I recently found myself with £20 of John Lewis vouchers off a very lovely friend and so I popped to the shop to get something that I wouldn't normally splash out on... Because it doesn't count if you're using vouchers!! Anyone who reads my reviews on here will know how much I love my make up and although I already have plenty of similar products, I couldn't leave the store without buying the Laura Mercier Shimmer Block.
What does the product do?
The product has been designed to give the face and body a sun kissed glow. Each pot contains four different shades which contain light reflecting particles to brighten and highlight the skin. The product highlights the cheek, brow and collar bones while the colour gives you a healthy glow.
The product is available in a few different pots and each one comes with four different colours. I bought Golden Tourmaline which has creamy, golden, light brown and dark brown shades. They each come with similar names such as Pink Tourmaline, Scarlett Mosaic and Pink Mosaic. The shades range between golds, browns and pinks so you can choose which colours better suit your skin.
How do you use the product?
You can wear the product alone or over the top of your make up, depending on your usual routine. You can use the colours altogether by swirling a make up brush over the top of the powder and then applying it to the face in order to achieve a sun kissed appearance. You can also use the colours separately to highlight different areas of the face and I use my finger for this. I have also used the dark brown shade as an eye shadow so it is a very versatile product.
Packaging and Price
The product comes contained within a sturdy compact which clips open and shut. The compact is square in shape and the powders are arranged in quarters to form another square. The compact is strong and would prevent the product from crumbling in my handbag and you can tell the product is expensive and of high quality. The product costs around £30 which is expensive but the product should last for years. The powders are available from department stores such as Boots and John Lewis, and from a variety of online websites.
Application and Performance
You can tell this product is of a high quality as soon as you use it. Because the powders are baked, they are packed tightly in the compact so you don't get a lot of loose powder flying about as you sweep your brush across the powders. The colour gives a nice sun kissed glow to the skin which isn't shimmering or glittery, and it looks nice and natural. The creamy shade is an absolutely gorgeous highlighter and it is perfect for the brow bones. It has a pearly finish that has an ethereal look and I love it a lot!. The browns work well as eye shadows and it has a metallic shimmer to it without being shimmery. When you mix the gold and the cream, it work well as a highlighter on the brow bones and it makes my make up look beautiful and my skin look healthy.
The product hasn't caused me to develop any blemishes or irritations. It is long lasting and will stay be in place when I get home. It is easily removed using my usual make up remover. I think this product is perfect for an evening out and it makes you look really pretty and like you've had your make up done by a professional. I wouldn't wear this to work as it makes me look too made up but I would wear it in the day if I was out with my friends. The product is simple to use and you use such a tiny amount with each application that I anticipate that it will last me well over a year.
All in all, this is a lovely bronzer/highlighter which is versatile and has long lasting results. It can be used in so many different ways that you can also complete all of your make up using just this compact. It's easy to use and although it's expensive, it is the best product of this type that I have ever used.
It's not something I wear everyday when I'm just popping to the shops or the like but when I go out or on a special occasion I like to add some shimmer to my make up. Shimmer adds a bit of sparkle to my look without being over the top like glitter can be and it also makes my skin and complexion look really nice and even and gives me a bit of a warm glow. So, all in all a really nice look.
One of the best shimmers I own is from Laura Mercier cosmetics. I came across Laura Mercier quite a few years ago when my friend used her make up for her wedding day and I was lucky enough to use it too as I was one of her bridesmaids. Laura Mercier is actually a French make up artist who lent her name to a range of cosmetics.
Her shimmer bloc is described as, "a unique baked formula that applies effortlessly while brightening the eyes, cheeks and body with a hint of natural colour and light."
It comes in a really nice black compact and is in a thick chunky square shape. It comes in four different shades, golden mosaic, mosaic, peach mosaic and pink mosaic. I have it in golden mosaic as I like my skimmer to give me a sun kissed look when I apply it and this one really does. The shimmer bloc is made up of four different colours. In this compact there is a gold colour, a brown colour, a cream colour and a light brown colour. Each is a really nice shade and has some shimmer in it. You can use each individually but the best way to use this shimmer bloc is to take a big thick brush and rub it all over the compact so you really get the colour pigment to mix on your brush and then you get a bit of each colour when you brush it across your face and skin. In this way I think you get a colour that really moves and adds some depth to your face rather than just one colour as you would with just a cheek powder say.
The colours are really well packed in the compact and I think this is due to the baked formula which keeps them packed together tightly and will only come off on your burst which is nice. I have had this compact for quite a few months now and the colours have not broken up or rubbed into each other which is nice. The powder goes on really well and holds onto my face and I find really stays for the whole day.
I apply it mainly to my cheeks, a little bit to my nose to give it a bit of shading and a bit to my forehead as well. If I am wearing a low cut top I also apply it to my chest area to give that a bit of definition as well. The shimmer bloc is not cheap, I bought mine for around £17 but its not something I use everyday and as I see it more as an investment piece of make up I don't mind paying for something that will last quite a long while.
