Thank God for Freederm!

Advantages: Zits are exterminated within hours!
Disadvantages: Doesn't treat the spots that stay under the skin and don't have a head
After coming off the pill last year I have suddenly reverted to my teenage years and I am covered in spots once more! I have been trying countless products to ease them and Freederm was my last resort before booking an appointment with my Doctor.
I was in Boots searching for a miracle and spotted the Freederm range. I had seen the adverts on TV and it had seemed to be aimed at teenagers so I wasn't sure about it, but desperate times call for desperate measures, so I got the gel and exfoliating face wash on the offer 2 for £7. This offer is well worth looking at as most of the range is around £6 each.
The gel claims to have "been clinically proven to help get rid of inflamed red spots". It contains nicotinamide which is an anti-inflammatory ingredient which is supposed to get rid of red spots and help to prevent new ones forming. I have 2 types of spots - the usual red ones, that appear overnight and generally have a head on them - and also the ones that stop under the skin, developing over days and never coming to a head. I was hoping the gel may help with both
The directions of use are easy. All you have to do is apply the gel as a thin film over the affected area - either where the spot is or on acne prone areas, after cleansing, but before mositurising. So that night before bed I tried it for the first time!
The gel has a faint chemical smell, but this doesn't stay on your skin or is too overpowering. When I applied it did tingle a little on a few areas, but felt cool and slick, you don't need much as it does spread well. I applied it on my problem areas and at that time I had a lot of what I class as normal spots on my nose and forehead. These 'normal' spots are the ones that come to a head. That night I didn't use any moisturiser as I thought it may 'wipe away' the gel and stop it working to its full effect, but this was a mistake. As I lay in bed my face started to feel tighter and tighter. It felt as though I had a face mask on that had dried, but I persevered and went to sleep
The next morning I woke up and my face was quite red where I had applied it and I had to apply a few layers of moisturier. After putting this on the redness began to disappear, and it was then that I really looked to see the results and I was amazed! Some of the spots had completely disappeared....not just faded but gone...nowhere in sight.
I was very excited and thought, finally a product that works like it claims! I can put up with the tight feeling for this result! Although Freederm claim that the "special hydro-gel formulation...Freederm Gel is less drying than some spot or acne treatments" this is not true on my skin. It does dry it out and I have to compensate with more moisturiser, but I feel this is a small price to pay.
I used it every morning and night for the next week and my spots got better and better. Then I suddenly got my spots on my chin that are under the skin, so sore and red and never come to a head, but stay under the skin for about a week. I think these are hormone related as they only appear at certain times! I applied the gel as I had before and hoped it would work as well on these as it had on my other spots. The next morning I got up and was disappointed to see no change. I kept applying the gel hoping in vain it would suddenly work, but to no avail. It just dried out my skin and did nothing to these spots!!
I have continued to use the Freederm gel and it does work wonders on my blackheads and spots that have a head. I can apply the gel as they appear and the next morning they are gone! But on my sore 'boil type spots' it makes no difference at all. But if these are hormonal as I am led to believe I was expecting a little much I feel!
It's really not just for teenage acne or spot problems, at the age of nearly 30 I am converted to the gel wholeheartedly. Ok so it doesn't help the spots that stop under your skin, but the normal zits are abolished within hours of treatment. What more could you ask for?!?
Summary: A product that has become a staple in my skincare routine!
