Advantages: smells nice, skin feels soft and smooth, skin is clear
Disadvantages: almond shells are quite scratchy
I am a huge fan of Lush and have used their range of fresh face masks for a number of years now. I like the fact that these masks use everyday ingredients without any hard to pronounce chemicals and without any preservatives or parabens. I have always been wary of the chemicals we put on our skin through cosmetics and creams and try to use products that are as 'natural' as possible. There are several masks in the fresh masks range and thought that I had reviewed them all on here. I was therefore surprised to find that there was one that I had missed! The shock! As soon as I realised I put on some mask (I think it's best to write reviews like this in 'real time'), whipped open my laptop and started writing away!
So as I write I have a thin layer of Love Lettuce mask covering the skin on my face. I applied this to the skin after rinsing it with warm water. I find this helps the mask sit better on the skin and I think it will also work more effectively if it applied to clean skin. Like all Lush fresh face masks the Love Lettuce comes packaged in a small black pot, containing 75g of product. Each pot retails for £5.95 and I find that I can get 8 or 9 uses per pot so whilst it is a little more expensive than other face masks I do believe it is still good value for money. Lush also have an ongoing offer where if you bring back 5 empty pots of lush products you receive a free fresh mask - definitely worth it in my opinion as you can save money and do your bit for the environment!
The mask itself has been designed for normal to oily skin and acts as an exfoliater to give skin a radiant glow. The mask is dark green in colour and is speckled with dark brown/black coloured almond shells, which act as an exfoliant to sluice off dead skin cells. It also contains softening almond oil, soothing lavender oil, which acts to balance the skins natural oil production, and Fullers Earth, which acts to tighten the skin, as well as honey and ground almonds. Not a lettuce leaf in sight! Like all fresh face masks this has to be kept in the fridge to prevent it from spoiling. In the summer months this makes the mask really refreshing to use as it is so cold, however in the winter months I tend to take this out of the fridge around 20 minutes before using to allow it to warm up a little.
To use I apply a thin layer onto skin that has already been washed and leave it to work for 10 minutes. As I applied this I was surprised by just how gritty this mask was! During the 10 minutes the mask starts to dry and my skin starts to feel quite tight, although not uncomfortable. The mask also has quite a pleasant smell. Given that it has lavender in it I was expecting it to be quite overpowering but the mask overall has more of a sweet smell. I can definitely smell the lavender, but it is really quite subtle. The lavender is quite relaxing as it is drying, but you can definitely smell the sweetness of the almond oil and honey that have been added. After about 10 minutes the mask is completely dry, although it does not flake off, which is a good thing as it does not make a mess!
At this point I leave my laptop and head to the bathroom where I rinse the mask off with warm water, rubbing in circular motions as I do so. The mask comes off easily and as I rub I can feel the almond shells scrubbing my skin clean. These are actually surprisingly quite scratchy and I always rub gently to avoid scratching my skin. Even so they do feel quite sharp and I was a little concerned about this causing redness or blotchiness.
Once rinsed off my skin feels amazing! It is smooth and very soft. It also looks very clear, so it does a good job of getting rid of any dirt and grime that may have accumulated. I'd definitely recommend it for people who live and work in a city! Despite the scratchiness of the almond shells there are no marks or redness on my skin either. Overall I am really quite impressed with this face mask from Lush and it has even become a favourite with my Mum. I therefore give it 4 stars, with the one star coming off due to its scratchiness.
Summary: Another great mask from Lush!
