Lush Cosmetic Warrior Face Mask
I think I have now tried all of the fresh face mask s made by Lush currently except for this one. I have never bought it before because it is created with ingredients designed to combat spots and deal with greasy spot prone skin. At my age I am well passed this problem although I do get the occasional spot even now. Despite getting the odd spot I have always thought that other face masks would be more appropriate for my skin and have not picked this one up.
My daughter has been staying with us this week and so we went into Lush to choose a face mask each. I had previously picked up the 'Cupcake' one for her which she left behind and I did use a few times. There was still half a tub left so she thought she would try a different one. The lovely young lady in Lush suggested this which has garlic as one of its main ingredients. We were not too sure as garlic isn't really something you want to smell of but we sniffed it and the garlic was not pungently obvious so she picked it up as her choice.
LUSH FRESH FACE MASKS
In the shop the various facemasks are in big stainless steel bowls on ice and presented with fresh items that are in the actual facemask as garnish; so this one usually has some garlic cloves on it as garnish. The face packs are made fresh and sent to each shop weekly from the factory in Dorset .
As these are made with fresh ingredients they have a limited life and must be stored in the fridge. I have once had two face packs as I was given one in the shop and because we were just about to go on holiday I stuck it in the freezer. We were away about four weeks and when I returned I retrieved my face pack and it was absolutely fine, it lasted another six weeks in the fridge and smelled great and I used it once a week for the six weeks. So don't worry too much about the keeping aspect as they do last a fair time if kept in the fridge and used with clean fingers or a spoon to get the stuff out.
One of the best parts about these face masks is that you can get them FREE providing you bring back five clean empty Lush black pots or their solid perfume cases. I think this is such a wonderful way to encourage recycling as everyone benefits.
The face masks all come in a small back recyclable pot and you get 75g in the pot. The cost if you buy it is £5.95 which is quite expensive but I don't think I have bought one for quite a while as I have had free ones through bringing back my black pots. Also you get at least six uses from each pot so really it is good value in the end.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GARLIC ON MY FACE?
This face mask as I said is aimed at younger skins with a tendency to break outs but in the interests of reviewing I did try it before my daughter took it back to London with her. There is nothing in the face mask that was going to cause my face a problem so I didn't worry about using it at all. It is a really fairly grungy grey- beige and unattractive colour with a clean tea tree smell. The main beneficial ingredients in this one are fresh naturally antiseptic garlic and tea tree essential oil combined with deep cleansing kaolin and antibacterial honey all intended to cleanse the skin and help dry out any spots. The Kaolin does help to absorb grease and give a deep cleanse. So it can actually be used by anyone as it is not a harsh astringent type de greaser at all.
WHAT IS IT LIKE?
The actual face mask is very thick rather like a paste, thick oatmeal not porridge more like ground oatmeal or baby food in looks. It is not at all runny. In fact if you have had it for a while it can become a little thicker and drier so I find as I am spreading it on my face I add a bit of water to smooth it on more easily. I found when I used this as it was very fresh it smoothed on easily with no added water.
The smell is not the best but it is not offensive at all as the predominant smell is tea tree. The garlic isn't obvious at all really. I can't say I'd like a bath product or scented candle smelling of this but it is clean and sort of medicinal smelling and in no way unpleasant.
It feels smooth with no slight gritty texture that I find in some of the fresh face masks so this is not exfoliating at all.
I have been taught by the Lush team exactly how to use my fresh face masks as I had a special face mask making facial in their shop, in fact I went twice it was so good.
Firstly you need to cleanse your face using whatever cleanser suits your face type. I like'9 to 5 from Lush but what ever you normally use will do.
The next stage is one I was advised to add by the girl in the Lush shop one day and that is to give my face a feed with a serum and the one I use is a great little bar of serum called 'Full of Grace'. This ensures that your face doesn't get too dried out and feeds it while you are having the facemask. Now if you are a younger person using this mask to clean up a greasy skin I'd leave this bit out.
Then open the pot of facemask and spread it all over your face except around the eyes. As I said I find sometimes the face mask can become a bit thick when it has been kept a while so I help it by wetting my hands to smooth it on.
According to Lush you shouldn't let it go completely dry and crusty before washing it off but I leave mine until dry as I usually get in the bath and lie there. If it does get dry then it doesn't matter as I can use lots of water to gently wash it off.
I then get out of the bath and dry myself patting my face dry before I reach for the toner to close those pores and then of course moisturise as for night or day depending on when you use it.
WHATDOES IT FEEL LIKE?
Because the mask is kept in the fridge it always feels refreshing and cold as I apply the mask and I don't paste it on very thickly as there is no need. As I apply this the smell is quite clinical and I only put this one on my T zone which does have a tendency to slight greasiness. I spread it fairly thinly as I don't feel it needs to be caked on in order to do its job. I left mine on for about five minutes.
As I lay in the bath I could smell the tea tree and the clean rather medicinal aroma but nothing nasty at all. I could also feel the cooling of the facemask as it had come from the fridge as it started todry a bit on my face. I love this part as really relax and lie back and feel it is doing its job of deep cleansing my T zone. I gently wash the mask off while in the bath and then I do have to clean the bath afterwards but it doesn't go all down my neck as it would doing over a sink. I found my skin felt very clean and quite fresh too. My skin just looks fresher and I feel like I have had a deep clean too. I am past the age when I suffer from spots but I do think that the garlic and tea tree combined with the kaolin helped to clean my pores and they look less big and open.
I know this is not really a face mask aimed at older skin but the lovely girl in Lush said she sometimes uses this on the odd spot and leaves it on overnight as the antibacterial ingredients and the kaolin dry out and clean up the spot without leaving a scab or any nasty redness.
WOULD I RECOMMEND?
Yes I love the fact that this is naturally antibacterial as so often products for spot prone skin are so harsh and actually unbalance the skin's own grease production as it feels it has to make more because of all the drying. My daughter said it made her skin feel fresh and not at al tight and dry so she was very pleased. She liked the smell of the chocolate one better but this made her face feel really nice after using it so she said she will certainly continue to use it alternating it with the chocolate one. I am especially happy as it was free although it does cost £5.95 if you don't have five pots to hand back. This is still quite good value as easily get six uses from this little pot as you don't need to cake it on thickly and it goes on really smoothly.
