Like taking medicine: it does the job but you won't enjoy it!

Being a bit of a beauty product addict, I always like to try out new things and vary the brands that I use. One of my most exciting discoveries has been finding online companies that provide beauty boxes. The idea is that you will be sent a box every month which will usually contain a selection of various make-up, skin care, fragrance products etc for you to try out, and I have been trying a few from different suppliers. I received a full size version of this Figs & Rouge Sweet Geranium Balm in a previous delivery.

Lip balm is a daily essential for me, and I always have several on the go, one for handbag, one for home, and one for work. My lips are constantly suffering from dryness and can get chapped and sore when the weather is too cold or too hot - I can't win! This balm is made by natural skincare brand Figs & Rouge and is a Soil Association certified organic product made of 100% natural organic ingredients. It costs RRP £3.49 for an 8ml tin.

Product description: "Protects your skin against dryness! Ultra smooth with Organic ingredients which are both Nourishing and Soothing!"

This balm comes in a neat little tin that is perfectly suited for putting into a bag or purse and taking about with you for use on the go. The packaging looks totally gorgeous and has a very pretty retro design over the tin, with lots of lovely attention to detail. This is the type of product that would be nice to give or receive as a gift, and you'd be proud to be seen with it on your dressing table or in your make-up bag as it is very attractive. The tin also has a neat design feature in that the edges of the top and bottom sections both curve slightly inwards towards the centre of the tin where they join together. This means that you can get a good firm grip on both pieces and lift the lid away easily, unlike other similar products like Vaseline which I find to have very fiddly tins and cause me problems with opening them properly even though the Vaseline tin is about 2-3 times bigger than this Figs & Rouge one! The product must be rubbed onto your fingertip and then transferred to the lips by rubbing it directly over the skin. The shallow depth of the tin means that even with my long fingernails I can manage to get direct contact with my fingertips and avoid scooping up any excess under my nails.

I primarily use this product as a lip balm as this has always been a problem area for me. The balm itself appears very thick and heavy in the tin, with a solid white colour to it. The texture is very odd and even from the first use I found it off-putting, as the glue-like consistency meant that the balm literally stuck to my fingertip rather than transferring easily. It takes some time warming the balm with the body heat from my hands before it spreads properly. Upon looking closely at the balm it is full of lots of small grainy particles, which can be felt when applying it onto my lips. I find that this balm will sit on the surface of my skin and coats my lips with a protective layer that feels waxy and sticky with a lingering sensation of tackiness, which is not the most pleasant experience, but it does seem to work very effectively. The balm is colourless but it does give a slightly glossy finish behind which looks natural and is pretty in a subtle way. I like to wear this balm under my lipstick to stop it from drying my lips further and it works well in providing a moisturising base for my make-up.

I find that this lip balm lasts for hours, but I still always carry it around with me to top it up as and when I need when I'm out and about. The heavy layer it leaves behind on my lips seems to really protect them as well as providing some much needed moisture. Usually my lips become chapped or dry and flaky, even with using lip balm. Since I started using this Figs & Rouge Sweet Geranium Balm my skin has been in absolutely perfect condition. The balm seems to have balanced my skin and I now have lovely smooth and soft lips without any signs of damage at all. One point to note, however, is that it does not have an added SPF I will stick to using this through the colder, darker winter months (and spring, going on the weather so far this year!) where I do not need that sort of sun protection on my lips.

This balm is not only designed for use as a regular lip balm, instead it is a multi-purpose product that can be used on the lips, face and body. I have tried using this balm on some small dry patches of skin on my body. The balm leaves behind a shiny, greasy residue which will easily transfer onto clothing or other surfaces if I'm not careful. To make the most of it, I have tried using on my feet and ankles then covering with a pair of socks before bed time to seal in the moisture and stop it from making a mess. This seems to have worked effectively and over time it does help to make my rough dry skin feel a bit softer. I've also tried it on the back of my hands as my knuckles often tend to get very dry. It takes a long time for the balm to be absorbed and it's not practical to sit around not doing anything waiting for it to soak in. It does help to soften and moisturise the skin but it's far too impractical to avoid touching anything so I prefer to use a regular hand cream instead. I did give it a go on my cuticles as and when they have started to look a bit ragged, but the balm slips off too easily and does not really have any effect in this area.

I like to use natural and organic beauty products as they seem to be better quality and I don't have to worry about adding more chemicals into my body. This is a 100% organic product that only uses natural ingredients. The plus side to this is that it is good for my skin, but the down side is that you don't get any of the more sophisticated synthetic perfumes to improve the scent. This Sweet Geranium balm has a very strong floral scent, but instead of finding it nice and natural and appealing, I think it is really quite horrible. The stuff smells pretty much exactly like my compost heap and has an overbearing heady decaying flowery scent which is unavoidable when using the product. Added to this, it also tastes bitter and I get slight hints of the flavour whenever I'm eating or drinking something, or if I lick my lips without thinking...yuk.

I'm in two minds about this product. On the one hand it is an affordable 100% organic product that comes beautifully packaged in a cute little tin that is convenient to carry around and works effectively to protect, soothe and nourish my lips, keeping the skin in good condition. Unfortunately the down sides for me are that the texture is very unappealing making it awkward to apply, the scent is too strong and smells disgusting, and the balm leaves behind a bitter taste on my lips. I'm a bit gutted that although this balm works perfectly, it's not at all pleasant to use. I have another Figs & Rouge Balm in a different flavour variety that I hope will be nicer, but I can't quite bring myself to recommend this Sweet Geranium Balm as the negatives still manage to counteract the positives.

      Lovely tin of balm

I received Figs and Rouge Sweet Geranium balm in a beauty box a while back.

      ~ Packaging ~
It comes in a small round tin which is 1 inch in diameter and 1 centimetre in height. It is a mega cute little tin and I instantly wanted to love the product as much as its packaging.
The tin is a light turquoise colour with the words 'Figs & ROUGE' embossed on the top of the tin and some busy floral pictures either side of this. There are also the words 'Balm 100% Organic' underneath and then in tiny writing around the perimeter of the tin are the words 'Sweet Geranium - lips, face & body balm'.
The sides of the tin are red and yellow stipey, but each stripe is very thin with the tin being so small.
The bottom of the tin tells me that this is an 8ml tin. It also lists the ingredients and advises, 'Protects your skin against dryness! Ultra smooth with Organic ingredients which are both Nourishing and Soothing!'

      ~ The product ~
The product is white and appears smooth in the tin like other balms that I have used. It has a strong floral smell, which must be the sweet geranium. It is a pleasant smell and I don't find it too harsh.
It has a smooth consistency, but it feels quite greasy when you are applying it. I mainly use this on my lips when they are chapped or sore and I find it to be very effective, providing instant relief and it is moisturising, without looking or feeling greasy once the product is on my lips. It doesn't feel sticky or tacky at all, which I find with most lip balms that I use. It is long lasting and I do not feel the need to regularly top it up.
I have used it on dry skin as well and it smells nice on and when it is rubbed in it doesn't make my skin look shiny or greasy.
I really like using this balm, but I do tend to use it on my lips rather than face or body. With an 8ml tin, I feel it would be used up rather quickly if I used it every time my skin is feeling dry.

      ~ Price and availability ~
I have never seen this product in the shops, but there are a list of stockists on the Figs and Rouge website, which is www.figsandrouge.co.uk. The web address is also on the bottom of the tin (I know there is a lot of information on the bottom of such a small tin).
A 8ml tin of this costs £3.49 from www.feelunique.com (with free delivery).
It is also available at www.lovelula.co.uk, www.lookfantastic.co.uk, www.boots.com and www.naturisimo.com.
They have balms available in a range of flavours including rambling rose, peppermint and tea tree, pomegranate, aloe and mint, wild cherry and coco vanilla. I'd definitely fancy trying out a few of the others.

      ~ Overall ~
Overall, this is a nice product that comes in a really cute tin, which tempts me to buy more in the range, just for the cute tin factor.
It is really effective as a lip balm. It makes your lips feel moisturised without leaving a sticky residue behind. It does not make your skin look or feel greasy either which, to be honest, I did expect it to.
It is an organic product made and has a unique flavour. There aren't many sweet geranium flavoured products that I have used!
It is long lasting and I feel it is reasonably priced. I would definitely buy this product again and would recommend it to you.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Not for me, I'll see if I get on any better with the rose variety

I got my little tub of Figs and Rouge Geranium balm in a beauty box last year. This brand seems popular for beauty boxes as I've since received the Rose version, although I've not tried it. I must admit that when I received this I dismissed it as 'just another lip balm' and put it in a drawer somewhere for a couple of months. If I had actually taken the time to read the packaging I would have seen that this is actually a lip, face and body balm, so is multi-purpose. It is also 100% organic and although I don't actively seek out organic products, I still count it as a bonus.

The balm comes on a card and the tin is very sweet. It has a vintage French sort of look to it and is very pretty. I also find the lid really easy to remove which is a good thing, as it's sometimes difficult to open these little metal tins without losing a few fingernails!

On opening the tin, the scent of the balm is very strong. It smells, as you would imagine, like geranium, but I also think there is a very slight medicinal tone to the scent. To be totally honest, the scent of this really puts me off the product (as a lip balm at least), it just doesn't seem right putting something with such a strong flowery smell near your lips!

The balm itself is white and fairly solid. I tend to swirl my finger over the top a few times to melt it slightly, otherwise it's not very spreadable. I'd say it's quite waxy in texture, even a bit sticky and I would prefer something softer personally.

The first time I actually used this was when I had a cold. The skin under my nose was dry, red and chapped and I usually slick Vaseline over the top before bed when this happens. As it was, I couldn't find any, so I ended up putting a bit of this on instead. It worked brilliantly and my skin was back to normal the next morning.

Another way I frequently use this is as a cuticle balm. My cuticles get quite dry and raggy looking so I often find myself applying moisturisers or cuticle creams. I find this balm makes a good alternative, although it is quite slow to sink into the skin, so can initially make my hands feel a little bit greasy.

As I mentioned, the strong floral scent puts me off using this as a lip balm, however I have done so a couple of times. Despite the thick texture it goes on quite easily and leaves a slight sheen to my lips. Unfortunately I find it feels quite heavy and waxy and I am conscious that it is there on my lips. I also don't like the taste, I think it tastes of perfume to some extent! On the plus side it is very moisturising and does leave my lips soft and is great at relieving chapped lips.

As I'd got my first tin in a beauty box, I thought I'd been sent a small sized tin. In fact, it seems the 8ml size I have is actually the full sized product. It is quite small especially when compared to, say, a tin of Vaseline.

I have never seen this or any of the other Figs and Rouge products available in the shops, however it is widely available online. It can be purchased from feelunique.com or lookfantastic.com and costs £3.49.

Overall, I think this is OK but I won't be buying another one when it runs out. I'm not keen on the floral smell and although I like that this is multi-purpose and it performs well, the texture is too thick for my liking. I can only give it a middle of the road 3 stars, as I feel that it is a middle of the road product.

          Disadvantages

A fantastic product - highly recommended

Figs and Rouge 100% organic balm: sweet geranium flavour

I bought this product over a week ago and I have literally been using it every day - well, twice a day. I bought this product after finding out about lanolin which is a substance produced by the sebaceous glands of sheep and it was an ingredient in quite a few of the lip balms I had been using (especially the body shop lip balms) so I didn't want to use them and I needed one that didn't contain lanolin. I found this lip balm on asos.com and I thought I would give it a try.

          - Product description (from asos.com)

"Sweet geranium balm by Figs & Rouge. Featuring a natural formula of essential oils including sunflower and rose, the all-in-one balm soothes and conditions dry skin on the face and body. Ideal for areas such as the lips, elbows, knees and heels."

          - About the product and packaging

The lip balm comes in a small tin, which is smaller than I thought it was going to be and it contains 0.26 oz or 8ml of lip balm. This lip balm is 100% organic and it contains all natural ingredients (or naturally occurring ingredients in essential oils). This product is also petroleum free; it is made in the UK and can be used on the lips, face and body - as a multipurpose balm! I bought the sweet geranium flavour as it seemed quite unusual as most lip balms have fruity fragrances and this sweet geranium one seemed quite unique. I love the design of the tin as it looks quite retro/20's style which is nice, although the tin is really quite difficult to open and it is not very hygienic.

          - Scent and texture

Firstly, the scent of the product; the scent of this lip balm is not really what I expected. The scent is a sweet floral scent but it smells quite 'old fashioned' and something I imagined my grandmas would wear as a perfume. And to me it smells a little bit like freshly cut grass too. Overall, the scent is nice and it does not really taste of anything really after a while on the lips. The texture of this lip balm was quite surprising and nothing like any other lip balm I have. The texture of this lip balm is not smooth, it is quite gritty feeling, it feels like it is composed of small round beads or grains but when massaged into the lips or skin, it applies very smoothly and not gritty at all.

          - Using the product and results

The scent of the product when applied is really nice, it is floral and fresh but it does not taste amazing, it tastes quite sweet but it is not the nicest tasting lip balm I have. I apply this product with my fingertips and the texture initially was very strange as lip balms are usually really smooth in texture but the gritty texture of this was surprising. The lip balm feels gritty on my finger but when massaged into my lips the balm quickly and easily turns to a very smooth balm. The balm on my lips feels smooth, soft and a tiny bit greasy but not overly so. The balm makes my lips look smooth and glossy but again not overly so. I like this product as a lip balm and it makes my lips really quite moisturised and not dry or flaky at all. The balm also keeps my lips moisturised for a good few hours after application and after the balm has worn off. As well as a lip balm I also use this balm, occasionally, as a cuticle balm. This product works really well as a cuticle balm as it makes my skin and nails smooth, soft and moisturised but the scent does not last more than 15 minutes on my skin, which is a little bit disappointing. This product does not irritate my skin and it does not make my skin very greasy/oily at all, it absorbs into my lips fairly slowly which is great and it absorbs fairly quickly into my skin which again is good.

          - Price and availability

I bought this balm from asos.com (free delivery all year round with no minimum spend and free returns). The balm in the flavour sweet germanium is currently priced at £3, which I think is really reasonable as I have been using this balm for twice a day for nearly two weeks and I have hardly made a dent in the balm. The other flavours include: rose which is also priced at £3 and then aloe & mint, coco vanilla and pomegranate which are priced at £5.

          Conclusions

          Positives

*Easy to use and it absorbs fairly slowly on the lips and fairly quickly on my cuticles
*Smells really nice but does not taste as good as it smells
*100% organic/natural ingredients and it does not contain lanolin
          *Gorgeous packaging design
*Good for traveling as the tin is fairly small, lightweight and the tin itself feels really durable
*Smooth texture once applied to the lips/skin
*Inexpensive and it does not irritate my skin/lips

          Negatives

*The tin is difficult to open

A 100% 0rganic Balm which can be used on your face, lips and body

Figs and Rouge Balm is a product I have recently become quite attached too. I came across it when I got a free a sample from a friend who had decided she didn't like it but thought I might. At the time I had never heard of the company nor used a product from within the range, but as it was free, I thought it was worth seeing if it was any good at all.

Taken from their website "Figs & Rouge had an idea - to create a balm that would be completely free from any Harmful chemicals & synthetic ingredients. A 100% Organic, 100% Pure, 100% Natural skincare product! Is the first thing I read about them as a company and whilst it isn't a surprise to read that they are 100% everything it was a big point I felt they were making as soon as you clicked on the website and they are also petroleum free, which is quite unusual in any balm.

The product I was given is called 'Fig & Rouge 100% Organic Sweet Geranium Balm' and it states on the tin that it can be used on your lips, face and body. The tin itself is similar in size to the Vaseline tins which you can purchase from places like Boots for 99p; this product however would cost you £3.49 for a tin which contains 8ml of balm. The first thing I liked about this Balm was the actual tin (I've asked Dooyoo to add the photo) which is really pretty to look at being a pastel blue shaded background with a red and yellow striped band running around the side. On the lid it has the words 'Figs & Rouge' which if you run your fingers over the words you will find they stand out from the tin and you are also told it is 100% organic and then there are decorate leaves in pinks, reds and yellows delicately placed either side of the words.

The first thing you notice as soon as you twist the lid off the tin, a simple task to do, that the aroma is quite spicy yet floral but with an undertone of something fruity and I have to be honest it isn't the most wonderful aroma I have ever come across, but I do like it. Sunflower seed oil was the first ingredient I noticed and whilst I haven't come across it in many other products it is used because it helps your skin keep in moisture, so if you have especially dry skin, something like this would be really helpful. Next comes Parkii fruit butter, better known to you and I as Shea Butter and which again helps to hydrate you skin, keep moisture in to ensure you have soft, smooth skin. Canina Fruit Oil better known as Rosehip Oil comes next and again it acts as a skin moisturiser and rehydrator and for people with scarring it is said that using this oil alone can help dramatically reduce the scars. Finally there is Ylang Ylang Oil which has a soothing effect on the skin as well as a balancing effect in that over-dry and over-oily skin is brought about by too much or too little sebum (the skins natural oil) being products, this essential oil works to help balance the secretion of sebum and thus dehydrating overly-dry skin and absorbing excess oil from over-oily skin. Naturally this product is called Sweet Geranium for a reason and that's because it is the main ingredient. As an ingredient it becomes the main aroma when I mentioned the spicy floral scent which stands out and on the skin it helps to create a balance between oily and dry skin in that it helps moisturise and hydrate as well as remove excess oil which can then lead to dry skin.

So the Balm itself. Once the lid has been removed from the tin you are greeted with a Balm which is quite creamy in colour as it sits there in a tin as a solid. As soon as you put your index finger on the balm to use it, it reacts to your skins temperature and becomes an oil, though not a slimy oil, which then allows you to add it to your skin really easily. Since having this Balm, I have used it mainly on my lips which when added to them creates a really nice feel, it isn't greasy but you know it is there. It does definitely soften and soothe your lips and really moisturises them. I only need to use this Balm a few times a day and never feel that my lips have dried out so badly that I am constantly having to re-apply it. I have also used it on my face, particularly my cheeks when I have been outside for long periods of time because the tin is so small, it is really easy to carry around either in your bag or your pocket and then you can use it as and when you feel it is necessary. The effect on the skin is wonderful because it creates a sort of protective layer on the skin which helps prevent the wind, rain or sun dry your skin out and leave you with flaking skin, which not only looks horrible but can be quite painful and itchy if left untreated. So whilst I have been spending time outdoors, I have always ensured that this balm has been in my pocket.

As you can imagine I love this product, it is perfectly sized for being carried around, it can be used on your lips, face and body and helps to hydrate, soothe and moisturise your skin, it is 100% organic and the tin itself is really cute. So if you want something new to try, then look no further.
