I use dermologica a lot and have done for years as the range meets most of my skin requirements without causing breakouts. I also trust the brand's reputation. I have oily/combination skin and read an article that suggested using oil based cleansers to combat grease. Although this sounded contradictary I decided to give it a go, and happily, by some magic quirk of fate, dermologica brought out this product at the very same time, obviously riding the zeitgeist.
I was intrigued by the double cleansing philosophy that accompanied the precleanse which suited me more as I felt more comfortable with washing the oil off rather than leaving it. I got some samples which I loved so much I decided to buy the bottle.
This stuff is great at removing the general grime of the day. You can feel the oil really getting into the pores, breaking down the dirt and at the same time your skin's getting a lovely massage. The product can be used to take eye make-up off and removes even stubborn mascara without making your eyes sting, and mine are a little on the sensitive side. It is also brilliant at removing suncream which often clogs up my pores. The smell is quite subtle and inoffensive, which is good as I don't like over fragranced products. The oil is very easy to rinse off as it dissolves with water without leaving any residue. I then put ordinary cleanser on (dermologica clay cleanser) and remove with a muslim cloth. Am sure that the preclease doubles the effectiveness of the ordinary cleanser and leaves my skin feeling refreshed and completely deep-cleaned without any dryness or tightness.
At first I was a little dubious about using two products to clean my skin, suspecting a money making exercise in making the customer shell out twice, but after using the regieme for a year I highly recommend the product. I am not really spotty, but my skin is prone to break-outs and precleanse has really reduced the frequency, so I have pimple free skin most of the time, including during summer.
Dermalogica pre cleanse is exactly what it says it is. It is a product that is designed to be used before your normal cleanser. Originally I was sceptical about buying this as I thought it was just another way of making money out of me but I absolutely love it and will continue to buy this even when I move on from using Dermalogica (I like to change up the products I use as I don't want my skin to become used to them and for them to no longer be as effective)
The pre cleanse is an oil based cleanser and originally I was scared to even try it as I thought it would leave my skin feeling greasy and make me breakout. However after getting over my fear of putting oil on my oily skin I have to say it is one of the best cleansers for cleaning out my skin that I have ever tried.
As usual for Dermalogica products it contains loads of plant extracts and natural ingredients such as olive, kukui nut and arpricot oil.
The oil in the pre cleanse binds itself to any oil in or on your skin (such as dirt and make-up) and dissolves it.
To use the pre cleanse you just need to massage a few drops into your skin. You have to add the pre cleanse to dry skin and then when you have massages it around making sure to pay extra attention to the areas with stubborn make-up or congestion you then wet your hands and continue to massage. When your wet hands interact with the pre cleanse it becomes more like a cream instead of oil and then you just need to rise your face with warm water.
The pre cleanse feels really oily on the skin when you first apply it but the great thing about it is that it doesn't stay on the skin when you rinse and my skin is left feeling really soft but not oily and greasy. It is amazing at removing make-up and even waterproof mascara comes off with no problems and first time so I don't need to bother with doing it again.
I usually follow this up with the ultra calming cleanser but to be honest this is such an effective cleanser in its own right that you could easily just use it on its own without having to bother with using another cleanser afterwards.
My skin is left feeling ultra clean after using this and I can honestly say that my skin is looking less congested than it was and over all it just looks healthier and feels cleaner.
The pre cleanse costs around about £30 and comes in a 150ml bottle. It is expensive but I personally think it is worth every penny and because I only need to use a few drops at a time the bottle has lasted me for months so it doesn't work out that bad when you break it down.
Dermalogica preCleanse oil. Wait a minute did I just say oil?
Yes i did, and I also said the very trustworthy name of Dermalogica.
So with that trust you can rest assured that any oils in this product will be only beneficial to your over all skin health.
We are all fearful of the word oil when it comes to our skin especially when it comes to the skin on our face. Excess oil production can result in clogged pores and in turn result in unsightly blemishes and breakouts. This product has the unusual task of being a pre cleanser. Yes that means cleansing your skin before you actually cleanse as you normally would.
Strange Iknow but it does result in softer, brighter skin.
It uses one of it's main ingredients Olive Oil to soften, condition, nourish and heal the skin. The benefits of pure Olive Oil has been know for generations so it makes perfect sense for it to be included in this high end product. This is a light, filtered pure Olive Oil not to be confused with the heavy green extra virgin stuff we all use for cooking. That's great for your health but a bit too heavy for the skin on your face.
As always Dermalogica has included only the best high quality all natural ingredients in this product as they do all of their range. This is suitable for all skin types including especially people with sensitive skin. And strangely it works best for persons with oily skin. Treating oil with oil? Strange I know, but it does seem to work.
The instruction leaflet recommends that you gently pour some of this thick fruity scented oil in to clean hands and gently rub together, then bring your hand up onto a your dry face (it's important that your skin is dry for this stage). Then after a few moments of rubbing this into your skin using small circular motions they recommend that you wet your hands with warm water and rub your hands together. Almost instantly the consistency changes from the thick oil to a rich cream like cleanser. Once it has changed you must repeat the same procedure as before with the new textured wash. After cleaning all areas of your face you then rinse it all off using clean, fresh, warm water. Then continue with your normal every day beauty routine.
My face did feel different after using this for the first time. I noticed it felt cleaner than just washing my face as standard. It did feel strange to have to do it twice but this was only when I was first starting to use these Dermalogica products. Now it's second nature to cleanse before cleansing. Still sounds strange to say it though.

Dermalogica is one of the world's best selling beauty brands and creates lotions and potions to ensure that our skin is always looking its best. They pride themselves on the purity and simplicity of their creations and packaging, and work on the mind set that it's what's on the inside that counts. Dermalogica never pad out their products with artificial fragrances or colours, and let the active and nutritious ingredients do all the talking instead.
Precleanse is a product created by Dermalogica and it is especially designed for sensitive skin. The name of this product gives away its purpose. It is to be used before cleansing. If you are anything like me, you will be wondering about the necessity of cleaning your face twice. But when I thought of the make up that sometimes came off on my towels even after cleansing, I realised that maybe cleansing alone wasn't doing a good enough job. It also smoothes, calms and nourishes the skin and gives it an incredibly deep clean. It is acts as a make up remover and can even remove waterproof mascara.
The main reason that this particular product caught my eye, (and allowed me to swiftly ignore the hefty price tag), was the benefits that it provides for oily skin. At the end of a long day, your skin can be plastered with a multitude of sinful substances. The make up that has caked your face will have been joined by sebum produced by the face, environmental pollutants and possibly sunscreen, if the sun has decided to show its face. This formula is designed to turn the oils on the skin into a liquid, to be rinsed away along with all the other oil based debris and old make up that has been lurking on the face.
How does it work? The product contains a light weight Olive Oil which helps to condition the skin and has a whole host of other benefits. This oil helps to leave the skin feeling softer and as it is packed full of Vitamin E, nutrients, antioxidants and minerals, it will leave your skin feeling nourished. Olive oil provides a natural way to hydrate dry skin and due to its healing properties, it repairs skin damage that has already been caused. The oil is highly moisturising and also works towards combating greasiness by regulating the production of sebum.
The Vitamin E found within the Olive Oil is one of the most important antioxidants that can be found. It offers protection from the external elements such as harsh weathers and pollutants, which helps to strengthen the skin. The vitamin gives a barrier of protection to the skin, which prevents the loss of the moisture and ensures that your skin doesn't become dry or dull and improves the health of the skin.
The Apricot Kernel Oil which the Precleanser contains is another Vitamin E enriched substance which soothes the skin. It is moisturising, nourishing and replenishing for the skin. The Vitamin A in this particular oil penetrates the skin deeply, fighting against the free radicals which can cause premature aging. It is absorbed easily and leaves no sticky residue or oils on the surface.
It also contains Borage Seed Oil which has a calming and soothing effect on the skin and acts as an anti inflammatory. It helps to replenish the moisture levels of the face and smoothes the skin. It also contains fatty acids which are essential for the development of the skins cells, and therefore the skin's structure.
The product is fortified with Kukui Nut which is packed full of vitamins and minerals essential for youthful looking skin. It forms a protective layer on the skin enabling it to maintain moisture levels, but does so without blocking pores or leaving the skin feeling or looking greasy. This ingredient can also help to reduce any fine lines and wrinkles due to the fatty acids that it contains. It also contains Rich Bran Oil which nourishes and moisturises the skin. It is an antioxidant which smoothes and softens the skin.
How do you use the product? The liquid needs to be poured into the hands and massaged onto a dry face, including the eye area. After a few minutes, run your hands under warm water and continue the massaging action. When water touches the product, the oil magically turns into a milky slightly frothy formula that traps all the oils and dirt. After another few minutes, rinse off the product using water and cleanse in your usual way.
The product costs around £20 for 150ml and comes in a plain white bottle with a grey lid. It can be bought online and if you have the time to shop around you may find the product selling for a cheaper price.
When I first saw that this product looked like a pure oil, I was so scared of putting it on my already greasy and spot prone skin. But this product has never made my skin break out because all the oil is removed when it turns into the milky formula and is washed away. It removes every trace of my waterproof mascara and even glue that may have been left behind after removing false lashes.
The oil is thick but still difficult to control when removing it from the bottle so be careful if you want to avoid wasting any. It comes with a light citrus scent that is suitable for all skin conditions but primarily designed for oily skin. It is incredibly gentle and doesn't sting or feel uncomfortable.
After using this product and then cleansing the skin afterwards, you experience a deep clean feeling that makes me wonder just how dirty I was leaving my skin before! My skin feels smooth and looks glowing with health.
Despite all this, using an oil on my face still scares me, I only use it when I have worn heavy make up for a night out or on the odd occasion where I fall asleep and forget to remove my make up! Because I'm so frightened of using this product for fear of it causing spots, I won't be repurchasing Precleanser once mine has run out but this is because I'm a Scardey Cat and nothing to do with the quality of the product!
Caprylic/capric Triglyceride, Prunus Armeniaca (apricot) Kernel Oil, PEG-40 Sorbitan Peroleate, Helianthus Annuus (sunflower) Seed Oil, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Oils Of: Borago Officinalis Seed, Aleurites Moluccana Seed, Oryza Sativa (rice) Bran, Carthamus Tinctorius (safflower) Seed, Citrus Grandis (grapefruit) Peel, Lavandula Hybrida, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange), Lavandula Angustifolia (lavender), Citrus Nobilis (mandarin Orange) Peel; Solanum Lycopersicum (tomato) Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Decyl Olive Esters, Tocopherol, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Butylparaben, Citral, Limonene, Linalool.
I have to admit I was a bit dubious when I first tried this - I'd alsways managed without pre-cleansing, so wasn't entirely convinced this was a necessary step for my skin care regime! also I wasn't convinced that putting oil on my skin would be very goot for my spot prone skin. However I was proved wrong.
To use this you apply it using dry hands to your face, massaging it in (which in itself is quite pleasant!), the you wet your hands and continue to massage your face creating a creamy emulsion, and then rinse off - you then wash your face whilst your face is already wet. The oil seems to lift the dirt and make up off my skin, so that when I come to using a face wash it is actually cleaning the skin. When I remember to use this I do find the condition of my skin improves, so I would definitely recommend this. It seems suitable for fairly sensitive skin, and certainly doesn't seem to result in any discomfort/tingling etc. when I use it, however it is a little pricey at £20-30 for 150ml (but as with most dermalogica products - a little goes a long way)
It was actually by husband that first bought this product (he is often sucked in by new sounding things!) and I was a bit unsure as to what the point of a precleanse lotion was. However, once trying it I found that it was very good.
It is an oil based lotion that is used initially on dry skin to remove any oily debris or make up by gently liquifying oil based debris or sebum on the skin.
The product itself doesn't have a strong perfumed smell to it, and it feels gentle on the skin because it is oiil based.
You massage it onto dry skin, especially areas of congestion or where there is a lot of make up. Then you wet your hands and massage your face which creates a white milky emulsion that really feels like your skin is being cleaned. After that you wash it off and then clean your face using your normal cleanser.
It does feel like your face is getting a deeper clean but I would say that because I am quite lazy and extra step to my cleaning routine is a bit of a hassle sometimes when it is late so I tend to use it more when I have had make up on or I feel my skin is particularly oily!
I first tried this product as a sample and that got me hooked on it.
I am used to the concept of oil cleansers but I can see how some people would find this hard to get used to.
Oil is the best thing to clean oil - it attracts oil and removes all the oily products as well as surface oil from your skin. In addition, as it is an oil, it feels lovely and smooth on your skin and not harsh and abrasive.
The first step is to massage the oil into your dry face. I always pay extra attention to the areas which are full of make up and I'm sure your skin also benefits from this massage!
Then wet your hands and massage again and the oil becomes a white emulsion. You can then wash this off your face.
I find this brilliant to use when I've worn a lot of make up or feel particularly dirty or grimy or simply that my skin needs a thorough cleanse.
It works really well but is also very gentle on your skin and will leave it feeling soft and smooth and sets it up ready for further cleansing.
Another product from Dermalogica which give great results!
Another one who thought...precleanse? Until I tried this product that is and I am a complete convert although can't use it as much as I would like owing to funds! I was quite dubious of whether this would actually work or not and together with the fact that the product feels quite oily itself I really didn't hold out much hope at all!
The first time I used this product I was very pleasantly surprised. I made sure that my face was dirty (sounds terrible!) and had the grim from the day on it together with make up which include a waterproof mascara.
I used it as instructed and before rinsing away I still had my doubts but once it was rinsed away my skin felt completely different, really nice and clean but without the horrible tight feeling of a harsh cleanser. I was definitely feeling more confident before I even used my usual cleanser.
After using this product for about a week I noticed a change in my skin, it felt cleaner in general and I found a little more of a spark there too. Would definitely recommend.
I know what your thinking... pre-cleanse? I have to prepare my skin before I use my cleanser? Thats just another gimmick to get me to spend money! Well I thought the same when it first came out but believe me its not, it really works!
This oil based product is suitable for all skin types, yes even oily skin. I know many of you out there that have oily skin hate the thought of putting oil on your skin from the fear of making it more greasy but trust me it wont. Oil actually attracts oil so it grabs hold of all the excess sebum in your skin and pulls it to the surface along with all your make-up as make-up is oil based itself. Once this has been removed from your skin your normal cleanser can then get deeper into your skin actually really cleansing the pores rather than just the surface to give you that extra clean feeling!
To use this product you need to pour it into dry hands and apply to a dry face, this is very important! Once you have enough to cover your face and neck, massage it into your skin with circular motions like you would your cleanser for about 2 mins. Then wet your hands and and massage in again, the water will then turn it into a milky consistency, keep adding water until all the product has gone to this texture, your face should then look white not greasy. Then remove with damp sponges as usual. If you do not add enough water to the product you will not remove it from your skin properly which can then cause spots and congestion as the oil will be trapped in your skin.
I usually use about 12 drops of this so the bottle lasts about 4 months. This double cleansing gives you that professional cleanse you would get at the salon and really removes and dirt that is trapped in your pores. The smell is amazing but totally natural as Dermalogica do not use artificial colours or fragrance. Once you've tried it you'll be hooked!
'For years, Dermalogica's formulas have pioneered new standards for product performance. Using only the finest ingredients available, all Dermalogica products are non-comedogenic and contain no occlusive mineral oil or lanolin, no irritating artificial colors or fragrance, and no drying S.D. alcohol'
What Dermalogica say about their product:
'The professional's deep cleansing weapon! Achieve ultra clean and healthy skin with a double cleansing regimen that begins with PreCleanse. This plant-based cleansing oil, fortified with Olive and Kukui oils, thoroughly melts layers of excess sebum (oil), sunscreen, waterproof make-up, environmental pollutants and residual skin products that build-up during the day. When water is added it transforms this hydrophilic (water-loving) formula into a milky emulsion, easily rinsing away oil-based debris from the skin's surface and allowing your recommended Dermalogica Cleanser to penetrate even further for professional cleansing results. Formulated with conditioning Rice Bran and Vitamin E oils, this gentle blend can be used around the eye area to even remove waterproof mascara. Offers a deep cleansing ideal for even the most oily skin conditions. Contains no artificial fragrance or color. Professional recommendation advised'
How it works:
- Use as the first step of your Dermalogica Double Cleanse, and follow with your recommended Dermalogica Cleanser.
- A blend of rich oils melts through oil and oil-based debris that collects on skin throughout the day.
- Vitamin E Oil, a rich antioxidant, helps improve skin smoothness and softness.
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: is an emulsifying agent that is activated by the addition of water to release the bonded oils from the skin's surface.
This product comes in a 150ml bottle and cost around GBP 25.00
This is a very simple to inovative product which leaves your skin feeling soft and moisturised, without irratation. This product smells very organic, lavender, grapefruit and orange a surprise for dermalogica as most of their products are quite bland and usually fragrance free. you should apply to your face with dry hands and massage lightly into your skin, this product litrally disolves your makeup! afterwards remove with warm water and follow with your normal cleanser. It clears out your pores and leaves your skin clean and smooth.
The disadvanages to this product are that the product needs alot of water to emulsify it to acheive a visable lather or foam, but this is just down to personal preferance. I have also found the oils leave a slight oily residue on your face as well as making it diffacult to spread. The bottle is a squeeze top bottle, but i think a pump top would have been more appropriate as it can make it very messy as the oil is rather runny.
Your skin will have never felt cleaner!
I wanted to LOVE this product as I has waited patiently for it to be released to the UK market. However, my combination, spot-prone skin didn't like it.
I always double cleanse my face. I think it's important to remove my makeup and the dirt and grime of the day before cleansing my pores etc and I like to use an oil based product to remove my make-up thoroughly. I loved the smell of this product and it would have been an absolute pleasure to use. Please note that this contains no artificial fragrance or colour, so that smell is natural to the ingredients Dermalogica use.
The product itself contains ingredients such as olive and kukui oils which helps melt the layers of excess sebum, sunscreen and makeup etc. ( I would say though if you use a long-stay waterproof mascara or a mascara with a two-stage primer process, I would use a separate eye-make remover.) It contains vitamin E to help fight free radicals, Lavandula Hybrida for soothing the skin, Citrus Nobilis for it's refinement and antiseptic properties and Borago Officinalis Seed for it's anti-inflammatory properties.
Ingredients: Caprylic/capric Triglyceride, Prunus Armeniaca (apricot) Kernel Oil, PEG-40 Sorbitan Peroleate, Helianthus Annuus (sunflower) Seed Oil, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Oils Of: Borago Officinalis Seed, Aleurites Moluccana Seed, Oryza Sativa (rice) Bran, Carthamus Tinctorius (safflower) Seed, Citrus Grandis (grapefruit) Peel, Lavandula Hybrida, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange), Lavandula Angustifolia (lavender), Citrus Nobilis (mandarin Orange) Peel; Solanum Lycopersicum (tomato) Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Decyl Olive Esters, Tocopherol, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Butylparaben, Citral, Limonene, Linalool.
How to use : You apply the oil on your DRY hands and then onto a DRY face. You massage it into your face thoroughly and then add a little water. This turns the oil into a milky creamy substance and then remove by rinsing your face with water ( or use a muslin cloth like I do, to remove excess product and then rinse. ) Then apply a cleanser to finish the cleansing process. This is NOT a cleanser, it is a pre-cleanser only and will not prepare skin throughly enough ready for any serums and moisturisers etc.
I have friends who have dry/sensitive/normal/oily skin issues and they swear by this. But there's an ingredient or two that disagrees with my skin as it leads to blocked pores and spots. That said, my is spot prone depending on the ingredients I use anyway.
Like with any new product, I would ask your local Dermalogical salon for a sample of this first before buying the full size to see if it suits.
The bottom line is that it's a great concept because I think double cleansing makes a huge difference. but it's just a shame that this product did not suit my skin.
