Advantages: Smooths and hydrates skin, good value for money, no wastage, pleasant smell
Disadvantages: None!
When I leave my skin to get on with its own thing and don't use any lotions or potions, I can get a few dry patches of skin, especially on my face. As a result, if I want to avoid looking like Mr. Blobby, a good moisturiser is something I can never do without.
My moisturiser of choice is the Johnson's Daily Essentials Hydrating 24Hour Day Cream, with SPF15. I use the cream for normal skin, although it is also available for dry skin. Each 50ml pot retails for £3.99 from Boots, but there is currently a promotion where you can buy 2 for £4. 1p extra for a whole extra pot of moisturiser......? Excuse me while I rush off to stock up!
I don't recall what initially attracted me to this product, as I've been using it for several years and just picked it up on one of my trips to Tesco. I've been using it ever since!
For £3.99 you may expect to get a slightly bigger pot than the tiny 50ml affair you will find inside the box - at first I remember thinking I'd been ripped off! However, the pot feels good quality and sturdy, and will look simple yet smart on your dressing table.
The screw-off lid leaves a wide opening, which makes it easy to get ever last bit of the cream out. No wastage means you definitely get your money's worth. In addition, you only have to use very little each time, so a pot can last me several months, making it very good value for money.
I only need to use a tiny bit of cream to cover my whole face, and it sinks into the skin within seconds. It doesn't feel greasy or tacky at all, yet doesn't feel like it's been absorbed away to leave your skin dry again. The moisturiser will leave you with dewy, fresh-looking skin, but I've never found that it looks greasy at all.
The biggest benefit of this moisturiser is how it leaves your skin feeling so soft and smooth. From the moment it is rubbed in, you will notice that your skin is left feeling softer and more supple than before. What's more, this feeling isn't short-lived. I use this moisturiser twice a day - once in the morning and once before I go to bed. When I moisturise in the morning, by the time I go to bed my skin doesn't feel like I need any more at all - it feels just as smooth as when I first apply the cream. However, I apply it anyway, just to keep any dryness at bay. Even with this, I don't get any excessive build-up of cream, and as I mentioned before, my skin never feels greasy.
The moisturiser has a very pleasant smell to it - it smells like roses if you ask me! I'm not sure it's entirely natural, a hunch which the ingredients list seems to back up! Nevertheless, the aroma is very pleasant and is similar to that of the Johnson's facial cleansing wipes which I have previously reviewed. The smell isn't strong and doesn't linger at all, which I quite like as I can use some of my perfumes, but I know some of you like to be able to smell your moisturisers all day long.
I mentioned the Johnson's facial wipes, as previously reviewed. If you use these together with this moisturiser as part of your skincare routine, they complement each other perfectly and really help to keep your skin feeling even softer and smoother than before.
The only thing I'm not sure about with this moisturiser is the Sun Protection Factor it has. This is not something which I specifically want in a moisturiser, as I feel that if I need to protect my face from the sun I'll slap on some suncream. Furthermore, with an SPF of just 15, it's not particularly strong. I can't really comment on its effectiveness, because during the few days of sun we get throughout the year, although I have never been burnt on my face, you can certainly see when my nose, cheeks and forehead are touched by the sun. It may provide a certain amount of protection, but not enough if you want to spend all day in the sun.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this moisturiser. I think that for the price, you can't get much better - even for the top-of-the-range, designer products, I don't think you'd find anything which was much more effective, so why pay so much more? I'm not going to knock any stars off for anything to do with the moisturiser's SPF rating, as it's not something I've really tested in any way scientifically. As a result, I'll give it 5stars for a top-notch moisturiser!
Summary: An excellent, must-try moisturiser
