I liked the sound of the skin smoothing cream when I was looking through the pile of Dermalogica products I had on trial.
What is it?
A Medium weight moisturizer designed to balance combination/dry skin.
What is in it?
Deep-moisturizing Lecithin and Aloe Gel nourish while extracts of Mallow, Cucumber and Arnica soothe and hydrate the skin, helping to restore suppleness and tone. Antioxidant Grape Seed Extract plus vitamins C and E help shield skin from environmental assaults. Formulated without artificial fragrances and colors.
I like the sound of a medium weight cream an also the ingredients sound pretty good but the reality of this cream is harsh. It costs a lot but is disappointing in the fact that it smells like the inside of a medicine cabinet. it is so medicated it has really put me off using it again!
It is, I agree a medium thickness in weight so could be used day or night but I found it quite greasy on my skin for a long while after applying the cream. It took ages to sink in!
I didn't feel this cream was smoothing. It didn't have a cooling effect on the skin which I was expecting from the cucumber ingredients.
This Dermalogica skin smoothing cream costs £47.40 for a 100ml tube.
I think this cream is really expensive and I wanted it to smell a lot nicer for the price. I appreciate the fact that it has been formulated without artificial fragrances or colours and this probably explains why it smells like it does! For me i is not a repurchase or even a re use.

Even since my 20's, I've always tried to go for a good moisturiser. And definitely one with an SPF for day time use. My mum treated me to this one many moons ago, for which I am both grateful (I love the product) and not (it's soooo expensive!) Whenever I can, I look forward to buying this lovely cream and I sincerely hope it is never discontinued!
Why is it different? Well, it's neither light and watery nor thick and greasy. I find it to be slightly more like the consistency of a night cream but, unlike night cream, it sinks in beautifully with no greasy residue; perfect as a make up base. I tend to feel more confident going bare face when using this cream as I definitely feel it has a slight 'smoothing' or 'tightening' effect (in a good way.) Some days I'll mix it with my normal liquid foundation for a lighter look.
I do tend to try and make the tube last and so will use a cheaper neck cream. Thankfully most dermalogica products come in flexible tubes which are great for cutting open to get every last drop.
The only downside I guess (which I don't mind) is that there isn't a particular smell, per se, unlike most of the dermalogica range. But I, for one, wouldn't want the formula to be sacrificed!
Skin Smoothing Cream, sounds good doesn't it?
Then add in the fact that it's a skin smoothing cream by the world renowned dermatologists at Dermalogica and it sounds even better.
That's what I thought when my good friend gave me an unusual looking clear jar containing this cream. The reason it was in this jar and not the actual packaging was because this was a tester jar from her work ( she's a dermatologist and professional beautician ) I must say I was not impressed, I have become used to receiving full sized products and at the very least tester size products, this just wasn't up to scratch ( I'm being sarcastic by the way ) I of course was grateful as I always am for being in the privileged position to try out so many amazing products for free, all for my sometimes brutally honest feed back.
This particular cream is said to be wonderful when it comes to treating and preventing the signs of premature ageing, sounds good to me. Although I'm young I love products that are intended for older skin as I live in the hope that the ingredients will be that little bit stronger and the results that little bit more dramatic / noticeable.
The main promises made by my friend were that this cream would promote circulation of the skin resulting in a more youthful complexion. Also this cream is said to significantly hydrate the skin and this in turn results in plumper, fuller looking and feeling skin. It's packed to the rafters full of good, skin nourishing things such as Bitter Orange, which also helps in the toning of the skin. As in a lot of Dermalogica products cucumber can be found, this has excellent hydrating properties ( as anyone will know after using cucumber slices on their eyes) and gives a wonderful cooling effect during application.
As always I was pleased to see that there are no artificial ingredients what so ever, so that of course means NO artificial anything. Instead of the bad stuff, this product have high levels of antioxidants, natural antibacterials and antiseptics all from the best botanical ( plant based ) ingredients.
Thankfully my friend gave me a print out containing the ingredients and also simple instructions for applying the product.
Because of it's great moisturising properties this can be used either with your daily moisturiser or as your daily moisturiser. Per her instructions I as always cleanse my face and wash off any residue with clean warm water, then with out patting my face dry as I normally would, I apply a small amount of the cream to my face ( avoiding the delicate eye area ) and neck.
To accentuate the lifting effect it is recommended that it be applied in an upward motion, from the bottom of the jaw line up past the temple, from the eyebrows up to the hair line, then from the corners of the nose out to the temple. For the neck go from the collar bone up to the underside of the jaw line. This cream can be applied twice daily unlike a lot of Dermalogica products. At first I thought, that must mean it's less strong than others. But my good reliable friend informed me that this is not the case it's just hitting your skin with a double punch for maximum results and twenty four hour moisturisation.
Thankfully this heavy moisture doesn't result in the dreaded shiny face. The cream is thick but not overly so, it absorbs fast in to the skin and leaves absolutely NO residue. Just bright, clean looking skin, as heavy creams can block the pores and cause nasty outbreaks. I have since gone on to buy this product ( with my lovely friends discount thank you very much ) so I can describe the packaging a little, although as always with Dermalogica the packaging is understated to say the least. It comes in a White squeezable tube with the distinctive grey print and newspaper like font, it also has the same grey coloured lid and it's one that can be stood on it's head, meaning the cream is always ready to go, no need to be squeezing it like a toothpaste tube for the last little bit.
One thing I should add is that the scent of this cream is not the usual Dermalogica type smell it's not offensive but it is a little bit unusual, there are no artificial fragrances as in all their range but this I must say is my least favourite smelling product that I have tried. That said the smell fades once the cream is absorbed, which as I said earlier is almost instantly so it's not really a problem. Plus it's not that bad it just doest have that light, fresh, citrus scent that I have come to expect from Dermalogica, but then again if it smelt of a bin I would use it if the results were good enough, and they are.
Thanks for reading :0) 2night.

Skin Smoothing Cream is a product that has been created by Dermalogica for skin that is drying or prematurely aging. I have combination skin that is very oily in areas but dry on my forehead and nose. Although my normal moisturiser works well on controlling the oiliness of my skin, it doesn't seem to be moisturising enough on my forehead or nose and so I get dry, flaky skin there that makes my make up look bad. This product seemed to be the answer to this problem and so I purchased it.
The product has been designed to hydrate and smooth out the skin. As it is an antioxidant, it also removes skin aging toxins, allowing your complexion to remain more youthful for longer. It also promises to tone the skin and restore its former suppleness and improves the elasticity of the skin. It is suitable for sensitive skin as it contains no artificial ingredients or colouring.
How does it work?
The product contains proteins which strengthen the skin and smooth it out. Moisturising Botanical ingredients such as Cucumber and Arnica are included in order to hydrate the skin and allows it to bounce back to its normal shape, therefore preventing new wrinkles from forming. Antioxidants from Grape Seeds and a cocktail of vitamins removes skin aging toxins which Aloe Vera heals and soothes the skin. Bitter Orange is included in order to tone the face.
How do you use the product?
The product can be used in place of your normal moisturiser or in addition to it. It is applied a little differently to the way you usually apply products of this type because it is to be smoothed onto damp skin onto both the face and neck. The cream can be applied morning and night.
Packaging and Price
The product comes contains within a plain white bottle which is in keeping with the usual Dermalogica packaging. It has some grey detailing which provides extra information and it has a grey top lid on which it can stand.
The product is pricey and I bought my 50ml bottle for around £20 but this is the price that you expect when purchasing a Dermalogica product. A larger 100ml bottle is available but this obviously costs more. The product is available from your local Dermalogica store or from a variety of online websites.
Initially I bought this cream with the view of only using it on my dry areas as I thought it would make the rest of my face oilier. The consistency is moderately thick but not as thick as I thought it would be so I gave it a go on my whole face and had a very pleasant surprise. The way that you apply the cream to your damp skin feels a little out of the ordinary at first but you soon get used to it and I've found that it speeds up my morning routine.
The product contains no artificial fragrances so that means that the aroma of the product must be completely natural. It is faint and hardly there but you do notice it as you are applying the product so close to your nose but then it fades away which is good because it's not a very pleasant smell at all. Nevertheless, the product does its job well and make up sits nicely on top of the product.
It feels light on the skin and you can forget your wearing it. It doesn't make me feel greasy or uncomfortable and doesn't really affect the oiliness of my complexion. You feel very clean while wearing it and it does a brilliant job of moisturising my dry areas. Within a few applications, it had smoothed ad hydrated my skin beautifully and there was no flakiness to ruin the appearance of my foundation.
The cream doesn't leave a greasy sheen on my face, instead it makes me look very fresh faced, so much so that once in a while, I can venture out without foundation. But only if I'm popping to the supermarket, I'm not that brave yet! It hasn't caused any blemishes to develop and caused no itchiness or irritation on my sensitive skin.
All in all, this is a great face cream for combination skin which does a brilliant job on hydrating the skin leaving it feeling soft and smooth. It leaves the complexion looking fresh and feeling clean. It doesn't clog the pores or cause any greasiness. The only drawback of this product is the price and the aroma. Other than that, I can't fault this cream.
This is the second part of my reviews on the products that were included in my Dermalogica Normal/Dry Skin kit that I recieved as a gift around a year ago for around the £18 mark. The product I received in the kit was a sample size of 22ml but the full size product to buy is a 100ml bottle and sells for around a pricey £20.
The product comes in a regular tube with a screw capped lid and looks no different to any other of the Dermalogica products. Its described as a medium weight cream that helps to improve your skins texture while moisturising and hydrating your skin. I was a little worried after I had read it was a medium weight cream as I thought it would be far too heavy for my skin as I have found the lighter the better works for me. After my initial doubts I actually found the cream no thicker to any other moisturser I have used which in a way I was quite pleased about. Although if I was looking for a heavier cream if I did have very dry skin I think I would have been a little disappointed.
The cream is white and as with most of the Dermalogica products I've used I feel that they all have the same sort of mildly clinical scent but again not overpowering. It contains cucumber and like many other Dermalogica products arnica. You can smell the cucumber scent but only ever so slightly. It contains lots of other ingredients that are all good for your skin such as amino acids (they don't sound so friendly!), vitamins A,C and E and also aloe.
My skin can sometimes feel quite irritated and after applying this it did seem to calm down my skin and took down some of the redness. It sunk in very quickly and feels slightly cooling. It doesn't leave skin feeling greasy or tight after using and my makeup applied well over the top of the moisturiser. It really does help keep my skin feeling soft and supple.
Overall I do think this is just a slightly glorified moisturiser and as much as I really liked using it on my skin I dont feel that I can justify spending £20 on something I can get from a cheaper product. I would recommend this product if you had really dry, acne prone skin as I think it would probably benefit someone with drier skin more than me!
Dermalogica is a company well renowned for its skincare products, but the brand's high prices make buying products from the range a rare event for most people. A few years ago I bought a travel skincare kit, which included a cleanser, toner and this Skin Smoothing Cream, amongst a couple of other things. I've never had problem skin, fortunately, but I do find that a good moisturiser massively improves the appearance of my face and is therefore worth the purchase if I can afford it. I have used this moisturiser a couple of times over the years and, since I love it so much, am trying to find away to justify a further purchase.
== Skin Smoothing Cream ==
Dermalogica describe this product as 'A medium-weight cream with soothing botanicals and antioxidant vitamins to maintain skin's moisture balance while improving texture, helping to restore suppleness and tone.' Put more simply, it's a moisturiser, which Dermalogica recommend is to be used on drier or prematurely aging skin. While I have patches of dryness, especially in winter, I wouldn't say that I have exceptionally dry or old-looking skin, but this cream was still recommended to me as a moisturiser.
=== Use and Effects ===
I find that a little goes a long way with this cream and only ever have to use a pea-sized amount or slightly more to do my entire face and neck. It's not a heavy cream and absorbs into your face easily and quickly after being smoothed onto skin with fingers. Dermalogica recommend that you apply to a damp face and neck, but I find no problem when using it on dry skin either. Afterwards my skin always feels lovely and soft, which no dryness to be found anywhere. Considering that my skin is not all that dry, I was worried that this cream may make my skin oilier, despite it having been recommended to me. Fortunately, I worried needlessly, as after using this cream there is neither dry skin nor grease to be seen. Makeup then glides on very well after application and it in no way clings to patches of skin or looks uneven, as it sometimes can do without moisturiser or with an inferior product.
=== Other Information ===
Dermalogica also say that this cream 'Contains antioxidants to help fight skin aging and skin damaging free radicals, smoothes fine lines and promotes elasticity' and contains 'rich emollients help shield against dehydration and pollution'.
=== Price ===
RRP for 50ml is £30.50, but it can be found for as low as £22.49 from beautyflash.co.uk, while 100ml can be found for £32.99 (RRP £43.50) on this site also.
== Conclusion ==
This is a lovely product that is great on skin, but its high price makes it only an occasional purchase or Christmas present material. That said, a little does go a long way, so it is worth it if you can justify the initial cost.
I am very interested in skin care products and I have tried many products from leading skin care brands over the last 15 years. When a new 'wonder' product becomes available then I just have to try it.
Dermalogica products have been getting lots of good press lately and for that reason I have been trying some of them to see if they suit my skin.
The latest Dermalogica product I have been using is Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream. I bought 50mls of this cream at a cost of around £22 and this included postage. When the cream arrived it was packaged with 5 other Dermalogical samples. The samples are a fantastic way of trying products before you buy full size products.
The cream comes in a white plastic tube. The tube has the name of the product on the tube with directions for use on the back of the tube. The tube made completely from plastic can be recycled after use.
The moisturising cream is a medium-weight cream with soothing botanicals and antioxidant vitamins and has been developed to maintain skin's moisture balance while improving texture, helping to restore suppleness and tone.
Firstly it is very easy to get this cream out of the tube in a measured way so that you do not disperse too much and waste any of the cream. A very light squeeze of the tube is enough to disperse the cream. The tube is designed so that the cream sits above the lid of the tube, this design makes ease of use.
The cream is a very clean white colour, there is not much smell to the cream, it smells clean and fresh, there is nothing unpleasant about the smell. The texture of the cream is best described as being in between a lotion and a cream, the texture is not thick set and has some movement in it quite like a lotion.
The cream applies easily to my newly cleansed skin. There is not much rubbing in required with this cream, the light cream texture applies really well and sinks into my skin completely leaving no residue at all.
One application of the cream uses only a small amount of the cream, I would say about 1ml and the tube contains 50mls so if you are careful with the application of this cream then it could last you for 50 days, not bad at around £22 per tube.
My make-up applies evenly after using the cream and I can apply it almost straight away, the creams absorption is so effective that I don't have to wait, great for morning use.
My skin feels soft and smooth after using this cream. I have combination skin with an oily t-zone. The cream delivers moisture to all my skin and copes well even with the combination element to my skin.
I manage to get all day moisturisation from this cream, it smoothes out fine lines and rough dry patches of skin, basically I think this is down to the fact of the full moisturised effect you get when using this cream. I don't feel that this cream diminishes fine lines and wrinkles, but it does plump up skin and disguise wrinkles and fine lines.
I really think this cream is best suited as a product for using during the day, I prefer to use a thicker, richer cream moisturiser at night.
In my opinion this is a very good moisturiser, it offers all day hydration, it has a lovely texture which absorbs really well and best of all it is reasonably priced, around £22 for 50 days use makes this cream quite affordable.
I am beginning to like and trust Dermalogica products, they really work well and deliver good results.
To begin, just a little bit of background on Dermalogica and how/why I started buying their products. Please note this information is also on my review of Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant and Ultra Calming Cleanser:
**Dermalogica is a company that was founded in 1986 by skin therapist Jane Wurwand, with the belief that everyone's skin is different and should be treated accordingly. The website www.dermalogica.com states that the products do not contain 'cheap chemicals like Mineral Oil, Lanolin, S.D. Alcohol, artificial fragrances and colours'.
I was always reluctant to buy Dermalogica products because of the price, however a beauty therapist recommended the range to me - I went for a facial and she told me that she thought I had rosacea. She used several Dermalogica products on my face and I could see the difference when I went home.
Dermalogica have several ranges of products, all made specially for certain skin concerns, such as sensitivity/redness (my problem!); acne and breakouts; and uneven skin tone.**
Skin Smoothing Cream is a moisturiser that claims to maintain your skin's moisture balance, improve texture, and restore suppleness. It contains Vitamin A, Vitamin E, aloe to moisturise, and silk amino acids to smoothe.
Being almost 31, I use moisturiser twice daily and have done since I was in my mid-teens. My skin has gotten drier as I have gotten older, and other cheaper products would make my skin sting, break out, and/or generally feel irritated. Dermalogica products give me the reassurance that I am not applying any nasty ingredients to my sensitive skin that might make my rosacea flare up.
The Cream comes in a white tube with a grey lid and Dermalogica logo down the side. I apply it after cleansing; before I go to bed and before I put my make-up on in the mornings. It is a thick white cream and a pea sized blob is enough for your entire face. It isn't heavy and doesn't sit on your face, but sinks in as soon as you apply it.
I find it only takes a couple of minutes for my skin to absorb the Cream, and when it does, my face doesn't look greasy. It feels smooth and moisturised, and I have a good base on which to put my make-up. Unlike most products, when I apply it, my face doesn't sting. Occassionally it does tingle a little but this is usually after exfoliating with the Daily Microfoliant.
I have been using this for about a year now, and I do think the texture of my skin has improved. About 75% of the time, my skin feels smoother. It does feel more supple too - I don't think I look my age but whether this is partly down to this product I don't know! My skin is not perfect and is never going to be perfect - but this product has helped me feel that better skin is less out of reach than I once thought it was.
Skin Smoothing Cream costs around £32 for 50ml. It lasts a reasonably long time and is worth it.
Thanks for reading.
The dermalogica skin smoothing cream was one of the products i used at college whilst studying beauty therapy.
I had a chance to use the moisterizer on clients, and as i also have dry areas of skin on my face i had a chance for this to be used on me during facials.
I was really impressed as i have used so many different moisterizers on my face in the past and hadn't noticed a change or improved my skin.
I decided to purchase this for use on myself at home as part of my skin care routine. It is very expensive so i bought a slightly smaller tube, but as i used it twice a day it didn't last for ages, so its better buying a bigger tube that you can get more out of!
This moisterizer is to be used on dry/mature skin, it slightly tingles after you apply it, the only thing i wasn't keen on was the smell. After a few days i noticed a change, my skin felt so much softer and supple and where as i had slightly rough dry patchs the cream had helped to restore moisture and hydration back into my skin.
This product was recomended to me by a beautician for fine lines and dry skin.
Of all skin care products, the only thing I have faithfully stuck with is moisturiser as I generally have dry skin. I have tried loads of different products over the years in varying price brackets, and with varying degrees of satisfaction.
Initially I was put off by the price of Euro36 for a 50ml tube but seeing the beginnings of wrinkles, I decided it wouldnt hurt to try.
The first tube that I bought was during the spring/summer months, and even using it more or less every morning and evening, it lasted almost six months. And I was happy to go and spend the same money again for a fantastic product.
The moisturiser is thick and 'elasticy' and you dont need to use very much of it for good results. My skin is noticeably softer and there is generally no sign of dry skin. It is an excellent non-greasy base for use under make-up, and I have never noticed any shine.
I would say, though, that now in the colder months, I use a good bit more of the moisturiser, and would possibly recommend going for an even more intense product while its cold outside.
I would wholeheartedly recomment this product!

I was asked by a well known magazine to be a tester for Dermalogica skin smoothing cream for 3 weeks.Having used this face cream twice daily on my sensative skin i was very disappointed. It smells like minty toothpaste it caused my skin to tingle slightly but i carried on with it for the trial. I forwarded my comments along with 2000 readers on the trial which will be in the Sunday mirror supplements on 13th 20th and 27th Jan 2008. The cream itself was a lovely texture and went on well but for the price which is expensive it didn't work for me.
This is a cream that is white in colour in the one i have is in a 52ml tube - which lasts me for about 4 months, using twice a day. it has a pleasant aroma that is not added but is the result of all the extract that are added to the cream. it works on normal-dry skin. And is not too heavy, doesn;t leave a residue and is easily absorbed, yet moisturises very well, and skin does not feel tight at all. I use a pea-sized amount, and that is enough for the entire face and neck. It contains: Bitter Orange, Grape seed extract, egg yolk, cucmber, arnica, mallow, ivy, aloe etc. Most importantly perhaps, is the fact that it contains Hyaluronic Acid - each molecule of this can hold 1000 times it's own weight in water, which makes for a highly moisturising product witout heaviness / grease.
Last year I decided to splash out on a facial and the beautician used Dermalogica skin care products. I'd never used them before but was really pleased with the results, so I bought some. Dermologica trained specialists do a full skin analysis and only recommend the products which most suit your skin type. In the psat I have had problems with moisturisers. They often seemed to take forever to absorb and didn't feel nice. However Dermalogica's Skin Smoothing Cream feels very different. It absorbs very quickly and leaves my skin feeling fresh and smooth. I have found in the past that I have got quite spotty from some moisturisers - but not this one. It is fragrence free and contains natural extracts, including mallow, cucumber and arnica, and aloe gel to nourish your skin. After using this I won't use any other moisturiser.
