Lavera Faces Organic Calendula Exfoliant Wash
Advantages: Organic and natural, not tested on animals, gentle
Disadvantages: Too little exfoliating particles, smell if you are not keen on citrusy fragrances
I found this product while browsing Feelunique website. Lavera is a brand I hadn't heard of before but I was quite intrigued and thought that a 30ml tube would be just the right amount to start with.
---- Lavera and Laverana ----
Lavera is a brand of natural cosmetics produced by a company called Laverana, which was founded 23 years ago in Germany. Lavera cosmetics are made of raw plant ingredients, where possible from certified organic agriculture, 100% natural perfume, colourants and preservatives. In addition, Laverana claim that none of their products (or ingredients) are tested on animals. They are in fact only tested on volunteers (people, if you're wondering), including those suffering with skin conditions such as Neurodermatitis. Most of Laverana cosmetics are suitable for vegetarians (except for a few lipsticks listed on their website) and only a few less are suitable for vegans.
---- Lavera Faces Organic Calendula Exfoliant Wash ----
This particular product contains calendula flower extract and is aimed at normal and combination skin types. It is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.
There are, however, specific products for dry, oily and sensitive skin as well.
---- Packaging ----
From what I can see online, the only tube size for this exfoliant is 30 ml and it did look very small when I first opened the box. However, after having used this product for three months now I can say the size is perfectly suitable and I have only used about half of the contents. An added advantage to this size is that you can easily put it in your make up bag and take with you for holidays, short trips, sleepovers, etc. It's also a great size for those going through the airport security - with the current restriction of liquids in your hand luggage to 100ml, it will still leave you enough capacity for other essentials.
The tube comes in a box with a leaflet inside. However, I am quite disappointed with the leaflet: it lists all the products in the Lavera skin care range divided into three groups as per the steps you should take in the daily skin care routine. The exfoliant wash is listed in Step 1, together with face wash, which would suggest that you can use it everyday. There are no instructions on how or how often this should be used (how to use is only written on the website). Without being too sure on the usage frequency, I decided to apply the product no more than 2-3 times a week.
---- Ingredients and smell ----
There are a lot of ingredients listed on the website and packaging, but the list is too long to quote here (full list at the end of the review). Let me just mention a few of them: calendula flower extract, shea butter, almond oil, grapefruit peel extract, witch hazel water. Although several ingredients were used to produce this product, the only smell I can identify is mandarine (yes, I know this is not listed as an ingredient but this is what I can smell), which I am not that keen on and wasn't really expecting it in the first place. By saying that, I don't mean this is an unpleasant smell but I personally don't like my cosmetics citrusy, that's all.
---- Consistency and feel ----
The exfoliant wash has a creamy consistency with tiny particles, which I assume are ground apricot/peach stones. The cream is pleasant to use, the particles are tiny and will get into pores easily to provide deep clean. The product doesn't feel harsh on the skin at all. The only slightly negative thing for me personally is that there aren't enough of the beads inside the cream. Especially when your face is wet, any product applied to it seems more runny than it would be otherwise. I prefer my scrub to be loaded with beads, so I can feel them under my fingers doing their job when I massage a scrub over my face.
---- My opinion ----
I have been using this scrub for 3 months quite regularly (twice per week) and noticed that my face looks slightly better. The product is removing dead cells efficiently without drying the skin. I guess this is because it is a cream scrub it moisturizes the skin at the same time as it exfoliates. It is gentle and I haven't experienced any irritation on my skin.
Although the name suggests that this is a wash, I don't think it is suitable. I tried using this as a face wash, but my skin just didn't feel clean enough. I suggest using a face wash first then follow with this exfoliator. The skin will be clean and moisturized.
Overall, this is an ok exfoliator. It does what it is supposed to do, but hasn't wowed me and I think other brands do a similar job and are cheaper (I paid £6 for a 30ml tube). I haven't decided yet if I'm going to re-purchase.
If you are vegetarian, vegan or just prefer natural ingredients in your cosmetics, then I guess this product is for you. Otherwise, why not give it a go and decide for yourself?
---- Stockists ----
None of the department stores or well known pharmacies stock this product. I bought mine online from Feelunique.com but there are plenty of small retailers around the UK and online that stock Laverana products. For a full list with maps and addresses, go to their website:
