Elemis Balancing Lime Blossom Cleanser
Advantages: It smells lovely, and does remove dirt
Disadvantages: Very expensive for a product that gives average results. Doesn't feel nice on my skin
Elemis lime balancing
I bought the Elemis balancing lime blossom cleanser as part of a set a couple of years ago, I gave away some of the items as gifts, and kept a couple for myself, this being one of them. Normally this cleanser would cost more than I would be willing to pay for something you wash down the plug hole, but as it was part of a good offer it practically came free. You retails at about £19 per 200 ml it is available fairly widely on the internet and Elemis spas, presently it can be bought for £15.52 at Lookfantastic.
"This uniquely textured, fresh scented lotion is brimming with active extracts of Lime Blossom to help naturally balance and repair the skin. Ideal for balancing combination or teenage skin types prone to breakouts".
How the product looks etc.,
I love how this cleanser looks in the clear soft touch plastic pump bottle, it is a pure soft white, and looks the same on dispensing. The dispenser releases just the right amount for me to cleanse my face and neck. Once pumped out the texture is almost like a smooth double cream, it's not runny but it doesn't sit in a quivering mound on my fingers either. The smell is beautiful, fresh and fragrant but not a strongly perfumed scent, it just smells natural and clean.
How I use
As instructed I apply this to my face with my fingers working it over the skin into all the little nooks and crannies around my nose etc. You can remove it with dry cotton wool or similar, or as I prefer a warm moist muslin cloth or flannel (or just moisten the cotton wool/gauze)
How it feels on my skin
My skin tends to be oily or comination so I wouldn't normally choose a cream cleanser but as I got this kind of free I went with it. The way it feels on my skin confirms that cream cleansing products don't really suit me. It feels as if it's sitting on top of my skin rather than getting all dug into the make up and dirt (perhaps this has a high water content and the cleansing ingredients aren't enough to break up the oil). After working on my skin for a while it does seem to start shifting things, but it doesn't feel nice there's a kind of artificial almost silicone feeling to it. I think this feeling is mainly because I have oily skin, because on my youngest who has dry skin if just feels like most other cream cleansers.
How it performs
When I wipe it off if I'm not wearing make up, which is usually the case, then there is not much apparent on the cloth, however my skin does look and feel clean. I wouldn't expect much grime to be apparent when at home and not wearing make up as I live in a fairly rural area and don't spend much time near traffic. Of course there is dirt to be picked up in rural Wales but not the airborne pollution I might find in Swansea for example (I did notice a marked difference in the dirt removed when cleansing my skin - with other products - when I worked in Swansea years ago). If I am wearing make up it removes the face make up easily, but waterproof mascara and eyeliners prove quite problematical for it. It will get a bit off but if I insisted on just using this I would be there all night reapplying and rubbing off. So this means that I have to use a separate eye cleansing product.
Something that I really had to do with this cleanser and never have to bother with normally is using a toner. Now if I'm left feeling a little oily after using other cream cleansers a splash of water is normally enough to leave my skin feeling freshened and free of oily traces. Not with this, luckily there was a sample size of the balancing lavender toner in the gift pack too, which I carefully hid from my girls so it lasted me for the duration of using the cleanser. If I skipped using the toner my skin didn't feel soft and clean it just felt greasy and as if it needed a good scrub. After using the toner though this feeling disappeared and my skin did feel nice and clean and fresh.
I and my daughters used the cleanser right to the bottom of the bottle... I didn't buy it for us all, but it appears that in our house what's mine is theirs and what's theirs is theirs. Sadly once we had finished the bottle none of us noticed any difference to the condition of our skin as far as balancing any tendency to breakouts, or dry patches, or excess oiliness.
Although this product smells beautiful, and the minimalistic packaging looks lovely on the shelf I wouldn't buy it again, as on my skin it didn't do what it claimed, and would have increased the amount of products I have to purchase as it made a toner after use and separate eye make up remover essential. If I was going to splash out on a non 'drugstore/highstreet' creamy cleanser again I would definitely opt for Liz Earle's Cleanse and Polish, as this is one creamy cleanser works well for all my family we love it... Ooo I feel another review coming on...
Summary: A product that I'm sure works well for some, but it didn't suit me or my family. Too expensive
