I have really rough skin on my face which is one of the more unwelcome symptoms of having an underactive thyroid. My face always feels like sandpaper and it gets sore quite quickly and my skin is really dry too. I wanted to find something that would get rid of the flaky skin on my face without leaving me as red as a beetroot so I had a look in Boots and found this product by Johnson's and thought I would try it as they are best know for making things that are suitable for a baby's skin so thought it would not harm my 54 year old skin either.
The product is called gentle exfoliating wash but being a bit naive even at my age I hadn't got a clue what you were supposed to do with it and didn't read the back before using so my first attempt was a bit of a disaster. I had bought myself a pack of cotton wool and squeezed a tiny bit out on some of the cotton wool and then used this to wipe my face over. The cotton wool felt really rough on my face and by the time I had done all of it my skin was red raw. I rinsed it all off again and put some moisturiser on and left it for an hour for the redness to go but then my face did look a bit smoother.
The next day I decided to do what I should have done in the first place and read the back of the pack. It told me to lather some up on my hands and then wash with it and rinse off. I found this much easier to do. The wash lathered up nicely and it felt much better on my face. It was very grainy like it had bits of sand or grit in it but it didn't feel horrible or painful, and using my hands I could get it into all the cracks and creases and rub more on the bits where the flaky skin builds up more. After giving it a good wash I splashed my face with some clean water and used a bit more of my cotton wool to dab it dry then applied my moisturiser and my face felt lovely and smooth and this time it was not bright red.
I do not use this every single day but about every other day and have found it really does work for me and my skin is looking a lot better than it has for years. I would recommend this wash, it was a good price, I think I paid about £2.90 for it at the time and it seems to be lasting well.
I like to use a gentle exfoliator on my face every couple of days to keep it feeling fresh, smooth and deeply cleansed and for the past few years I have found myself increasingly loyal to the Johnsons Daily Essentials Gentle Exfoliating Wash (apart from those few seriously bad skin days when something more hardcore is required and I have to revert to my trusted St Ives face cement!).
The Johnsons Daily Wash is suitable for all skin types and comes in a 150ml tube for £3.09 from Boots (although it is often on a 3 for 2 offer or other skin care offers so I always stock up during these periods rather than buying it at full price). The tube is fairly unexciting really, not that this is a bad thing! It's a plain white tube which sits on a pale pink flip top lid. If you've read some of my other reviews you'll know that a flip top lid is a big bonus for me as I hate having to screw tops back on when my hands are full of products. So with this wash it's very easy to just flip the lid up, squeeze a small amount of the wash into your hand and flip the lid back on again.
According to the packaging this wash is "enriched with essential, skin loving minerals, vitamins and rounded micro beads and gently polishes away dull, lifeless skin whilst caring for all skin types". Whilst I can't really confirm the skin loving minerals and vitamins, what I can tell you is that my skin really does feel smoother and softer after every time I use this wash. I tend to use it every other day to get rid of the grime that can build up, after I've cleaned my makeup for an extra deep clean.
When you squeeze the wash into your hand you can instantly feel a very slight grittiness to it, which I assume to be the rounded micro beads and when you massage it into your (damp) skin it really does feel like they're penetrating deep into your skin to get rid of all the impurities and deadness in it without feeling highly abrasive and like it's ripping your skin off! It's very easy to apply, lathers nicely and doesn't take too much effort to rinse off afterwards either.
The smell of this wash is really very pleasant, nice and fresh smelling with a gentle floral hint in the background.
Although it's recommended that you use the Johnsons Daily Essentials Day Cream after washing your face with this, I never have done and stick to my usual moisturiser (Nivea). I do always find it necessary to use a moisturiser afterwards otherwise my skin can feel a bit tight. Together, these two products make my skin feel clean, exfoliated, refreshed, smoother and moisturised and as long as I keep seeing these results I would not be tempted to try any other face wash.
I'm really struggling to find anything negative to say about this face wash as I love everything about it - the fragrance, the texture, the affects it has on my skin, the ease of use. I suppose if I have to say something bad about it it's that it can't cope with the horrid clogged pores of high summer when my face has been clarted in very high factor suncream and at these times I do use something more intensive. But all in all, for a daily (or every other daily!) face wash the Johnsons is exactly what I'm after and as you can frequently buy it when it's on offer it is a very economical exfoliator because, as I only need a little splodge (about the size of a 20p piece), a tube lasts me about 3 months.
So if, like me, you generally tend to have problem free skin and are looking for something relatively gentle yet deep cleansing, give it a go, I'd highly recommend it!

Johnson's has dedicated certain products within their skincare range specifically to people with delicate skin, in order to provide effective cleansers which are supposed to avoid aggravation and excessive drying. In the past I have had bad reactions when products have irritated my skin and so I am often on the lookout for products designed for more sensitive skin.
With micro exfoliating beads, instead of larger particles, this product is thinner than I first expected and does not have an excessively grainy texture (like many of the other exfoliating products out there). This means that when it is applied and massaged into the skin there is no harsh rubbing of the skin or noticeable irritation. Instead it provides a refreshing cleanse which gradually removes the dirt and blemishes from the skin. It has a pleasant smell, although it is by no means overpowering, and the colour of the product (white with pink beads) reflects the gentleness of this wash. The clear tubing makes it easy to see when the exfoliating wash is running out; useful if you use it regularly.
Overall, I have found this product provides soft skin whilst also removing any dirt or dry skin not tackled by ordinary cleansers. It can be slightly drying so you should bear this is mind if you have skin which has a tendency to be sensitive. I have found just applying moisturiser straight after use deals well with this problem and allows me to gain the super soft skin without excessive aggravation.
I regularly use Johnson's products ranging from eye make-up pads, wipes to baby lotion. I have sensitive skin and also often suffer from dry skin. I therefore have to be careful with the products I use particularly on my face.
I was initially drawn to this product because it was a Johnson's product and their products are always safe to use on my skin type. I was specifically looking for a product that I could use occasionally that would exfoliate my skin without completely drying it out. This product seemed ideal as it claims to be 3 in 1. It claims to cleanse, gently exfoliate and remove impurities. It is also soap free which is important to me as some soap dries my skin out quite badly.
I regularly use this product although not every day. It has quite a sweet smell to it and is very quick and easy to use. I find that the gentle rounded micro-beads are not too harsh on my skin and after using this product my is always very soft and smooth. This product is great to use to exfoliate your skin without drying it out.
I would recommend this product even to people with dry or sensitive skin.
I am loyal to the St Ives face scrub and use it everyday to keep my skin from breaking out. It does however often dry out my skin, even though I have generally very oily skin, and so I like to have another face wash on the go, so I can turn take with the St Ives wash. I have to be very careful however, as I have sensitive skin, so not everything has agreed with my skin in the past.
A month or so ago, I noticed that Tesco had some Johnson's products on offer, including this Johnson's Face Care Daily Essentails Gentle Exfoliating Wash, which usually retails around £3, but I got it on offer. What attracted me to this product, was firstly, that it was exfoliating (which is what keeps my skin from breaking out) and it was 'suitable for all skin types', despite is still having parfum in the ingredients on the back of the product.
This product comes in a tube, with a pink lid, and contains 150ml of face wash. On the reverse of the tube, it says that this daily essentails is a 'complete range of facial cleansers and moisturisers, developed with Johnson's expertise in soft, delicate skin to give you gentle and effective skincare. In terms of this particular wash, is says that this is 'enriched with essential, skin loving mineerals, vitamins and rounded micro beads' which 'gently polishes away dull lifeless skin whilst caring for all skin types'. It also states that is includes glycerine to help soften. On the back it also claims to be 'suitable for sensitive skin'.
I have been using this now for a couple of weeks, and I have been very impressed. I use it alongside the St Ives face wash, but I have had no break outs, and more importantly no adverse reactions to the product, despite it having parfum inside.
Unlike the more gritty St Ives scrub, this is a creamier wash with visible exfoliating beads. It is not as rough on the skin as the St Ives, and so it ideal to be used alongside it, since this provides a gentle exfoliating the day after I have used the grittier St Ives wash. My skin does feel smooth and clean after using it, and there is a pleasant baby fresh light scent to the face wash.
I will certainly be continuing to use this, and will likely buy some more when it is used up, although if it anything that other tubes of face wash, it will last me a good couple of months. Even at £3, I would still be likely to purchase it, as I think it is a good product at keeping your skin clean and clear, as well as keeping it smooth and soft.
