I Love... Coconut Face Mask
Advantages: left my skin feeling cleansed and smooth, strong coconut scent
Disadvantages: truly hideous to use, consistency of glue, painful to remove
Being a bit of a beauty product addict, I always like to try out new things and vary the brands that I use. One of my most exciting discoveries has been finding online companies that provide beauty boxes. These usually contain a selection of various make-up, skin care, fragrance products etc, and I have been trying a few from different suppliers. I received a full size version of this I Love... Coconut face mask in my latest delivery from "Joliebox". You can find further information at www.joliebox.co.uk, and I Love... products are available to purchase from Superdrug in their high street stores or online.
Product description: "I Love...peel off face mask deep cleans, refreshes skin and removes dead skin cells. Each mask has the most fabulous fruit extracts of mango & cucumber that are renowned for their antioxidant properties to help you achieve perfect looking skin. Scented beautifully with a gorgeous fragrance."
Recommended directions for use: Tear off the top of my sachet, apply my entire contents evenly to your dry skin, avoiding the eye area and areas of facial hair such as eyebrows. Leave me to set completely, while I work my magic, then peel me off to reveal beautifully refreshed, silky smooth skin.
I like to give myself a good pampering when I am using a face mask, but this face mask was certainly not the type of treat I was expecting! To begin with, I made sure that all traces of make-up were fully removed and I then went about applying the masque. The packaging was quite tough to open, and this mask itself is a different formulation than usual, being designed to peel off. It has a very odd consistency which seemed like it had already started to set before I'd even got it out of the packet, as it was thick and stretchy and did not spread well over my skin. I had to rub it into my face to get it to sit properly on my skin and it felt just like glue as it was very sticky. This face mask was clear with no colour to it at all, and because of the bizarre texture I was a bit squeamish about putting it onto my face and was almost tempted to stop it halfway through the application and just wash the stuff off straight away. It felt slimy and disgusting, and left me with a horrible uncomfortable feeling until it started to dry out. The sachet contained 15mls and this was enough for me to get a full application over my face. There was a lot left over so I offered the rest to my (unlucky!) housemate, and there was enough for another full face application.
The face mask had a very strong scent of sweet coconut, which I really liked as coconut is one of my favourite fragrances. However, it also had a strange undertone that smelled very salty, and I remarked to my housemate that it was particularly unfortunate considering what it looked like we had on our faces.... (not attractive!) they reckoned there might have been a salty smell as it would require ingredients to help the mask dry out to get the peel off effect. The texture of the face mask changes as it starts to dry out, and as it dried on my skin it gave quite a tight feeling. It forms a filmy layer which when fully dry can then be lifted at the edges and peeled away. The masque was ready to remove after 15 minutes, except for two patches on my cheeks that just would not dry, and in the end I just had to wash it off my cheeks with a wet flannel. The bits that did peel off were awfully painful and it felt like the mask had stuck down very firmly. Rather than the fun and silly experience that you usually get with a peel off face mask, this felt more like ripping plasters off my skin and it was very difficult to remove properly. In fact, I was still finding little bits stuck in my eyebrows and around my hairline the following day.
After recovering from tearing this stuff off my face, I noticed that the mask did indeed have some positive results. This item is described as being suitable for all skin types, and it seemed well suited to my combination/oily skin, although my housemate proclaimed it made their normal/dry skin feel "icky". The main benefit for me was that my skin felt wonderful; very smooth to the touch and thoroughly deep cleaned. I really liked the effect and couldn't stop touching my face to feel the effects. In fact, I didn't even finish off with my usual toner and night cream, as I was so impressed with the finish that using the face mask had given. The dodgy salty smell subsided and I was also left with my skin smelling strongly of coconuts. I could smell this on myself for a couple of hours after use and this was a nice little bonus as the coconut fragrance is sweet and girly.
I thought that the face mask did give good results, which is a bit annoying really considering that it was such a horrible experience to actually use it. Despite leaving my skin feeling thoroughly cleansed and smoothed, I can safely say that there is absolutely no chance of me ever buying or using another I Love... peel off face mask. I cannot recommend this at all purely because the application and removal were so utterly horrendous.
Summary: Good results but there is no way in hell I would put myself through this torture again
