpowering but I've gotten used to it now and am actually starting to quite like it.
There is a strong lemon smell to this product and while it is not quite so chemical as the smell of washing up liquid it is still quite strong and for me one of the only negatives with this product. The Clean Start range itself was the range created by Dermalogica for younger users whose skin is oily and needs products that reduce the greasiness of the skin that causes spots. I have found it an effective range for when my own skin gets oily which sometimes happens when I have been using a lot of make up especially when under hot lights.
This exfoliater scrub is very good on oily skin as the lemongras oil and Kaolin Clay work to extract any dirt and impurities in the skin and to also counter balance the oiliness of the skin. The wash also contains silica to act as an exfoliating agent designed to remove any dead skin and to stimulate the circulation of the skin on the face.
There is a very refreshing feel to this product as I massage it into my face, it leaves my skin with a nice clean tingly feel to it, probably due to the fact that there is both tea tree oil and menthol in the scrub. I would certainly say that it is not the most abrasive scrub that I have ever used but it is certainly still very effective. I also find that it has quite a calming effect on my skin and certainly reduces the effect of any minor blemishes however I'm pretty luck in that regard anyway.
This is not the cheapest scrub on the market, I paid £11.99 for a 75ml tube however as it is not a product I have to use on a regular basis I do not mind the expense as it is the best scrub I have found for when my skin gets oily.
Overall this is an effective scrub that does a good job and I would certainly recommend it for those with oily skin.
I have used a number of Dermalogica products in the past with often good results. The Dermalogica Clean Start 'Ready, Set, Scrub' is a facial scrub that exfoliates your skin, removing impurities and leaving your skin feel much healthier in the process. As I had had success with Dermalogica products in the past I gave it a go, priced at £7.50 for a 75ml tube from Amazon it is quite reasonable.
The tube is mainly a white colour with the typical Dermalogica branding on it in a bright blue. To the back of the tube are the ingredients and instructions for use. When I use the scrub I always like to wash my face first with just soap and water. I always apply the scrub to damn skin. I put a bit on my hands, a blob around an inch across, and rub it in both hands. I then use a circular motion to massage and draw out the impurities on my skin. I then rinse the scrub off and find my skin much softer to the touch. The abrasiveness of the scrub on my face feels great and I do find that this product works as my skin doesn't feel oily for quite some time after use. My skin also feels and looks a lot healthier with a glowing shine as it removes dead skin cells.
The scrub contains many 'skin friendly' ingredients, so if you still have teen skin like myself then this product is beneficial to you. Tea Tree is one of the ingredients which kills bacteria and prevents it from forming. I don't use the scrub daily, but using it a couple of times a week after a bath I have found it to improve my skin a lot. The reason I use it after a bath is that your pores open up during a bath and so the product should be a lot more effective during this time.
Overall I am more than happy to recommend the Dermalogica Clean Start 'Ready, Set, Scrub' to anyone with skin prone to acne breakouts, or for anyone just looking for a treat for their skin.
I was given free samples of the Clean Start range made by dermalogica form my friend who is a beauty therapist. This range has been designed for young teenage skin and Is also priced to appeal to the younger generation too. I have tried several products from the Clean Start range but I will be reviewing the Ready Set Scrub.
I received a trial size tube and have since bought the full sized product. Its a 75 ml tube and is mainly white in colour with funky blue writing on it. On the back of the tube is a list of ingredients and other information. I much prefer this packaging to other dermalogica ranges as its more appealing and not clinical looking unlike the other ranges.
The Ready Set Scrub can be bought from dermalogica's website or any beauty department store that stocks dermalogica. I paid around £12.00 at the time but recommend you look around or ask for a discount at a beauty counter as it often works for me.
Ready Set Scrub is ex foliation scrub, it contains natural ingredients and is not tested on animals. As I have said its designed for teenage skin but I am 26 but have signs of teenage skin oily skin and spots so I would recommend it to anyone with this skin type. It has skin friendly ingredients to benefit your skin.
Before I use the scrub I like to wash my face with a cleansing soap and warm water and then pat dry my face. I like to use the scrub when I am in the bath relaxing. I opened the tube and apply a 50p sized blob to my hand, I rub my two hands together and then rub and massage it into my face in circular motions to aid drawing out impurities and the circular motion helps circulation too. I like to leave it for a few minutes to allow the product to sink into my skin, I always avoid this product near my eyes as it does sting like mad if it comes into contact with eyes. I wash it off with warm water and then dry my face.
It feels very gentle on my skin and the ex foliation grain is so small it does not feel like sand paper unlike other face scrubs I have used. It removes dead skin cells and polishes skin, my skin feels soft and smooth after I use this product. It really improves my skin texture and my skin looks fresh and bright. I only use the scrub twice a week and the tube has lasted me 6 months so far with lots left to use. It also prevents my skin from breaking out in spots as it contains tea tree which kills and prevents bacteria from forming. My pores look much less visible as well as it has ingredients that gently tighting skin.
I am very impressed with this product and am happy to pay the price tag and will be buying more when I run out. I have fairly sensitive skin and found this to be a really gentle product but I did expect it to be good quality being made by dermalogica as they are the skin care experts in my opinion. I was not put off with it being designed for teenagers, I think it should have been marketed for young women. My skin feels and looks good and I am really happy I tried the scrub.
This scrub is non-abrasive, so i doesn't irritate you if you have sensitive skin. The exfoliant in this scrub is in the chemical form (it's silica). This product is designed for teenagers, but I think my skin has reverted back to a teenage state as I get worse breakouts now than I did when I was 15. Anyway I bought this to see if it would help, it certainly does wake you up when you use it. It has a very citrusy smell and also contains menthol, which is certainly refreshing.
The beauty of this product is that it can be used as a mask as well as a scrub, just in case you are having a bad breakout.
After using it my skin seemed to be glowing and my pores really did seem to be reduced and it didn't dry out my crazy skin, which is always a good thing. All in all it seemed to reduce the greasy-ness of my skin and helped with my breakouts. So I would recommend trying it if you suffer from combination, oily skin.
The only downside of this product is the price, it costs around £12 online, which is a lot for a face scrub.
Clean Start is a line created by Dermalogica especially for use on teenage skin. As the characteristics of teenage skin include excess oiliness and the formation of blemishes, the products are also useful for adults who have an oily skin type. As they target the teenage market, the prices are a fraction of that of a normal product by Dermalogica. The Clean Start products come packed full of natural ingredients, never test on animals and do all that they can to protect the environment. One of the latest products that I have purchased from the brand is Ready Set Scrub.
What is the purpose of the product?
The purpose of the product is to exfoliate the skin and to refine the pores. In doing so, it promises to remove dead and dull skin cells that clog pores, cause blemishes and dull the complexion as well as reduce the appearance of pores and in turn, regulating the production of excess oils by the skin.
How does it work?
The product contains Kaolin Clay which draw impurities and excess oils from the skin and holds onto them until they are washed away. The ingredient performs a gentle exfoliating action, increases the blood circulaton and unclogs pores, allowing the skin to breath. As it is an anti inflammatory, it will calm angry spots and a puffy morning face, leaving the complexion looking healthy and radiant.
Menthol is included to awaken the skin and leave you feeling refreshed. It is cooling on the skin and helps to remove redness, while increasing the circulation of the blood and nourishing the skin with vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. Glycerin is included to draw moisture into the skin and allow the skin to retain this.
Silica is the substance which performs the exfoliating action. As the ingredients works in a chemical way, it is less harsh on the skin that a physical exfoliation. It gently removes the dead and dull skin cells which are resting on the surface of the face, unclogging pores and preventing the formation of spots.
Tea Tree Oil is included which is an ingredient which is commonly found in acne treatments due to its ability to reduce inflammation and kill spot causing bacteria. Safflower Oil is included which is rich in Vitamin E meaning that skin will remain healthy and youthful and gives the skin a deep moisturisation. Lemongrass Oil is included to tighten, brighten and tone the skin.
How do you use the product?
As this product is essentially an exfoliator then it is not suitable for daily use. I find that twice a week is more than enough and any more than that would irritate my skin. After cleansing my skin, I squeeze out a generous amount of the product and smooth it over my whole face avoiding the eye and lip area.
The product needs to be left to get to work for around five minutes and then, with wet hands, I massage the product into my skin. Once I've done that, I wash it off with a warm, damp flannel and then rinse off any residue with splashes of warm water. Because this product is quite refreshing and invigorating, I find this one is nicer to use in the morning.
Packaging and Price
The packaging is fairly plain and simple, as are all of Dermalogica's products, but this teenage range does have a little more colour. It comes within a white tub with a flip top lid on which is can stand and it has some blue writing on the front. The product can be bought for around £11 and for that money you get 75ml of the product. It can be bought from your local Dermalogica store or from its online website.
The best thing about this scrub is that there aren't any actual hard bits in it. The exfoliant is in a chemical form so there aren't any big particles to irritate your skin or make blemishes sore. The only texture in the product is some tiny gritty beads that don't hurt the skin at all, no matter how much pressure you apply when massaging. This makes the product much more gentle on sensitive skin but it still manages to remove the dead skin from my face.
The aroma of the product is of citrus fruits like oranges and lemons which I assume comes partly from the Lemongrass Oil. It is very refreshing and makes this a nice product to use in the mornings to get you wide awake immediately. It also feels very cool and tingly on the skin which is also very invigorating in the mornings when you can't wake up and I assume this feeling is down to the Menthol in the mixture.
It does a great job of removing excess oils and impurities from my skin and really leaves it feeling squeaky clean. My skin also feels a lot smoother with all signs of dry and flaky skin gone. With continued my enlarged pores seem to be reduced in size and I have also noticed a slight reduction in the amount of excess oils produced by my skin which means that my skin remains matte for longer. It has also cleared up my skin gradually and has never caused any new blemishes to form or any irritations. After use, my skin still feels moisturised and not tight or uncomfortable. It also looks healthy and radiant.
All in all, this is a fantastic scrub which doubles up as a mask and works really well on spot prone and oily skin. It gets rid of any dead skin, reduces the size of the pores and leaves my face feeling really soft and smooth. I wouldn't recommend this product for those with dry skin or those who hate the smell of lemons but for everyone else, it is well worth a try whatever your age!
A.M. 3-5 times a week
"A Break-out fighting, pore refining duo"
This product claims to "deliver smoother, clearer, fresher skin. Contains purifying clay to pull excess oil from skin, cooling menthol for redness and silica to scrub away clogging dead skin cells.
~~~APPEARANCE, SMELL, TEXTURE AND USING THE PRODUCT~~~
It says to use in the morning but I've been using it in the evening, don't really have time to do this mask in the morning! However, I am available to do it in the morning on the weekends so may try mixing the times I do it.
The bottle has a narrow nozzle which this scrub (I'll call it a scrub but it's also a mask) comes out of. I use about 2-3 pea sized squeezes to cover face. It says a thin layer, but with any other mask I have used I would need a lot more. I feel greedy squeezing so much out the tube each time, so I've been very stingy with it.
The scrub is like a paste with micro beads in it which you layer onto your skin thinly after washing and immediately there is a fresh minty feel on your skin (from the menthol) and starts to dry quickly. It takes roughly five minutes though depending on how thick you spread the scrub, it could take up to 10 minutes to dry.
Once dry, prepare a basin of lukewarm water and start massaging the skin with wet finger tips. This unleashes the scrubbing action and the micro beads feel really good against the skin and definitely a refreshing and enjoyable feeling. Wet fingertips aren't usually enough for the whole face, so I dip my fingers back into the water every now and then. Once I've scrubbed roughly the whole face I splash water onto it and start getting rid of the mask with gentle round motions.
Once the mask and scrub is all gone, your skin feels really smooth and it feels like a good deep clean, though obvious improvements cannot be seen immediately on first use. If used regularly, there is definitely a clear improvement in terms of removing dirt and oil. I have yet to see pores being refined. I wouldn't say this is a great product for deep cleaning, but if you generally have good skin but skin gets dirty during the day then this is a good product.
Another product I have used similar to this is the Origins' Modern Friction (a scrub) which uses crushed rice as the micro beads. It is a thick paste which dries and needs water to reactivate much like this scrub. With this Origins' scrub I only use one pea size, though it feels slightly harsher on the skin and I would use it about once a week. Origins Modern Friction is priced at around £30 for the large size- I have also written a review on it on Dooyoo if you're interested.
Dermatologica Ready Set Scrub can be purchased for around £25. My mum bought this for me in Hong Kong for $268 which is roughly £25.
Quick and easy to use, Dermatologica Ready Set Scrub is enjoyable, relaxing and refreshing to use, leaving your skin really soft and smooth after use as well as cleaning it well. I have yet to see pore refining action but it definitely removes the oil from my face and leaves me feeling like it is clean and happy. A very solid product, though a tad expensive for what several unbranded products could do equally well.
Combines scrub and mask / Type: Scrub
