I have skin that is quite troublesome. It can be very dry, but it is also prone to breakouts, particularly after wearing make up or sun cream. I've had a few occasions recently where I have wanted to wear full make up. My skin was showing the tell tale signs of a full on rebellion, so I bought myself a medibac skin clearing set from dermologica.
The set as a whole was £40, and contained six smaller products. I was happiest doing it this week as the dermologica range is very pricey, and I feel that I can try it without wasting too much product or money if I don't like it. Then if anything proves indispensible, I can always get a full size version.
This is a bit of a strange product. It is designed to be applied to oily skin like the t-zone region of the face. It is meant to be applied to skin after cleansing and before applying any moisturiser or make up. It is a thick gel that is a bit of a hard colour to describe. It is not completely transparent, but reminds me a bit of putty in it is slightly grey looking. It has almost no detectable scent when using the product, and this is something I do like about it as you don't want a medicated smelling product on your face particularly if you then want to go on and apply other products.
This product is designed to help clear breakouts. It contains salicylic acid which is known in skin care products to unblock pores by dissolving the skin cells that are blocking them. It is also said to contain silicones to help diminish fine lines and leave the skin soft and smooth.
My skin does not normally look oily so I have been using the other products in the range more than this one, but one particular spot has appeared on the bridge of my nose from wearing sun cream and sweating. It is right where my sunglasses and reading glasses sit, so you can imagine its sore and very unsightly. This area has looked rather oily while this spot has been there. I felt it was the perfect time to try this product.
Squeezing this out of the tube, I was able to get out just the tiniest amount at a time. I didn't want to be too liberal at first as I was unsure how this would apply to the skin and I didn't want to waste it as I only have a 15ml tube of it.
A bit that is approximately the same area as a pen lid is enough to cover about half of my nose. This product rubs into the skin beautifully. One stroke across the area and it has all rubbed in. This is like a magic eraser. The shine instantly disappears where you have applied it, and the area looks less sore and the pores look less prominent. This reduction in redness and oiliness instantly made me feel less self concious about it and although the spot itself had not shrunk in size, it did seem a bit smaller looking in the mirror seeing my skin at a short distance.
My skin looks really smooth and matt, and I do think this would be a good base for applying make up over. I sometimes don't get such a good result using moisturiser. I found it hard to believe that a product that diminished oil did not sting or leave my skin looking dry. This did not feel at all harsh. In fact, it almost felt like there was nothing on my skin at all.
Applying too much product, I did notice some small flecks that looked like dry skin, but I assume this was just the excess product that was rubbing off my skin leaving it completely smooth.
The only negative I have found is that I haven't found the results that long lasting. After a couple of hours in warm weather then the shiny patches have reappeared again and I have had to apply more product. As I said before, I don't normally suffer from oily skin at all - this for me is a minor temporary problem. So I can only imagine if you wanted to wear this all the time to clear oiliness then it is not really going to be a long term solution. The point really is to help clear up a break out though, not to have a significant effect on oiliness, so I can't fault the product too much if it struggles with this. It doesn't promise to solve it.
I think this is a very useful tool alongside the other products in the medibac range for making my skin when it is suffering from a breakout.
If I wanted to buy a full size version of this with 40ml in that would cost me £34. While it has had some effect, I am not convinced that I would use the product enough with my particular skin type before it reached its expiry date. My tube has an expiry date of July 2014, so its over a year from purchase, but a small amount of this has gone far for me. I think if I wanted it again, it would probably be more cost effective for me to buy another sample pack like I did.
This is an interesting product that does work quickly to improve skin appearance and work at healing a breakout too. I can't really fault it apart from effects not being that long lasted for me.
I am in my thirties and have fair, oily skin which is prone to breakouts.
About five years ago when I worked abroad and had vastly more disposal income than I have now I used only Dermalogica products for facial care. When I settled down in the UK and had to start worrying about bills and rent and stuff I realised that I was going to have to make some changes if I didn't want to end up broke (albeit with lovely clear skin!) To this end I went about replacing all my pricey Dermalogica products with equally effective cheaper brands, and I have been hugely successful. With moisturiser, cleanser, toner and 'on the spot' treatments all downsized, I was left with just two things which I've found to be irreplaceable - and this magical mattifier is one of them.
After I have cleansed my face I put the mattifier on my chin and the sides of my nose (on my face these are the spotty oily bits). Then I use my regular moisturiser everwhere else. The mattifier goes on incredibly smoothly and makes my skin feel really silky. It's an excellent base for make-up and just has the most amazing smoothing, balancing effect.
I find that products containing salicylic acid work wonders on my skin and my cleanser and toner both have this 'magic ingredient' in. This gel is brilliant because the salicylic acid is in contact with your skin for a long time so it's got plenty of time to soak in and do its work. My skin is very temperamental and it's difficult to say if any one product has made a big difference but I do feel that this mattifier helps prevent breakouts and control oiliness, and I would even go so far as to say that if I was stranded on a desert island and could only take five toiletry items with me this would be on the list!
I'm a bit of a bargain hunter these days and don't like spending lots of money on things like toiletries and beauty products - but as far as I'm concerned this isn't a luxury - it's an everday essential, and one I'm going to keep buying, even if it means surviving on toast and supernoodles for the last few days of the month!
This cream will defy gravity, turn back the hands of time and not only that it will also cook you diner. Sounds far fetched? Your better believe it does but that's just how ludicrous some of the claims are that all the creams and potion pushers tell us by print, TV and even pop ups on certain web sites. I'm seven thousand years old ( says some teenager ) but my skin looks amazing that's thanks to Makeie up cosmetics.
Unlike the others Dermalogica doesn't use heavy handed advertising techniques they rely on word of mouth to spread the news that their products actually work ( some better than others )
This is their Clearing Mattifier, I had no idea what that word meant when I was given this product to try out. Basically it's designed to help take that oily look off your skin, as I mentioned in a previous review for a Dermalogica product with a similar use, I don't suffer from overly oily skin. I do however have some parts of my skin that are oilier than others and the fact that I could stop that from happening without drying up the area too much really interested me. As we all know if the skin produces too much oil spots aren't far behind, the oil clogs the pours and hair follicles resulting in our ugly friends making an unwanted appearance and more times than not they bring their extended family along just for the ride. The culprit in all of this is the dreaded word "Sebum" this isn't another word for sea sickness this is the substance that congeals in the pores and blocks them up like a volcano.
In order to prevent such an incident this gel has some of mother natures best kept secrets up its sleeve, such as Licorice to calm angry looking spots and reduce their redness and volume. Caffeine to stimulate blood circulation of the skin and other well know ingredients know for their all natural benefits to healthy, clear skin. These are to name just a few, Green Tea, Zink, Horse Chestnut and Chamomile the final one being very well know for it's use in reducing inflammation and pain after a sunburn. This product does not only treat existing skin problems but also works in the battle of preventing the problems in the first place. The natural antibacterial ingredients such as Cinnamon Bark Extract ensure your skin stays germ green, meaning that it's less likely that you will suffer frequent breakouts and if you do these very same ingredients will help kill off any nasty germs that love to make their home right on your face, Yuck!
Simply apply to freshly cleansed skin using clean fingertips, rub in gently ( as always avoid contact with the very sensitive eye area ) I found the gel got sucked up by my skin extremely quickly, it was totally gone from the rest of my face by the time I reached
Now not only does this gel work on those fore mentioned problems but it also has "Organic Silicones" these work at plumping out any fine lines on the face making them look far less visible. So it's quite a good product at keeping my skin clear, after using it my face ( the area around my nose ) was far less oily in just a few days and although I don't have wrinkles yet it did make my skin look different to the other Dermalogica oil reducing products that I have used and reviewed in the past maybe that's down to those magic organic silicones.
So this cream may not defy gravity, turn back the hands of time, or indeed cook you dinner. But it does make your skin look great and I would rather have that any day of the week.
Thanks for reading :0) 2night

I use this for myself and one of my younger ladies, it is a medicated formula to help calm irritated skin and also mattifies shiny skin. My lady is twenty and she suffers with spots to a small degree, she introduced me to this product after requesting it following a facial. I have shiny skin at times, a lingering after effect of sunbed use although I haven't used a sunbed for six years.
This product works effectively on both our skins, especially hers as within a day of application her skin looks clearer and smoother with a definite reduction in redness around her problem areas. The shine on my skin mattifies quickly, within a few minutes of applying the product. The shine I have is slight and can be corrected with a good foundation, using the Mattifier means I can be more confident going out with a lighter base such as a simple tinted moisturiser.
It is also effective as a primer underneath foundation thanks to the skin smoothing effects, I have found its best to leave the Mattifier to settle for five minutes before applying foundation as this gives longevity to your make up. When using this product I have more choice of foundation as I don't specifically need to narrow it down to mattifying formulas, my shine is intermittent so I have a wide selection of foundations but it always happens that I have a shiny day when I want to use a certain foundation. It's good that this is not a problem anymore and I am finding that with regular use the shiny days are becoming less frequent.
My lady has been using it daily for six months and for a while her skin looked better every time I saw her, we noticed this has reached a plateau now so she has arranged to visit a Dermalogica counter for advice. It has a soothing effect on her skin and makes it look visibly clearer and healthier, the light consistency of the Mattifier suits her young skin and has almost instant effects.
A 40ml tube has so far lasted for four months of semi regular use, that is £35 well spent for the confidence it gives me in my less made up skin.
5 Dooyoo Stars.
I have bought this a few times and feel that it is a good product. I had switched to Avon's Magix's Face perfector which does a similar job but this one from Dermalogica deals with Spots as well as shine which Avon's version doesn't so the Dermalogica one is more suited to me.
I have Spotty skin, but sometimes the Spots aren't all that bad really. My skin is pretty shiny though and Oily, and I often have a sheen on my forehead which I hate, so anything that I can use which would get rid of this and help my skin would be a good product for me.
This comes in a 40ml tube and the last time I bought this which was about 3 months ago it cost me £23 (I think). You can sometimes find this range on offer online but sometimes you have to trawl through a few websites, and you may not save all that much. A little blob of this goes a long way though so a tube will do a while. I've been using this off and on for the 3 months, but probably have used this 5 days out of 7 and I still have some of this left. Since this tube is made of plastic then you can cut through the tube and scrape the remaining bits out of it as well, so you should get every last dreg out of this.
This product is designed to help Control shine but also to clear blocked and congested pores, which should help to stop Spots forming as well. This also works on existing spots and seems to take the redness away. Also any large raised Spots i've got seem to shrink, but this could be if it is working on unblocking the pores therefore the spots are getting shrunk. It is a slightly medicated product but doesn't have a harsh pong to it. The scent is just a light scent which is alright smelling.
Just smooth this product over you face - and that's it. This seems to soak into your face quickly and even after 5 minutes I felt that my forehead looked a lot better. You don't notice this product on your face as well as it doesn't seem to look caked on or that.
A great product, just wished it was cheaper.
I actually got given a sample of this, before I bought otherwise I think I may have been a little put off by the price, which is on average around £24 online for 40ml. Dermalogica recommend applying a tiny pea sized amount to areas of your face that have excess oil. The product itself is medicated and designed for people who suffer from acne or breakouts of spots. I fall into the latter category and often have huge breakouts in my T-zone, but I also suffer from very sensitive skin and so have to be careful which products I use.
The best way to use this product is after cleansing but prior to putting moisturiser on. I followed the directions and found that even after applying my moisturiser my skin wasn't shiny and didn't look greasy. The product itself absorbed really easily and didn't make my skin feel dry, it's also very light to use, so you don't feel caked in product. I have to say I don't wear a lot of makeup so am probably not the best person to comment on how this product works with it. When I did wear a bit of foundation it seemed to sit as normal on my skin and didn't slide off. I also didn't have greasy patches appearing though the foundation.
The only thing to note about this product is to watch yourself if you have very sensitive skin because it contains salycylic acid, which can cause a reaction. My skin seemed ok when using this though and I didn't get any burning or stinging when applying. If in doubt however I would see if you can get a tester to try out.
Admittedly this is an expensive product, but I think if you suffer from breakouts or acne you would be willing to try anything, I found that not only did this reduce the greasyness of my skin, but it seemed to reduce the amount of time that I had the spots. The main thing though for me is that it didn't react with my sensitive skin.
I would recommend this product to other acne sufferers and those who have breakouts!
Dermalogica Clearing Mattifier is specifically designed for oily skin that is prone to spots. This is a product that is designed to control that horrible shininess that is caused by your over enthusiastic glands that just don't know when to producing sebum.
It is also designed to exfoliate and clear congested hair follicles and pores, preventing congestion, meaning that those horrible spots will not able to form in the first place. To top that off, it will clear away any spots which may already be lurking on your face by soothing the irritation and inflammation that they cause.
It is a medicated treatment that claims that it will leave you with skin that is clear and smooth, and that will remain shine free for the whole day. And just for good measure, it will get rid of any fine lines that you may have developed too. Now you can't argue with that!
So how does it perform this magic?
The product is packed full of organic and natural ingredients which each serve a different purpose. The soothing Salicylic Acid is responsible for clearing those congested pores and therefore preventing future break outs. Vitamin A is present to naturally exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells which may otherwise have grouped together and helped to form spots.
The product is packed full of soothing ingredients including Chamomile, Green Tea and Licorice which calm angry red spots and inflamed blemishes on the skin. A few choice ingredients including Zinc, Caffeine and Horse Chestnut perform the shine reducing magic. They stop those sebaceous glands from producing more oil than is needed and help to regulate its activity, meaning that your skin will remain shine free without becoming dry.
Organic Silicones are present in the product to fill out fine lines on your face, making them disappear. Cinnamon Bark Extract is present in order to stop spot causing bacteria from lurking on the skin, reducing the developments of spots. It also acts as an astringent, tightening the pores and making the surface of the skin smoother.
Grape Seed Extract, Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E are present in order to nourish and condition. They also help to fight against free radicals which can otherwise cause damage to the skin and encourage premature aging.
How do you use the product? This product is to be applied to clean skin. It should be used every morning after cleansing, and I apply a tiny bit of the product to the areas which get oily and avoid the areas which are prone to dryness. You've got to love combination skin!!
The product comes in a white tube which a grey screw top lid. The product itself is a cloudy coloured gel like lotion that is light in its consistency. It melts easily into your skin and disappears to work its magic. It costs around £25 for 40ml but as you only use a bit then it will last a long time. It is available from many online stores and if you have the time or inclination to shop around, you'll probably find a good deal.
This product is fantastic at reducing shine. My skin must produce sebum like crazy because no matter how much mattifying foundation and mattifying powder I apply, it still makes it way through within a few hours but with this product, the shine has been noticeably reduced.
I actually wear less make up because of this, so I appear more natural, my skin can breathe easier and my pores are less congested. Therefore I've noticed less spots are forming and my complexion is brighter. I don't get bad spots anyway, just little ones that shouldn't be there at my age! Although it has helped with those, I can't comment on how it would help very troubled skin.
My skin doesn't feel tighter when I use it but my pores seem smaller, although it hasn't made a massive different in this area. My fine lines disappear because this product fills them out and so my make up looks nicer too. Although I should state that my fine line are luckily still very fine at the moment.
A great product that really does reduce shine!
