Exfoliating is an important part of my skincare routine. Not only does it leave my face smooth, clean and unblocks pores, but it definitely makes applying make up more flawless. There are so many different brands and types of exfoliants from the very grainy weekly scrubs to micro granules which can be used more often. My personal favourite is the Elemis Skin Buff.
Available in a 50ml tube for around £20 it is quite pricey compared to something like Neutrogena Scrub at £4 for 150ml but I don't have to use much so it lasts months. Rather than plastic beads, the Skin Buff uses phytoplankton for granules which are better for the environment. The Skin Buff claims to "Re-energize dull and lifeless skin with deep cleansing phytoplankton, which gently exfoliate, leaving the skin brighter and allowing it to breathe".
After dampening my face, I just use a pea sized amount of Skin Buff and massage it over my skin then wash off with warm water. The only thing I don't like too much about the scrub is there's no lather so although it's coming out in a cream which contains sunflower seed oil, Shea butter, beeswax and chamomile, you really only feel the many granules on your skin which are actually not easy to spot in the cream. It will redden my skin but this is mainly down to it stimulating blood flow as it is being massaged into my skin. The redness doesn't last long as the granules are not harsh on my skin and my skin never feels tight but as with any exfoliator, you do have to moisturise so it doesn't dry your skin out.
With other scrubs I find some can be too harsh on my skin so they do scratch more, dry my skin out too much or make my skin very oily. Does it leave my skin brighter? I've been using it so long my skin always looks smooth and shiny but not in a greasy way, just more polished. I've also never had problems with breakouts using this. It is quite unisex and men will find exfoliators help with shaving. Although there is a scent from the tube it's not strong and really only of the Shea butter but it never lingers on the skin.
Because the Skin Buff is removing dead skin it's really important to remember to use a moisturiser or foundation with an SPF to protect your skin even during winter.
I would definitely recommend the Elemis Skin Buff. As with a lot of skincare products though, it won't be for everyone. Some will still find this too rough on their skin. It does have a high price but I love how it cleans my skin leaving it smooth where cheaper products would scratch my skin too much or leave it overly dry. Because it is gentle you can use it more often than once a week. The only thing I would have liked was a little lather but the ingredients in the cream don't leave my skin tight or dry. There are salon sizes available online (250ml) which are far more cost effective and would easily last over a year with regular use but the PAO is only 6 months so better to save on wastage with the smaller size.
Elemis don't test their products on animals.
I first encountered elemis products quite a few years back my mum is ill so QVC was a godsend at Christmas and birthdays, anyway I have really awkward skin that is very oily, dry and red all in different places (lovely hey) I also have very sensitive skin so have to be careful of reactions to products. But this is not an issue with elemis products. You can often get the skin buff in gift packs or collections or you can buy it alone.
A full size tube is 75mls and this lasts me approximately six months using twice a week. The texture of the buff is very fine and it can feel a bit like sand paper but in a good way, it is a cream with very small granules within it and the fact that they're so small makes it really efficient at getting to places such as down the sides of your nose and because its so fine you do not need to use a lot of it
you can really feel it working when using it removes any dead skin and sloughs away impurities just be careful around spots or it will take the head off. After using it you may think you skin is a bit red but after a minute it settles and your skin is left gleaming. Your skin feels really soft with that dewy kind of feel to it. It really does make your skin radiant. But be warned once you have used this no other exfoliator will ever match up and its not exactly cheap, but well worth the money.
This is the best product for purely exfoliating that I every used. It's a clear ge that is full of very small granules. It smells gorgeous and when you use it, it feels like it is having a polishing effect. It is not harsh on the skin and this is probably down to both the fact that the granules feel uniform in size, they are small and the lotion that it comes in is a very good quality with natural essential oils added. This was one of the first elemis products that I used when first going for professional treatment for my problem skin. It's not a cheap product and you won't find it in any shop or chemist. It tends to be sold in the larger department stores that have specialist counters for Elemis or in beauty salons. It is a luxury product but it doesn't go off very quickly so you can save it for a treat.
I love love love this product.
I first tried it years ago from John Lewis. Now this product is not exactley cheap at £20 plus for a 50ml but my god it is worth every penny in my book.
I have very red, sensitive skin and can find it very difficult to find an exfoliator that does the job but doesn't make my skin even redder. I have tried a lot of products similar to this but nothing else even comes close to this.
The technique is really just to use a very small amount(size of a 5p) and to gently rub it into the face. Then wash it off. The tricky part for me was making sure that I rinsed all of the little bits off of my face.
The texture is like very tiny grains is a thick liquid. The smell is just a very clean and fresh like smell, nothing too offensive. I really hate heavily fragranced products so this is ideal for me.
I got a really good result from using this just a few times, my skin felt cleaner and softer and it did improve a few blackheads I had around my nose. It isn't drying at all, which can be a problem with exfoliators, and it doesn't leave your ksin feeling like you need to run for the moisturiser.
I would recommend this to everyone and the only reason I don't us eit all of the time is because it is a little on the pricey side, although having said that, QVC now do it in some really good value kits.
I think this would be a very good product for anyone with blocked pores, spotty skin or anyone like me, who has problems finding a good exfoliator.
First off, these sorts of products really depend on your skin type. Mine is combination with a slightly oily t-zone and a fair complexion with the odd breakout.
My skin hated this product with a vengence. It caused severe breakouts accross my forehead and chin, with even the odd blemish on my cheeks which I have never had happen before, even as a teenager! They still haven't cleared up properly and it's over a month since I stopped using the product, but it caused so many spots to appear, that hasn't really suprised me. I knew it was going to take ages for them to heal.
My beautician told me that exfoliators can sometimes have this effect on certain oily skin types as the exfoliating action actually irritates the sebaceous glands causing them to produce more sebum (oil) and thus causing spots. However, I have used other exfoliators before and NEVER have I had such a bad reaction as this.
I will NOT be using this product ever again so if anyone wants a barely used tube of it I have one going for free!
I absolutley love this product. I first tried it in a travel kit from Elemis. I had been searching for a decent exfoliator for ages and found them either too harsh or way too gentle. This has a creamy texture, with a very fine grainy feel. It is grainy enough so that you can fell it exfoliating, but not gentle enough so that it doesnt do anything. My skin positively glows after using this, and I would never be without it! IT smells good too!
Exfoliators can be one of the most instantly effective beauty treatments, as well as having long term benefits (if you follow-up with the right treatments). The choice of which is best to use can be daunting, but if you're looking for a good, effective, quality product but with no frills, then this one from Elemis could well fit the bill. Its unisex packaging and smell, as well as the consistency, mean this is also just right for men. Men's skin needs an exfoliator that's not too gentle, as their skin tends to be more coarse, but it mustn't be harsh either because any horrid ingredients can easily exacerbate nasties like shaving rash. This light and easy to use cream gets the balance just right. So, this lightweight cream is a wash-off exfoliator that you use just like any facial wash, but paying particular attention to any coarse or blackhead prone areas (NB, don't use this type of exfoliator on spotty skin, it can make matters worse) It contains quite small exfoliating grains but a lot of them, as well as seaweed extracts to help purify the skin. To sooth there's Chamomile, MeadowSweet, vitamin E, Sunflower Seed extracts and Shea Butter. This really does lighten and brighten the skin, and is very quick and easy to use. It comes in a 50ml tube that should last about six months if you use it twice a week, making it good value For very sensitive or exceptionally dry skin, Elemis gentle Rose Exfoliator would be a better choice. As ever with Elemis, there's no animal ingredients (except beeswax) and no animal testing. NB (in response to a question): Exfoliation is the action of removing the dead top layers of the skin (epidermis). This has several advantages: It allows subsequent moisturisers or treatments to penetrate more deeply because they're not being blocked by that dead top layer. Similarly, the dead layer will absorb more of your expensive cream or tr
eatment product but can't benefit from it. Exfoliation provides a deeper cleansing process, benefitting oily skin It also helps to minimise lines and wrinkles which appear deeper due to the dryness of the superficial dead layer. The dead skin cells help to hold bacteria against the pores which can cause spots and blackheads Deeper exfoliation can remove existing blackheads Exfoliation anywhere on the body helps the skin to feel smoother and softer Regular exfoliation can completely eradicate keratosis pilaris (gooseflesh) on the arms and legs
