Dermalogica UltraCalming Relief Masque
Advantages: Leaves my skin lovely and soft
Disadvantages: Doesn't stop or help rosacea flare-ups
In my never ending quest to find products to help with my Rosacea I have lost count of the different brands and products I have used over the years. There are only certain ones that actually help and others while they might not always aggravate the Rosacea they don't do much to help with the actual condition.
The Dermalogica ultra calming masque is a face mask that is actually recommended by Dermalogica for sensitive and Rosacea skin.
The mask is supposed to immediately relieve skin sensitivity and help calm it back down. With my Rosacea I can be fine for weeks at a time and then all of a sudden it will flare up. For anyone who is unfamiliar with what happens when you have a Rosacea flare-up I will explain. It usually starts with my skin being itchy and sensitive feeling which quickly progresses to stinging sensation and my facial skin becomes red and it actually looks like I have sunburn. This can happen at any time which means it is important that I have products on hand that I know are going to cool my skin down and take away some of the redness and stinging.
I love the Dermalogica ultra calming range and find that it works really well with my skin. This mask was a real disappointment for me. I found it to be a lovely mask for a weekly treat but it didn't do anything to calm my skin down when I was having a flare-up which is really disappointing as this is what it is primarily designed to do.
The mask contains loads of natural ingredients which in combination with each other promise to soothe the skin. The main ingredient is oatmeal which is something that is in a lot of masks for sensitive skin due to its soothing and healing properties.
To use the mask you just need to apply it all over your face once or twice a week and then leave it for at least ten minutes before rinsing off. Because the mask is so gentle you can use it on areas such as the eyes and lips where other masks recommend that you don't.
There is only a slight smell to the mask and when I first apply it to my face it feels really nice, almost like a thick cream. I do find it to be incredibly moisturising and it doesn't sting or irritate me in the slightest. When it is washed off I find that my skin is really soft almost as though I have spent the night with my face slathered in cocoa butter but of course without the greasiness and heaviness of using a rich cream. My skin is also left looking really clean and my pores look like they have had a good clean out.
Moisturiser goes on lovely after using the mask and it also leaves my skin in great condition for applying make-up to it. Because my skin is so soft and free from grease and shine my make-up lasts for much longer before needing to be touched up.
So as a weekly mask I think this is lovely. My problem stems from the fact that it does not calm my skin when I am having a flare-up. I tried applying the mask as soon as I felt the itchiness and stinging coming on and it did nothing to prevent the flare-up happening. I have also tried it when my flare-up was at its worst and my skin was red raw hoping that it would take some of the heat out of my skin or at least reduce the redness slightly but other than making my skin lovely and soft it did nothing to help and as this was the main reason for buying the mask it really does make me question whether it is worth the money or not.
Being from Dermalogica the mask isn't cheap and will set you back around £35 a tube which should last you about 3 months using it twice a week.
I'm only awarding this mask 3 stars as even though it leaves my skin lovely and soft and I do still buy it on occasion purely for this fact it doesn't do its main purpose which is to stop my skin from being itchy, red and stinging.
