Any of you who read my reviews regularly will know that I'm a massive fan of the shop Lush and I've been trying to sample almost every product they make. Last year I made a huge online order and bought several items from the Retro range, which I'm still working my way through. Gumback Express Shower Smoothie was one of these, as I wanted to try a number of banana products!
***What is Lush?***
Lush is a store that makes toiletries and cosmetics, using natural and organic ingredients where possible and minimising packaging where they can. It started out as a mail order company called Cosmetics to Go, but this failed and the new store, Lush, opened in Poole, Dorset. Later branches of the shop opened in London and beyond, and there are now Lush stores all over the world. As well as in store, you can also buy products from the website, www.lush.co.uk. There are similar websites for many different countries including the USA, Japan and Germany.
Lush buy ingredients only from companies that do not test on animals. All of their products are suitable for vegetarians and many are suitable for vegans.
Lush say: "We believe in happy people making happy soap, putting our faces on our products and making our mums proud.
"We believe in long candlelit baths, sharing showers, massage, filling the world with perfume and in the right to make mistakes, lose everything and start again."
***What is Retro?***
The Retro range is only available online or via mail order, as it is made up of products that have been discontinued from stores, but were deemed popular enough not to be discontinued completely. Retro products are often more expensive than the normal range of products, as they are made in smaller quantities, but there is some interesting stuff to be found among the products!
***Gumback Express Shower Smoothie***
This product comes in one of Lush's larger plastic tubs and you get 250g of product inside. As it's Retro, the tub and the label are white rather than the usual black, although my understanding is that you can still use white tubs in the 'take back 5 pots to Lush and get a free fresh face mask' promotion. The label states that the product is an "exfoliating banana and almond shower soap". It is softening, soothing and moisturising and using it is simple - just rub it over your body in the shower and rinse off.
The product is made with a glycerine, almond, apricot, rapeseed and coconut oil base, with ground almond shells for exfoliation and orange blossom honey to soothe skin. It also contains fresh organic bananas to add to the scent and help moisturise skin.
On opening the tub, I wasn't originally very enamoured by what I saw. The product is creamy yellow with little bits in (the ground almond shells) and looked a little bit like sick if I'm completely honest. I could smell the bananas and almonds but the two scents didn't seem to work that well together and I wasn't too impressed.
However I decided to give the product a go. While in the shower, I scooped some out of the tub and rubbed it over my skin. It was exfoliating but not harshly so and I was able to give my skin a good rub. I found that the scrub had the consistency of yoghurt and was slightly runny so that I had to be careful not to let any run away. The soap did lather up really well. It felt reasonably moisturising on my skin, and certainly didn't irritate it in any way.
I did find that because of the product's runny consistency, I had to use more than I might have for another scrub. You do get a big tub, but it is rather expensive at £8.75.
Once in the shower, the scrub's banana and almond scent somehow becomes a lot more palatable and enjoyable. It does linger on skin slightly and I've been using it along with Banana Moon Soap and Sympathy for the Skin Body Lotion, which smell similar.
Overall, this is a really nice scrub but I'm not sure I'd buy it again simply because of the price. Definitely recommended if you like bananas though!
Lush is a company that prides itself on making handmade beauty products that are created using natural ingredients. Their products always smell delicious, have eye catching designs and come with fantastically clever names. They never test their products or the ingredients within in them on animals.
Gumback Express is a shower smoothie from Lush. I am a big Lush fun and this is one of my favourite products from their entire range. It is a moisturising and exfoliating cream to be used in the shower. Its purpose is to leave the skin nourished and smooth.
When you first see this product, it will come as a surprise. It doesn't look very appetising but then this product is not meant to be eaten! When you open the lid of the tub which the product comes in, you will be greeted with a questionably yellow liquid with bits floating around inside the lotion.
The smell will hit you immediately. It is like bananas and cream, and very overpowering. If you don't like the smell of bananas, you'll need a peg on your nose before using this one! The consistency of this smoothie is thinner than the other smoothies in the collection but it's still thick enough to do its job.
How does it work? Gumback Express contains ground Calfornian Almond Shells which perform the exfoliating action. The purpose of an exfolliant is to remove those pesky dead skins cells that rest on your body making it look dull and to reveal the lovely healthy layer underneath. The shells are also nutritious and will leave your skin softer than before.
It also contains Almond and Apricot Oils. Both of these oils are softening and moisturising. Almond Oil in particular is used to treat dry skins and to offer it a deep hydration. It has a softening and nourishing effect on the skin. Apricot oil is great for treating dry and sensitive skin. This oil will revitalise your skin and give it a healthy glow. It also contains Rapeseed Oil and Coconut Oil.
The mashed up fresh and organic bananas in the smoothie makes your skin incredibly soft. The fruit is packed with soothing properties and gives this smoothie its fruity fragrance. Also stirred into the mixture is some honey which is an antioxidant and has been used to treat the skin for over 2000 years. Honey also absorbs impurities meaning your skin will feel fresh and as good as new.
To use the product, you massage a handful of it into your damp skin in a circular motion. It's best to turn the shower off at this point so that the product is not washed away before it done its job. The massaging action also helps to tone the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite.
The smoothie is not exactly cheap costing around £9 for 250 grams. As this smoothie is packed full of natural ingredients, it comes with an expiry date too so you'll need to use it within it a certain time. It's not one of those products that you can keep for special ingredients. I bought mine online, which means I had less time to use it and I don't think it's available in the actual store.
Nevertheless, I would still say it is worth the money. It smells simply scrumptious although unfortunately the smell does not linger on the skin afterwards. The almond shells are hard enough to remove the dead skin but not hard enough to hurt. Your skin feels soft and smooth after use. The natural ingredients are very hydrating for the skin and my whole body feels nourished and clean when I step out of the shower. A lovely product.

Gumback Express is a Lush product I have been wanting to try since I was first introduced to Lush and I have never got round to ordering it online, it is from the Retro section of Lush meaning that it was once a popular product which has now been sent to the Lush product heaven and it is only available online, so with my Husbands birthday pending and my excuse for ordering is that if I am buying something for him, then why not order something for me, I purchased said product.
The reason I had wanted to try Gumback Express is because A) it has a very weird name which could mean anything and B) the Lush description to me made it sound like a product I had to try and that description is as follows "Banana and almond, moisturizing shower smoothie for perfect bodies" and it is the very thought of Bananas and almonds which sold it to me because I am a big fan of both items.
Anyway, my package arrived in a very pongy smelling box, full of goodies for him indoors and for me, well shockingly just the one item, my Gumback Express which I had been wanting to try for almost two years. It retails at £8.70 for a 250g tub, which is expensive I know, but it was a treat for myself. The tub itself is black, exactly like the Lush tubs they sell other products in, like Dream Cream and so on, again it has a pull on and off lid which can be quite tricky to remove with wet hands, so my advice would be to always remove with the lid before getting into the shower.
Inside the tub you will find a chicken korma coloured looking cream which has bits in it, that is the best way to describe it and I was quite disappointed at first because I had expected the cream to be a bright yellow colour as opposed to something that resembled mashed up gone off bananas, when in reality that is basically what the product is. Anyway the colour might not be as vibrant as I had hoped but the smell was delicious, the banana being very evident with the almond smell also quite pungent and together for me they are a great mix and something I really liked the smell of and you wont be surprised to note that it is packed full of essential oils and other lovely gubbins to make you smell all nice and Lush.
So the ingredients list is about as long as my arm, it is packed full of stuff and the main ingredients for me are Fresh Organic Bananas which are full of Vitamin C and E and naturally good for the skin by helping to keep it moisturised and soft. Next is Ground Almond Shells which act as the exfoliant in this product and Almond shells are used because they are great at creating gentle exfoliating actions which are not too harsh on the skin but still effective enough to remove dead skin cells and surface dirt which can leave your skin looking dull and without a natural glow. Apricot kernel oil follows in and these are rich in Vitamin A which helps remove dirt and grime from your skin whilst also helping to soften and moisturise it. Almond oil works with the rapeseed and coconut oil and all three is are high vitamin E content which leaves a silky feel to the skin so when you touch your skin it instantly feels soft and smooth. Orange Blossom Honey and Labdanum Resinoid are the next ingredients and they contain antibacterial, antiseptic, antioxidant and anti-fungal substances making them really good at locking in moisture to the skin and leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth after helping the other ingredients rid the skin of grime, dirt and dead skin cells.
So with all of that packed in goodness I tried it. The best place to use this shower smoothie is in the shower rather than the bath and once the lid has been removed (with dry hand remember) you simply scoop your hand into the pot (if like mine they are small enough) and then step back from the shower stream of water and massage the smoothie all over your body as you would do any other shower gel, shower cream etc... and then as you massage it onto your skin you should be able to feel the slight scratching of the skin, which isn't unpleasant, of the ground almond shells as they remove the dead skin cells and dirt from you body. I used this on my entire body, except my face which I have a plethora of products for anyway and as you are using it in the shower the smell it omits is just brilliant and it does smell like you have just covered yourself in bananas. With the exfoliation, if you decide that you have some tough dry skin which needs to be removed you can press a little harder with this smoothie and you should feel the slight difference on the surface of your skin. Thankfully the almond shells are ground down enough that they don't actually leave your skin looked scratched or red from using this product.
After using this product and patting my skin dry I was really delighted with the effects, my skin was soft and smooth to the touch. The Banana and Almond fragrances are the two which are left on the skin and they remained slightly noticeable throughout the whole day but did eventually wear off, for those people not liking the smell of Banana then you would not be impressed with this product because it is ultimately the fragrance which lingers throughout your home as well and for me, well I love the smell.
I have now had this tub for 6 weeks and I am half way through but then I do use it every time I get into the shower which is pretty much every morning before work and then at the weekend too if I don't have a bath. I haven't used this product in the bath because I don't think it would be as easy to use, instead I use a Lush Bath Ballistic.
So I do recommend this product from Retro Lush? Yes because I absolutely love it and only wished I had tried it much sooner. Why do I like it? Well it is fun to use, it smells absolutely divine and it is really easy to use and not to mention it does soften and smooth the skin by relieving it of dead skin cells. Further information on other ingredients and this product can be found on the Lush website and from there you click on Retro and it takes you to Lush heaven where you will find many other Lush products.
