*Why I want the product* I hate applying my makeup in the morning and being happy and then having a lovely shiny face a few minutes afterwards, I am one of those people who are forever blotting or carrying oil absorbing powders with me to tone down all the shine. I have tried a lot of 'mattifying' products in the past and none have done what was claimed so I always ended up going back to the drawing board, or blotting and powdering all the time. A while back I heard people commenting on La Roche Posay Effacalr M and how brilliant of a product it was at mattifying their skin. In all honestly I never bothered to research this product or brand as I thought it was the same as the rest, but this changed when I had a brilliant experience with their sunscreen, which I am still using and will be for a while to come. *What La Roche Posay say about Effacalr M?* Upon contact with skin Effacalr M neutralises shine at the source for a long lasting mattifying effect. Effacalr M is recommended for oily skins with imperfections. Skin is left smooth and matt while being moisturised. Day after day pores grow tighter and skins balance is restored. It is a good make up base and is non-comedogenic. *How the product works* Day after day of using the product means it can slow the production of sebum thanks to the combination of exclusive ingredients such as Sebum Targeting Technology, which targets and unclogs blocked sebum. Zinc Pidolate neutralises shine upon contact with the skins surface. With ingredient such as Salicylic Acid you know this product is also going to help you with clogged pores and breakouts deep within the epidermis. *Packaging* Effacalr M comes packaged in a white cardboard box that looks clinical. La Roche Posay have managed to squeeze a lot of information on one little box including about the product in different languages and ingredient list. You are also informed of the product expiry is 12 months of opening and the box is recyclable. Inside the box comes complete with an instruction leaflet that tells you more about La Roche Posay the Effacalr range, which I found interesting. The product itself comes in a 40ml opaque pump dispenser bottle that looks like the box in design. The bottle is shiny white plastic with a pull off frost lid that you can see through. The front tells you about the product with a simple blue rectangle design at the top. The back of the bottle tells you how to apply this product in different languages. *Scent and appearance of product* Pumping out a small amount of the milky white product with a gel texture to the back of my hand, I find it has a very slight scent that I would say would be okay for sensitive skin types as the scent is not apparent. Spreading it over my hand is very easy and just glides on with no effort at all; almost straight away the product sinks into my skin and leaves my hand looking very matte. No residue is left behind and my hand is not left feeling uncomfortable. *How do you apply this product?* You can apply this product either in the morning and or evening to the entire face or where you are most oily. Personally I apply this product in the morning before applying my SPF product. The reason why I apply it before is my SPF won't fully be protecting me as the mattifying gel is blocking the SPF from working. *How did it react to my skin when worn alone?* When Effacalr M is worn alone on cleansed, dry skin it is the most fantastic product I have come across, once applied you can see it instantly mattifying the skin and more so once sunk in. Make up application is easy and glides on smoothly. I find Effacalr M has a good balance between mattifying and moisturising, meaning it mattifies the skin enough but doesn't leave you dry looking. I feel as if my skin is able to breath with this product unlike other mattifying lotions. When worn alone this product is able to keep my skin looking matte for up to four plus hours without the need for blotting or touch ups. *How did it react to my skin with an SPF (or moisturiser)?* I apply half to one pump depending on how much I feel I need of Effacalr M on my T-Zone and out to my cheeks before my SPF. I can see it has filled my pores a little like a primer so they are less noticeable and ready to be greeted with my SPF. I always wait at least one minute before I apply my SPF just to make sure it has had adequate time to sink in. Applying my SPF normally means I am slightly more shiny than normal even though it is very light SPF, but with Effacalr M underneath I now look like I have healthy skin and not one you can fry an egg on. I don't look absolutely matte like I thought I would and what I would like but the shine has been controlled considerably and my skin looks glowing with health, not shine. I find when I have applied make up and applied a little powder I am good to go for a few hours but after this I do need to either blot again or apply some more oil absorbing powder so it is a little disappointing on this front. If you are going to wear a rich moisturiser on top I would say save your money as Effacalr M won't be for you. *Price and availability* You can purchase this fabulous product all at 40mls from lloydspharmacy.com for £13.79, echemist.co.uk for £12.15, and other website prices may vary. *What I think about it/do I like it?* I do like this product but I find I like it a lot more when worn alone, which defeats the object for me as I want to apply it in the morning but I don't want to scrimp of my SPF as Effacalr M offers me no SPF protection at all. Although when SPF or a light moisturiser over the top means my skin isn't mattified completely, I personally feel I am also left healthy looking with a lovely glow to me than if I was matte that my skin looks flat, dull and dry looking. I have not encountered any break outs nor has it ever irritated my skin, I like how it doesn't feel like another layer of product has been applied to the skin, my pores look a little smaller when this product is applied and make up goes on beautifully. La Roche Posay say after time is helps to reduce production of sebum and I kind of agree with them, at first you won't notice a difference in sebum production but over time your skin may look less shiny as products all work different on everyone. I haven't noticed a difference in pore size either. I have also found when used regular this product helps with blemishes due to Salicylic Acid. *Would I purchase again?* Yes I would, I like how it makes my skin look and feel without drying my skin out. Personally for me I have found Effacalr M to be a great product that does what it says on the tin but more so if worn alone. A 40ml bottle lasts me at least three plus months.
