Advantages: Clean skin and leave it feeling soft, smell nice, not too expensive, get rid of make up, good size
Disadvantages: Wet, sometimes packet doesn't seal properly, wish there were more in a pack!
If you've read some of my previous reviews you'll know that when it comes to skincare, when I find something I like I'm very brand-faithful and rarely stray to try something different. However, about a year ago I was looking to add some face wipes to my skincare routine, so I felt confident picking up a pack of Johnson's Daily Essentials Refreshing Facial Cleansing Wipes from Tesco, as they are made by such a reputable brand.
The wipes which I use are for normal skin, which come in pink packaging. Johnson's also offer Nourishing Facial Cleansing Wipes for dry skin (blue), Balancing Facial Cleansing Wipes for combination skin (green), and Fragrance Free Facial Wipes for all skin types (a kind of pinky peachy colour). I have only ever used the wipes for normal skin, so will base my review on these.
Each pack contains 25 wipes, and they can currently be bought from Boots for £2.99, or two for £4. They are also often on special offer at Tesco. Although you may find other brands of wipes are cheaper, these are good quality. However, I also feel that for the price they should give us a few more wipes per pack. I use one each morning and one each evening to remove my make up before I go to bed, so each pack lasts me less than two weeks. Even if they did double packs I think that'd be better - I suppose it explains why so often they're on special offer!
On to the wipes themselves...
They're fairly large in size, which is very practical. I haven't measured them exactly, but if I hold one over my face it can almost cover the entire surface of my face. Not that I make a habit of this, you understand... ;)
The size of the wipes is great, as after a long day at work when I come home to take my make up off, it's big enough to wipe up all of my make up without getting clogged up. With some wipes they're so small that it gets to a point where they end up just moving make up around your face, but there's no such problem with these!
Regarding the removal of make up, they claim to remove even waterproof mascara. I can't comment on this as I don't own any waterproof mascara (it's on my Christmas list though!), but these wipes do easily tackle ordinary mascara. I have no problems clearing it all away, and can only presume that they will remove tough waterproof mascara as well.
These wipes are quite wet, which I know is a downside for some people. When I wipe my face with one of these wipes, my skin is left feeling damp and a bit sticky for a minute or two while it dries. Personally, I don't mind this as I don't like drier wipes, and I always leave my skin for a few minutes anyway before applying anything else over the top, but for those who don't like wet facial wipes, you may not be impressed with these.
I will say, though, that the wetness does not last for long. After less than two minutes my skin feels dry and soft, and I experience no dampness, stickiness or tackiness throughout the rest of the day.
As I say, my skin feels softer from using these. It doesn't feel exfoliated or deep cleaned, but my skin does feel lighter and my pores don't feel clogged up at all. Now that I've been using these wipes for over a year I probably don't notice anything exceptional anymore, but I remember when I started using them and I was surprised and impressed at how my skin was left feeling smoother, firmer and cleaner.
The wipes do have a pleasant scent which is very subtle. I can't put my finger on it, but they do smell perfumed rather than of anything natural (Parfum is included on the ingredients list, although I won't provide a full list of ingredients this time). Not ideal, but at least they have a pleasant smell rather than a bad one or no smell at all! The smell doesn't linger on the skin though, which I don't mind, but I know some of you like to be able to smell the products you use all day long.
The only other bugbear I have with these wipes is the packaging...not the fault of the wipes themselves, but they are affected. The wipes come in a packet, with a large resealable peel-back sticker, through which you pull the wipes. After several openings and closings I find that this sticker can lose a bit of its stick, so the wipes can become slightly dried-out, which I don't like. However, when the sticker does stick, it sticks fast and there are no gaps in the packaging at all, which would dry out the wipes.
Overall, these wipes are great for cleansing and toning skin and removing make up. Facial wipes are a staple item in every woman's beauty kit (or at least they should be!) and these Refreshing Facial Wipes from Johnson's deliver everything I expect from face wipes. If you team them up with Johnson's Daily Essentials Hydrating 24Hour Day Cream - which I will get round to reviewing eventually - and use both as part of your regime, they really complement each other and leave skin feeling soft and smooth. They work perfectly for me, so I won't be trying anything else for as long as I can see!
Summary: Face wipes which may not be perfect but work well for me and leave skin looking and feeling great
