A poor facial treatment that did not suit me at all

Being a bit of a beauty product addict, I always like to try out new things and vary the brands that I use. One of my most exciting discoveries in recent months has been finding online companies that provide beauty boxes. These usually contain various make-up, skin care, fragrance products etc, and I have been trying a few from different suppliers. I received a full size Dr Bragi Marine Enzyme Intensive Treatment Mask in a recent delivery from Latest in Beauty. You can find further information at www.latestinbeauty.com and www.drbragi.com. The RRP for this 16ml sachet is £10.00, which is around 10 times more than I would usually consider paying for a single use face mask!

Product description: "Professional strength marine enzyme mask, designed to rapidly target redness, dehydration, loss of firmness and signs of premature ageing.
Experience a Dr Bragi treatment from home with this fabric mask, delivering the highest concentration of patented marine enzymes, ensuring outstanding results in an instant.
The skin appears plumper, smoother and brighter, ideal for a pre-party rejuvenating boost. Particularly recommended for stressed, fragile or sensitised skin types."

Recommended directions for use: Use once or twice a week on cleansed skin. Use before bedtime for optimal results.
      1) Open out the mask and, using your fingertips, place the mask onto the eye contour, carefully smoothing it down to fit the rest of the face.
      2) Relax for 10 - 15 minutes, then remove.
      3) Wipe away any excess with a tissue.

I like to give myself a good pampering when I am using a face mask, and they are one of my favourite weekly beauty treats. I was particularly looking forward to trying a professional mask as I usually go for the cheap and cheerful 99p sachets. To begin with, I made sure that all traces of make-up were fully removed and I then went about applying the mask. The mask comes in a standard foil packet to keep it fresh and moist, but rather than being a fluid that you spread straight onto the skin this was actually a real mask, and is made of a face-shaped cloth infused with marine enzymes.

The cloth was very moist and was soaked through thoroughly to give an even application to the skin. There are cut-out sections in the cloth that allow you to place it over your face with sections left for your eyes, nostrils and mouth to remain uncovered. The mask has slit in a couple of places which should (in theory at least) help you to position it correctly and get a smooth fit by folding the sections in to cover the curves of your face. I found it a little hard to smooth down properly, as once I'd got it right in one place, the mask would inevitably end up not fitting on the opposite side and I'd have to re-jig it again. It felt like it was fitted firmly against my skin, but it was impossible to do anything while I was wearing the mask because it did start to slip out of place with any movement. I actually ended up just laying on my back with my eyes closed while I had the mask on as this was the only way to get it to stay put and avoid it dropping off. If I'd had realised this in advance I would have put on some nice music or something for a proper spa treatment feeling, but as it was I did get a little bored during the waiting time.

The mask itself is made of a plain white fabric and didn't have any real, discernible scent to it that I could tell. It should be left on for 10-15 minutes to allow it to really get to work on your skin. I left it on for the full 15 minutes and it did give a lovely cooling and soothing feeling during the time I had it on. One main benefit of using this type of face mask is that there is no messy cleaning up to deal with afterwards, instead I just simply peeled the mask away and wiped over with a tissue as recommended, which was very quick and easy to do with minimal effort required.

As recommended on the packaging I used this before bed as this is supposed to help give the best results. After removing the mask I noticed that my skin looked somewhat brighter and dewy, but I'm unsure whether this was an actual benefit or just the residue left behind from wearing the mask, as the effect did not last until the following morning. Also immediately after removal my skin did feel smoother to the touch. Before my morning cleanse and tone routine I checked to see whether the mask had worked its magic while I slept, but instead I noticed several negative results. Firstly, my previously smoothened skin felt papery and a little dry to the touch. I could not see any of the claimed benefits such as re-hydrating, improving firmness or anti-ageing. I was also shocked to see that I had broken out with an army of pimples across my cheeks and across my jawline. I would certainly not expect this sort of reaction from using any product, let alone one that is supposed to be of professional quality. It is sadly lacking in its performance and even though my skin doesn't generally need much work this did not improve it at all, and overall my complexion was in a worse condition than before I had used the mask, making me wish I hadn't bothered at all.

Overall I cannot recommend this face mask as it is very expensive for a single use product, and it didn't give my skin any real benefits. I don't usually have reactions to products and did not feel any sensitivity at any time during using the mask so I was pretty unhappy to have a breakout after using it. It doesn't perform as well as some of my favourite face masks which are only one-tenth of the cost, and as well as not fitting correctly on my face, it also doesn't extend down to treat the neck which was another point lacking. I certainly wouldn't use this product again and based on my experience there is nothing to make me recommend it to anyone else either. A real disappointment from Dr Bragi on this occasion.
