Being a bit of a beauty product addict, I always like to try out new things and vary the brands that I use. I'm a member of the website www.latestinbeauty.com which is designed to provide members with a selection of product samples that you can choose from and order on a monthly basis. In my most recent Latest In Beauty sample box I had opted to receive a sample of this Dr Bragi Bio Marine Exfoliant. I received 2 x sample sachets containing 1ml of product. The full size product measures in at 50ml and retails for RRP £25.00. You can find further information at www.latestinbeauty.com and www.drbragi.com.
Product description: "Packed with fossilised diatom algae this 98% natural exfoliant is designed to eliminate dead skin cells and optimise your Dr Bragi skincare regime, allowing the enzyme to work on the deeper layers of the skin."
Directions for use: Apply sparingly to dry skin. Gently massage, rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Firstly, I was really drawn to this product by its claim to be 98% natural, and that it contains "fossilised diatom algae" - that sounds very cool and scientific! The exfoliant looks rather ordinary, being made up of a white coloured base fluid with a thick and creamy texture and lots of little gritty particles. It does not have any noticeable scent.
I noticed that the instructions state you should apply this to dry skin, so I made sure to cleanse and remove my make-up earlier on before using the exfoliant. To apply it, I use my fingertips and rub onto my face using small circular movements. Once my face is fully covered I go back to the beginning point where I started to apply the scrub first of all, and work over the whole face again, rubbing the small grains in to give a thorough cleanse and to make sure that my skin is getting the boost that it needs. To be honest, at this point I felt quite bored of the product. It looks plain, smells plain, and I could barely even feel the exfoliating effect on my skin. It was very gentle and did not scratch or scrape at my skin in the way that some of the harsher exfoliators can do, so I did not feel like it was working. I was not convinced that it was doing anything for my skin as it felt quite ineffective. I washed my face clean to remove the exfoliant and this is where things started to look up!
After using this product my skin felt INCREDIBLE! Exfoliating removes dead skin cells leaving your skin refreshed and looking healthy, as well as smoothing the surface and boosting circulation. Upon inspection my skin looked fully cleansed and I had a lovely refreshed feeling. I ran my hands over my face and was amazed at how smoothed and soft the skin felt. I was surprised (and pleased!) by how effectively the exfoliant had worked on my skin, without me even noticing it. I could hardly believe that such a gentle feeling product could have such excellent results. This has worked as well for me as the stronger, more abrasive exfoliators that I have used before, and the results are as good as what I would expect from using a microdermabrasion cream. I couldn't wait to use this again, and when I used my second sample the following week the results were just as impressive. This is a really high quality exfoliating product and it gives the skin a real boost leaving it in excellent condition.
I would usually be apprehensive about paying this much for a skincare product, but having had the benefit of testing it out first I can say that I would happily purchase the full size version. £25 does not seem too expensive when put into perspective, as I usually only use a facial exfoliator once or twice a week, and I would expect to get around 6 - 12 months of use from one 50ml bottle, based on the 1ml sample size providing just the right amount for a single use. I was really impressed that such a gentle feeling product can have such excellent results, and I would highly recommend Dr Bragi's Natural Marine Exfoliant.
