I have always suffered with Bad skin. My skin is Oily and I tend to get a lot of spots. I would have thought I would have grown out of that kind of skin, but I guess that I will always be stuck with it
I got a little sample of this product before I bought the full sized bottle as this brand isn't cheap and I don't want to spend all this money on a product that won't work. I use another product from this range and when I asked the advisor for a sample of this she popped a few in my bag - possibily hoping I would come back, buy the full sized product and she would earn commission. I do like a freebie though.
This comes in a 50ml bottle and I managed to pick this up online for £26. The price can range from £22 (often with a postage charge on top though) up to £30 so it's not cheap for such a small amount. This bottle lasts a good lenght of time though as a little bit of this goes a long way.
The bottle for this looks alright. It is a small bottle, which you would assume it would be for the size of the product. It looks simple enough with the white bottle with grey writing. I wouldn't say that it looks expensive as it looks pretty simple, but it's alright.
The ingredients in here are Rosemary, Lavender and Tea Tree so things that are good for clearing up spotty skin. I thought that the scent of this would not be nice as I thought it would be pretty Herb-y but it is a nice enough scent that isn't all that strong.
This is a thick Gel which although seems to be a little sticky to the touch it isn't all that sticky. Just dab this onto the area you wish to treat and this dries in a few minutes. I would say that if you have a large Spot then this seems to tighten the area and dry it out a bit which you can feel after about half an hour. I don't notice it to be all that dry though. I think the reason this is an overnight treatment as it tends to make the skin seem a bit flaky and a little rough, so just pop this on, go to sleep and let it do it's work.
This really works. Any large Spots that I have seem to be reduced the next day and I feel that this works well on my skin and I will keep using this great product. Just wished it was a bit cheaper.
I decided to take the plunge and book a facial at my local beauty salon. As I was talking with the beautician she suggested that I tried Dermalogica for my skin type (oily and spot prone). I was given two sample sachets of this treatment, which resulted in me buying the full sized version online.
This treatment gel is a transparent gel which is easy to apply and soaks into the skin well without any residue. The gel is pleasant to use and it doesn't have a strong or overpowering smell to it. You use the gel overnight and wash it off in the morning. The gel is easy to wash off and it doesn't react with the skin in any way. I would suggest using this gel if you suffer from sensitive skin as it is really gentle. The gel absorbs excess oil on the surface of the skin and helps combat redness and irritation. It feels really calming on my skin and since using the gel my skin doesn't itch half as much.
As for spots, this gel really works! It works better than Quinoderm and Freederm. It may be more expensive but it works and it's better for your skin as it doesn't contain any harsh chemicals. I would recommend this gel as it has really worked for me. I don't get as many spots now (I would say that they have reduced by 80%) and it doesn't harm my skin.
A great gel treatment. Well worth the money.
You can always trust Dermalogica to keep things simple. The names of their products always tell you a lot about what it will either do, or how you will need to use it. This is their Overnight Clearing Gel complex and as the name suggests it's to be used overnight. I love this idea because I'm always of the view that the longer you can safely leave a product on your skin the better. However NEVER leave something on your skin for any longer than the manufacturer states as with some products this can result in horrible skin reaction and even burns.
This isn't as moisturising as most of Dermalogica's face products. But is is still gentle on the skin and as always full of goodness. It's main use is to help clear up blemishes and redness on the skin but it also makes your skin healthier even if you don't have any of theses problems, using this will help prevent such break outs and keep your skin in optimum condition.
This will also dramatically increases healing times when it comes to unsightly spots. The fact that it's an overnight treatment my sound daunting as your putting your trust in the product that you won't wake up with a horrible allergic reaction or overly dry scaly skin. But because it's Dermalogica you can rest assured that your skin is in the best hands possible. The scent of the product is perfectly blended to help aide a restful nights sleep as it's botanic herbal blends seep deep into your lungs with every breath.
The product drys quickly to help prevent it rubbing off during the night and also as with clay masks this draws out impurities and detoxifies your skin. The heath packed ingredients contain such beneficial properties such as Lavender oil, Rosemary oil, Horse Chestnut, Citronella and Tee Tree Oil. These are only a few of the wonderful ingredients that have benefits such as calming, healing and protecting your skin. These and the others also have great antibacterial, antifungal, and anti inflammatory properties that help acne sufferers particularly. This could explain the packaging for this product as it looks more medical than cosmetic. Dermalogica always have understated packaging but this looks a little bit more Serious than some. Its in a tough plastic bottle with a White body and their recognisable trade trademark grey headline print and lid. This is also one of the few products that stands up the traditional way instead of on it's cap.
The following morning it's very easy to remove the product as you go through your normal beauty routine. The dried on mask washes off easily. This can also be used as a target treatment, meaning instead of covering your entire face in it you can dab it directly on to a blemish you would like to dry out and reduce it's redness and finally help it heal quicker. If you do apply it this way, removing it the following morning will be even easier. I do however not recommend this way of applying it as you are only treating a problem rather than preventing that problem in the first place.
As I said at the beginning this isn't AS moisturising as other Dermalogica products because it's meant for drawing out all impurities from your skin. So I recommend you use one of their amazing high level moisturising products that I have already reviewed. This way your skin is getting the best treatment it can and after all that's what it deserves.

Although I am 25 I still do get outbreaks of blemishes. The worst areas for me are on my nose and chin, aswell as my back and especially the neck area. The Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel is a product designed for adults with the same problems as me. The gel is specially formulated to clear dead skin cells and impurities such as dirt and oil from the surface of the skin. The product carries the claim that it purifies the skin, thus preventing new blemishes and blackheads from forming. The gel is also designed to improve your skin by treating existing blemishes through keeping your skin free of excess oils and bacteria.
The gel isn't cheap, costing around £25-£30 for a 50ml bottle. I don't know enough about the ingredients list to give a personal experience of each one, but the benefits of the tea tree oil contained within this gel are simple. Tea tree oil frequently appears in such products due to its ability to heal and soothe skin irritations. Outbreaks often feature sore and red skin, tea tree oil is therefore a key active ingredient in spot treatment products.
The gel doesn't have a strong artificial or chemical smell like a lot of these products sometimes have. The scent is quite relaxing at night, with just a whiff of rosemary and lavender. The gel isn't too thick, so it can be spread on the skin quite easily, but I wouldn't say it is too runny either! The consistency is just right, I think.
Application of the Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel couldnt be simpler really. By applying a thin layer of the gel onto the key areas of my face and neck. I apply it directly from the bottle and ensure my skin is clean beforehand by using a good facial cleanser beforehand. In the morning I simply wash away the coating on my skin during my shower and just use shower gel and water to do this.
The typical Dermalogica branding is present with this Overnight Clearing Gel, the trademark white bottle and simple Dermalogica wording ensure it stands out. I wouldn't say this product is aimed at the Male or Female market inparticular and would definately suggest it can be used by both sexes.
Results are what matters with such a product, and the Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel has given me some fantastic results on occassion. Generally I find spots can take a while to clear, so I think the results are dependant upon a number of factors. I use this gel in my daily skincare routine, but at this price I wouldn't be able to say with any real confidence that it will absolutely be the solution to all your problems. As part of a good skincare regime I would say it helps with a 24hour protection against outbreaks.
During the early stages of my pregnancy (in August last year, I was 27), due to the hormonal imbalances, I started to suffer with very oily skin and would get acne like breakouts here and there. I'd never experienced anything like it before, and of course, my doctor couldn't prescribe anything for it.
So I went for a consultation with a Dermalogica advisor at my local beauty salon and she recommended that I try an overnight treatment, which you simply apply before bed, and remove in the morning. She suggested the Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel which cost £31 for 50ml (prices vary depending on retailer, it is also available online). This is more expensive than any other over the counter, high street chemist type spot treatment however I do rate Dermalogica as one of the leaders in skincare and on this occasion was happy to pay not for the name, but for the quality of the product I felt I would get.
The Clearing Gel is classed as Overnight because it is quite a thick and gloopy clear gel which goes on to your skin, dries and slightly tightens it, making it shiny. It also tends to flake at the edges meaning it's not suitable for daytime use on it's own or with make up over the top. You can of course use it during the day if you won't be going out!
The gel has some ingredients renowned for their spot fighting qualities - salicylic acid, used in acne treatments, lavender, tea tree oil and rosemary - all naturally occurring antibacterial ingredients, and zinc, also found in many spot treatments.
But it doesn't leave your skin dry. The added green tea soothes the skin so it isn't reddened by the treatment, and hyaluronic acid (also used in one of my other favourite products, Avon Anew Clinical Derma-Full x3 Facial Filling Serum), to plump up the skin. Caffeine revitalises the skin, and nordihydroguaiaretic acid along with yeast extract combat the oily pores from future over production. So, the more you use it, in theory, the better your skin will look.
I don't use this product every night, but I do use it when I have a breakout, tired looking, oily skin, or after a bath when my pores are open and my skin is fully cleansed. It is also good after a night out. I find that it does a great job at evening out my oily T Zone, minimising spots of all sizes, diminishing shine the following day, and making me look (as much as possible with a four month old baby) fresh and hydrated.
I know that some people might not want to justify the cost but trust me this works. And as you only really need to add a bit, it will last you ages - I've had mine ten months now and still have another month's use left in it. And will I be buying it again? Yes, I think so - it might last even longer if my husband stops pinching it :)
Overall - an excellent skincare product that doesn't skimp on the ingredients, isn't all hype, and is one of the rare ones worth every penny paid. Five out of five.
Despite being 27, my skin still shows traits of a typical teenager's complexion being oily, with enlarged pores and the frequently dotted with the appearance of blemishes. The Dermalogica MediBac Overnight Clearing Gel is a product that has been specifically designed for adults who have skin like mine that just refuses to grow up.
What does it do?
The product is designed to clear the skin of dead skin cells and spot causing impurities. It promises to purify the skin so that new blemishes and blackhead can't form, while speeding up the healing process of blemishes that you may already have. The treatment is designed to get to work while you sleep, soothing the skin and inhibiting spot causing factors such as excess oils and bacteria.
How does it work?
The product contains Salicylic Acid which is an ingredient commonly found in acne treatments. The substance is gentle, despite what its name suggests and it is extracted from the Willow tree. It acts as a chemical exfoliant and removes the dead skin cells from the surface of face, preventing them from clogging the pores and forming blemishes. In doing so, it prevents the pores from becoming enlarged further and allows the skin to breathe.
Rosemary is present because of its antibacterial qualities which prevent spot causing bacteria from lurking on the skin. It has a rejuvenating effect on the skin and as it contains antioxidants, it prevents the skin from aging prematurely aging. Spiraea extract helps to encourage the skins own defence system to work at its optimum level and acts as an anti inflammatory on the skin.
Also included is Zinc which has a toning effect on the skin, making the pores smaller so that less oil will creep out. It helps to heal blemishes that you may already have and regulates the sebum glands activity. A Zinc deficiency is often the cause of acne and the substance can work wonders at clearing the skin. Citronella has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities and so prevents blemishes from occurring.
Lavender helps to heal spots that are already present while stimulating the growth of healthy new skin cells. It is incredibly soothing on the skin, calms redness and balances the skin's production of oil.
Horse Chestnut is present to increase the bloods circulation meaning plenty of oxygen reaches your skin cells. It strengthens the skin and plumps up the skin cells, meaning your face will look more toned and more youthful.
Tea Tree Oil is another substance which is frequently found in acne treatments and it is included here to heal blemishes and to soothe any irritations. Sage is included to tighten the pores and to kill any bacterial that is lurking on the skin. Orange is also present for this purpose and the fruit extract also helps to brighten the skin.
Panthenol is also swirled into the mixture which is a form of Vitamin B5. It moisturises and plumps up the skin while dealing with any inflammation or irritation. It leaves the skin feeling smoother and looking refreshed and rejuvenated.
How do you use the product?
I apply a small layer of this product to my face just before I climb into bed. It needs to be used on clean and dry skin. In the morning the product can be washed away with your usual cleanser. I also use this product when I'm having a quiet day in, after a night out with the girls. Usually, I will have forgotten to remove my make up properly the night before and I use this product to help with damage limitation!
I only use the product on the areas of my face where spots form and avoid any areas where my skin gets dry. In my case, that means smoothing it everywhere other than my forehead. I also sometimes just use it as targeted relief on the more obvious blemishes to make the bottle last longer!
Packaging and Price
The product comes in a plain white bottle that is typical of Dermalogica's packaging. The brand doesn't believe in fancy packaging or advertising as they believe that their creations can speak for themselves. The bottle has Dermalogica written down the side and it has a grey screw top lid. The top of the bottle is formed into a point in order to make the solution easy to dispense.
The product isn't cheap and will cost you around £29 for 50ml of the liquid. It can be bought from your nearest Dermalogica store and also from many online websites. The price will vary slightly so it's worth taking the time to shop around.
Despite this product being a pricey one, you are paying for the quality and not the label. It is embarrassing for a teenager to have bad skin but it moves onto a whole new level when this continues into adulthood. In addition, the amount you use of this product each time is so small, that the bottle should last you a very long time.
The product contains a whole host of natural ingredients and the solution has no unnecessary harsh ingredients. Nor has it any artificial fragrances or colouring so this product will be fine on sensitive skin. It has never given me any feelings of discomfort or irritation which is good considering the amount of time that it is left on your skin.
The reason that this product is an overnight treatment is that you would look a bit silly wearing it in the daytime. As the product dries and you toss and turn in bed, the solution gets flaky and some of it peels off. It would look awful in the day time or underneath make up, especially as it can get sticky at times. But like I said earlier, if you're not planning on going anywhere, you can wear it at home in the day time.
The product can be a bit drying on the skin and after a while it made the dry areas of my skin, even dryer so now I only use it on the oily areas. Due to the price, it's not something I use religiously but it's great for putting on blemishes. I use it overnight when I need to ensure that my skin looks good the next day and this product is very reassuring as I know I won't wake up to find any nasty suprises on my face.
When used on targeted areas, the spots that I have, heal a lot faster and the product helps to calm the inflammation and the redness. My friend has also used this product and although she didn't notice any massive improvements, one thing we both agreed on was that it certainly doesn't do any harm. My skin is always in a better condition after using this and it is a lot clearer too.
The aroma is relaxing with a fresh herbal fragrance which is quite comforting as you're dropping off to sleep. The product is easily removed the next day using a normal cleanser. My skin feels much cleaner, less oily and remains shine free for longer the next day.
All in all, this is a great preventative and healing treatment for adult skin which is still suffering from teenage symptoms. The natural ingredients really help to dry up any existing blemishes while preventing the appearance of new ones. My skin seems clearer and brighter after use and although it has a hefty price tag, if your skin is affecting your happiness, then in my opinion this little product is worth a shot.
