Advantages: Ease of use.
Disadvantages: It is a bit messy.
For anyone who has read my other reviews you will already know I am an ardent Lush fan. I have always suffered from problem skin be it spots on my face, allergies to chemicals in washes, wipes and creams, you name it it has happened to me over the years. As such I am always on the lookout for the "perfect" product. I recently found out that Lush will give you free trials of products and as such I have been working through around a quarter of the shops products and so far found some exceptional products that have become staples of my beauty routine, this product is one of them.
Coalface is marketed as a cleaner, however it is one of Lush's products that is suitable for several uses.
This product looks like a jet black bar of soap, the full sized bar in store looks like a large black flower, which I think is a shame they have not added a little colour to the centre of the flower to just make it look a little bit more like the mould design. The product can be cut down to any size you require, the smallest amount being 100g.
As with all Lush products the names have been designed around the product, this is one of the easiest to see why it acquired it's namesake. The product is made with coal, is jet black and when you use the product the coal actually turns your skin black. It is also primarily a facial cleaner soap. Coalface can be used as a body soap as well as a facial cleaner.
Coalface is a facial cleaner that has been designed for oily/combination skin, Lush states that the main ingredients for this product are liquorice for softening the skin and charcoal, which absorbs grease and gently exfoliates the skin.
The product is very simple to use, you simply dampen your hands and the bar of soap and work up a small lather in your hands then gently massage into your skin. There are some small particles in the soap that transfer to you hands and skin when you lather up, in turn these give a very gentle exfoliation to the skin as you massage.
I really love this soap, it has a lovely lather to it and my pores are definitely benefiting from the gentle exfoliation. I have seen a lot of improvement in my skin since I started using it, particularly on my chin, forehead and nose.
The only issue I have with the soap is that black can drip off my hands when lathering up the soap and drip onto out sink which is white. It does mean that I have to wipe down the sink every time I use it but this does not take long and it does not stain.
I have also used the soap on my arms which now and again get a few spots on them and it has worked well there as well. There is not much of a scent to the soap but I think really because it is a facial cleaner this is a good thing, to much added perfume could cause irritation.
£4.70 for 100g
£11.75 for 200g
£23.50 for 500g
Although sizes are not cut perfectly, it is a little like the cheese counter you get a few grams either side so the price is just a guide.
They are cut to size requested, a minimum of 100 grams.

I have been using this particular product for 3 weeks now and have seen a really big improvement in my skin. For the first few days it did feel a little dry, however it seems to have levelled out and is now fine. This product is not hydrating so does need following up immediately with a moisturiser, however I do think the coal is helping my face remain matified a little during the day.
I would have no issues recommending this product, although there are a few nasties in the ingredients I have had no issues with this product and my skin is sensitive. However I would advise anyone with overly sensitive skin to trial with a little caution.
I would not hesitate in giving this product 5 stars.
Summary: Very good cleaner for oily skin.
