      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Decent, effective wipes which are gentle of sensitive skin.

During a recent trip to Tesco I decided to swop my usual Simple eye make-up removal pads for Johnson's alternative which seemed to offer the same results for sensitive skin at a slightly lower price. I thought whilst I was trying new things in the name of saving money I may as well give their cleansing facial wipes a try too.

I've always stuck to Simple wipes as the skin on my face is extremely sensitive and face wipes have a particular habit of leaving me looking a patient in a burns unit. I experimented with other wipes for a while before settling on Simple as they were the only ones which never caused a reaction, until recently I didn't bother to look elsewhere either.

I bought a pack of 25 wipes from Tesco for £2 which I found to be a reasonable price. With skin like mine I can't get away with using cheapo own branded versions even if they perform their job amazingly so I expect to pay a little higher for such a product, £2 is actually slightly lower than I normally pay so no problems in that respect!

The wipes come in the usual packaging of facial wipes. A plastic, square packet with a sticker on top to allow access to the wipes and to be sealed back down to stop them from drying out. The packet is a cream colour with white sticker displaying the blue Johnson's logo and pink, floating feather along with name of the product and a little information about the wipes. These apparently 'remove even waterproof mascara' and are '100% perfume free' suitable for 'all skin types'. On the back of the packet the usual ingredients list can be found along with further information which tells us these wipes are 'enriched with essential, skin loving minerals and vitamins'. The wipes claim to remove make-up and daily dirt gently leaving the skin soft and cleansed whilst being suitable for even sensitive skin. A quick read of the ingredients list shows these contain no alcohol either which is the one thing I always avoid in such products so that was a good start.

The rectangular sticker peels back with ease and maintains its stick even after being opened and closed a good few times meaning the wipes retain their moisture and do not dry out. Once you've pulled back the sticker you'll find the end of the top wipe peeping through the long, oval shaped hole in the top of the packet allowing it to be easily lifted out. The wipe underneath is waiting in the same position and so on meaning it's never a struggle to remove a wipe and I've never accidently removed more than one at a time so no wastage.

The square, white wipes are a little moist without being overly wet which I like. They're a decent size, one wipe laid out flat covering nearly all of my two hands but relatively thin, you can just about see through them. Having said that they're still strong enough to perform their task and don't break apart whilst I'm wiping my face with them so I don't really see that as a problem.

The smooth wipes run gently across my face and do a decent job at removing my make-up and any daily dirt and grime which may be on my face. Foundation, lipstick and eyeshadow are removed pretty much effortlessly although these wipes don't seem to remove any of my mascara or eyeliner and I always end up having to use eye make-up remover for that task. Whilst I don't wear waterproof mascara myself I can still say with confidence that I suspect these don't live up to their claims about removing it given they don't remove my non-waterproof mascara. In all fairness though, I've found very few facial wipes will remove eye make-up thus I don't really expect them to and always have eye make-up remover to hand anyway.

These really are gentle on sensitive skin too and are the only wipes I have found aside from Simple ones which have left with no irritation and negative reaction whatsoever so I can definitely recommend these to people with sensitive skin. They do leave my face feeling very clean and refreshed although also leave it feeling quite wet. Despite the actual wipes not feeling particularly soggy these do leave me waiting a few minutes for my face to dry before applying moisturiser. On the plus, the don't dry my skin out or cause any outbreaks although don't leave my skin feeling particularly soft like the packaging claimed either.

On the whole these are pretty decent cleansing wipes. They do a satisfactory job at removing make-up and cleansing the face and are completely fine for sensitive skin. Whilst they're nothing spectacular they're gentle, reasonably effective and for a good price thus these get four stars from me.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A simple, effective wipe - gets the job done every day

With all of the different make-up removal wipes available, with varying ones on price offers each time you need to stock up again I don't tend to remain loyal to a particular brand. However, I would certainly buy these again.

      THE PRODUCT
Johnson's wipes come in the usual resealable packs of 25 wipes. The re-sealable function is good - some packaging often stops resealing after the first few times, and these need to be resealed over 20 times so the adhesive needs to be good to prevent them drying out and becoming unusable. Mine lasted to the end of the pack - much better than most which can often fail before halfway!
The wipes have a great thickness - the pack looks a lot chunkier than the others on the shelf and this is reflected in the fact that the individual wipes have a close weave and feel very strong. The wipes feel very fresh and there is no oilyness or scent. The main function of this product in my daily routine is to remove make-up, rather than simple cleansing, and these certainly do the job there. They don't require much pressure to remove eyeliner and mascara and there is no oily residue left on your face after usage. A great product.

      THE PROMISE
The 'daily essentials' line on the packaging is certainly accurate, as these are a daily product for me. The blurb on this pack also makes a few other promises...
100% perfume free - this is very true of these wipes. They feel very natural and clean which is exactly what you want from a product like this.
The quality guarantee is warranted as, as mentioned above, these wipes have a great thickness and it only takes one to remove a whole face of make-up, without having to resort to trying to find a clean patch on the wipe.
Finally, the 'removes even waterproof mascara' line - this is another fair claim. I always use waterproof mascara and these wipes did the job well every day. It's not an effort to remove all of your make-up with one of these wipes, even the stubbornest black waterproof mascara - again, doing the job you need it to.

      THE PRICE
Johnson's wipes are available in several other types (oil balancing, nourishing etc) but I prefer make-up removal products to be as plain and simple as possible so as to feel like they're really working. All of the variations tend to be the same price - around £3.15 in Boots. They're pretty much in the average price range for all brands - only the supermarket own brands tend to give much more competitive prices. However, right now these wipes are £1.51 on the Superdrug website, definitely worth snapping up!

There are so many different wipes available, but Johnson's certainly hold their own amongst the range - a product that does exactly what you need it to do. I would definitely use these again.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Not bad

Having recently become a fan of Simple's face wipes after I was sent a free pack to try, and having been pleasantly surprised I decided to test some of the competitor's...

Superdrug was running a buy one get one free on the all Johnson face wipe range. There were several varieties to choose from all priced £3.05 each.

This one was in cream coloured rectangular packaging and was a fragrance free variety. My skin, though I am not sure I would call it sensitive, takes any opportunity it can to get blotchy or spotty so I do try and keep what I buy fragrance/colouring free if possible. I'm not sure I want a face wipe make my face smell of anything anyway.

As usual, you lift up a tab in the middle and pull the wipes out of a slot. The tab seems to be very gluey which is good because if it is not, then the air gets in and the wipes will dry out which is unpleasant and best avoided. There were 25 wipes in the pack which is the same as Simple offers.

The first thing that struck me was that they seemed quite sturdy, some wipes can be so thin as to make you feel that you are going to go through them but now with this. The second thing was that it was very moist. I really dislike dry wipes as I find they need to be rubbed on the skin much more to get the makeup off but I found that these were just a bit too far in the opposite direction and could have stood to be slightly drier. My face was slightly glistening after using it which I didn't like much.

In terms of how it removed make up, it did okay, better than the Soap and Glory ones I have also tried recently. It only required 1-2 swipes on a patch to get the makeup off. However, it didn't perform quite as well as I would have liked around the eyes and there was still a bit of mascara when I came to clean my face with a hot flannel afterwards. On the plus side, my skin did not feel dry at all after usage.

I'll keep using these till they run out but at the moment, Simple might be the winner.
