Lush Breath of Fresh Air
Advantages: Freshens and tones face with naturalingredients
Disadvantages: Does has methylparabens in it
I was lucky enough to take part in a wonderful promotion that Lush did with Clipper tea and I made my own fresh face mask then had a luxurious facial using Lush products and finally came home with sampke pots of all the products they used on my during the facial.
During the facial they used a toner. Lush make three toners, 'Eau Roma', 'Breathe of fresh Air' and' a third with tea tree that I can't remember the name of right now. I had previously had a sample of Eau Roma' and have since bought my own bottle so I fancied trying one of the other ones. They suggested that maybe I didn't need the tea tree one and that 'Breath of Fresh Air' would be suitable for my skin.
'Breath of fresh Air' like Eau Roma is a gentle toner for dry to normal skin. The main beneficial ingredients are sea water and aloe vera gel as well as rose absolute and sea weed absolute all of which tone your skin gently. I was recommended this as I am of a certain mature age and this is particularly good on dry, older or sensitive skin. So I was advised to use 'full of grace serum block first then the face pack then rinse it off and wipe my face with this toner before applying whichever face cream I fancied. If I had makeup on I would have had to remove that prior to all the other things.
I was advised to use their makeup remover and was given samples of ultra bland and 9 to 5 to try as well as this toner. I did very well on this visit as I bought one product 'Full of Grace ' serum and then had a facial and came out loaded with goodies!
Back to the toner. I am used to toners that really feel like they are doing something fairly drastic to my skin. To quote another reviewer ( tallulahbang/joker) 'toner is hurty stuff that stings like hell' but Tallulah/joker you should try this as it really doesn't sting. Now, being of the generation that was brought up with 'If it hurts it's doing you good' maxim I wondered if this was actually toning my skin. Looking at the tissue/cotton wool after using it didn't seem to really show that the top layer of my skin had been stripped off but according to Lush it is good for removing impurities on the surface of your skin. Maybe the impurities are too small to see.
I did find that it removed the make up remover nicely leaving my skin feeling smooth and non greasy . it also worked well at removing the last remnants of the facepack after I had washed off most of it with warm water. The toner does close your pores after using warm water too. I have also used it during the day at home if my skin is feeling a bit tired looking and it made me feel fresh and awakened which was just what I needed.
This toner comes in a small black plastic bottle with a spray nozzle for easy application. On the front there is white writing explaining what the product is and there is a Lush logo at the top of the label. On the back there is the little sticky a label with a picture of the person who made it on a green background. It shows the date it was made and the use by date. There is also a use by date but I am afraid I am not hugely bothered by these as I am not eating the product but I do suspect that the freshness of the ingredients starts to wear off and the product probably becomes less efficient. The little pot is quite a sturdy one and provided the lid is kept over the pump then it will probably be okay for packing and using when travelling. I did find that the pressure in the plane made my foot cream pot leak over other things so be aware.
The fact that it is plastic does mean that it will survive the odd dropping on the bathroom tiled floor without disastrous effects. The plastic keeps it fresh and the pump means that only what you need is dispensed and there is no wastage. I am not sure whether these little squirty pots are taken back for recycling like the bid pots and the stick perfume containers, I will have to ask next visit.
Now to the ingredients:
Spring water, fresh seawater, aloe vea gel, carrageen extract ( sea weed) rose absolute, patchouli oil, rosemary oil, seaweed absolute and the Perfume and Methylparaben.
Now in my view the date is probably not so important as methylparaben is a preservative and anti fungal agent. There is apparently no evidence to say they are harmful to humans in beauty products. Apparently many fruits especially blueberries produce these naturally so it doesn't seem to be too offensive. Rose absoluter has been used by women for face treatments for over 2000 years because it's well known for softening and cooling the skin while the aloe vera gel is perfect for any soreness on your face. The ingredients are simple and the product works effectively in my humble opinion.
Now this stuff looks clear like water and you spray it onto cotton wool to remove excess cleanser or to refresh skin. It smells very subtly and pleasantly of exactly what it is called 'Fresh Air'. I really can't believe how perfectly the name describes the smell. It also smells slightly of tea tree or something slightly medicinal like a new plaster sort of smell but only slightly. I can't smell patchouli or rose in it at all.. It is not a strong smell at all which I think is good as you don't really want it smelling strongly in a toner. I have only used this on cotton wool as I only have a sample in a small black pot but if I had the spray I would be very tempted to spray it straight onto my face (eyes and mouth firmly closed) . I do spray my Evian water onto my face when travelling and find it really gives me a lift and helps with dehydration on the plane. I think this would be excellent for this too.
Eau Roma Water costs £6.75 pounds for 250g and £3.7 for 100g or £7.00 for 250g but I think when I buy it I will go for the small bottle as it fits nicely in my bag and is not too heavy.I have found that in my local Lush shop they have such helpful assistants who are great at helping me find the best product for my skin and have had a number of samples to take home to try, this being one and it is one I will be going back to buy as it works in a lovely gentle way.
Because these are so gentle they are more than a toner. You can use them to spritz your face when feeling tired or hot. I took my 'Eau Roma' on the plane on my last trip and spritzed my face when I woke up after a few hours of travel and I did find it made my skin feel less drawn and dehydrated.
With this toner the lovely blend of sea water does the job of softening and hydrating the skin and then the carrageen seaweed and aloe gel help to lock in this moisture so your skin is protected from dehydration. The lovely people at Lush also told me it is really good at taking the heat out of sunburned skin at the same time it puts back some moisture into your poor burned skin.
Lush say this about their toners:
"Our toner water range is an attempt to deliver good quality essential oils to your face in the correct concentration. They are not just toners, but are aromatherapy in dilution, ready to be used at a moment's notice."
So thank you once again Lush for the sample and I will be coming back for this one. This is a lovely gentle product that works for me and my mature tired sensitive skin. I have been using my samples, I got two on different occasions, for about three weeks now and have had no unpleasant reaction and my face feels really awakened when I have used it.
