“ Brand: Lush / Type: Facial Serum / Suitable for: Face / Skin type: for dry skin and for all types „
One of my favourite stores, Lush, released several new products this year and I was able to try several of them. One such product was Saving Face. This product, along with its sister product Full of Grace, is a facial serum. Serums seem to be in vogue at the moment, they're in all the beauty magazines and are meant to do wonders for your skin. I must admit they didn't seem to me to be an essential buy - I was quite happy with my moisturiser, and thought a serum would be a bit of an unnecessary extra. However, I read a lot of glowing reviews about this particular serum, and decided to purchase it from Lush one day. Saving Face is designed for combination and oily skin. The other serum, Full of Grace, is meant for dry and sensitive skin. A year or so ago I would have assumed I would need the product for sensitive skin, as my skin is particularly sensitive, however I have never had a problem using any Lush product on my face so was able to choose the right product for my combination skin without worrying. I was proved right in my decision and haven't experienced any irritation whatsoever: the product is very gentle, so you should choose between the two serums solely on the basis of whether your skin tends to be oily or dry. Saving Face is a small oval bar, smaller than a massage bar but along the same lines (and it fits nicely into a massage bar tin if you have one lying around). It is a pale green in colour, whereas the other serum bar is pink. Saving Face is designed to balance your skin's sebum production, and contains citrus essential oils which give the bar it's delicate citrus scent. Thyme infusion helps alleviate skin problems, while grapefruit and lime oils tone and refresh your face. Illipe and shea butters help to moisturise the skin. The product is suitable for vegans. There are a couple of ways to use the serum bar. One involves applying it at night, instead of or in addition to your normal moisturiser. After cleansing and toning your face, melt the bar between your fingers and apply it to the face. This can sometimes be tricky if my hands are cold, so I occasionally hold the bar to the radiator to warm it a little. Once I've massaged the serum bar onto my face, it does look and feel quite greasy and my face is quite shiny, although the shine lessens after a couple of hours. I always use the bar instead of a moisturiser - I think an extra moisturiser would be too much, and the bar moisturises my face quite enough for my needs. The very next day after using this bar for the first time, I noticed a difference in my skin. I've been having a bit of trouble with it lately, as in the cold weather it is drying out a bit, going slightly red, and if I use too much moisturiser I get more spots. However, I noticed that my skin looked brighter and more even toned. After a couple of weeks of using this product, I could notice a huge difference in my skin. It looked glowing, I had practically no spots and dry patches, and the blackheads on my nose and chin had improved. I had worried that the serum would clog up my pores and make my skin worse, particularly as it seemed to make my skin shiny. However this hasn't been the case at all! As the serum ingredients are concentrated, using the product will enhance any others you might use and it is suggested that you use a serum under a face mask to enhance the effect. I tried this last week with a face mask from Lush. Now, I find Lush fresh face masks to be fantastic anyway, and I hadn't tried this particular face mask before (The Sacred Truth, if anyone's interested), but I did notice that my skin looked practically flawless after using the two products together, so it clearly didn't do me any harm! I absolutely love this product, and though I thought it would be rather an unnecessary one before I bought it, I am so impressed that I will certainly repurchase. The bar costs £7.50, which seems a lot but it does last for a while - I've used about half of mine and that's with using it every day for a few weeks. I might use it less often in the summer, but I will probably use it every day in the winter because it's doing my skin a lot of good in this awful cold weather. I saw on the Lush website that some users have complained that the serum bar goes mouldy after a while, but I haven't had this problem, possibly because I keep it in a tin. In case you haven't realised, I completely recommend this product, but if you're going to buy it I suggest waiting until after Christmas, when Lush will undoubtedly have some amazing sale on where you get loads of freebies for spending over a certain amount!
Looking back through my latest reviews it seems that I've spent rather a lot in Lush this month! I blame the fact that I received their latest brochure in the post last month, which had so many new, and exciting goodies that I just had to try! One of the things that I spotted was their new range of facial serums. These come in two flavours and contain nourishing butters, potent essential oils and other amazing fresh ingredients. I didn't really know much about serums and how they differ from normal moisturisers so I did a bit of research! I learnt that serums are designed to penetrate the skin to a deeper level than moisturisers, flooding it with nutrients, giving the skin an intense boost. Used regularly these can improve the effectiveness of any moisturiser you use. This really appealed to me so I decided next time I visited Lush I would investigate further. On my next trip I kept an eye out for the serum. I couldn't spot it so asked one of the friendly assistants for help. He showed me where it was and asked if I'd like to have a try. (Of course I did!) As there are two different varieties for different skin types he asked what kind of skin I had. As I am lucky enough not to have any major skin complaints he recommended the 'Full of Grace' bar. He explained how this contained a mix of tropical butters to moisturise skin and contains vitamins and antioxidants (from Portobello mushrooms of all things!) to feed the skin. The bar is suitable for those with sensitive skin and contains rose oil to calm irritated skin and help with redness. As I don't have any of these problems I wasn't sure this was for me, but the assistant proceeded to say that this was great for normal to dry skin too. As he handed me the brown coloured bar (not orange as in the picture in the brochure) I took a sniff and wasn't too impressed. Not surprisingly this had a damp, mushroomy scent, but with a hint of sweetness. As I applied a little to my skin (on my hand) I noticed that once on it didn't really smell of anything at all. The assistant did say that I shouldn't be put off by the smell, as it would fade away once applied. He then asked if I wanted to buy the bar and this is where I hesitated. The bar itself was tiny, about 7cm long and 4cm wide with a massive price tag - £7.50! In my mind I was thinking 'this is a bit of a rip-off!' I was umming and aahing whilst the assistant continued singing it's praises. In the end I decided to go for it as I knew I'd feel quite guilty afterwards since the assistant had spent so much time explaining. However, as I continued the rest of my shopping trip and as I was driving home I felt a little annoyed with myself for spending so much money on something that would probably not last very long. That evening I decided to give the bar a go. The assistant had explained that this was great under a fresh face mask or used as a moisturiser on it's own. To use I held the bar between my palms, allowing it to melt with the heat from my body. I gently massaged this into my cheeks, skin and forehead, which had been washed beforehand. I found that it absorbed into my skin very easily, though not surprisingly left a greasy sheen to it. I was surprised that it didn't seem to weigh down my skin at all. I found the process of massaging my skin very relaxing and left my bathroom feeling very pampered! I also didn't notice the smell, which is a bonus! I then left it to work overnight. In the morning I was absolutely amazed by how my skin felt. Yes it was soft, but a velvety softness that I've not experienced with a normal moisturiser! My skin felt as if it had been moisturised from the inside and my complexion was positively glowing. The sheen had also disappeared, though it had most likely rubbed onto my pillow during the night! This deep moisturising effect was not short-lived and lasted for a couple of days. I've had this a month now and use this every other night before going to sleep. I really look forward to using this, as it's become a real treat. The massaging action is really relaxing and I drop off to sleep straight away. It's also reassuring to know that with all its vitamins and antioxidants this must be doing some real good, something I hope I'll be thankful for, as I get older. I'm also pleased to say that even though I've used it a lot I've barely made a dent in the bar and it's almost the same size as when I bought it, so my initial fears of it being a very expensive product have been unfounded. Although the assistant said it should be used morning and night I think this is a little greasy for day use and any make up worn would simply slide off! I've also on a couple of occasions used this under a face mask as recommended. I wasn't too sure about this. Surely applying the serum would act as a barrier to the face mask rather than helping the nutrients absorb? Anyhow I still gave it a go. I applied the serum as normal, let it sink in for a few minutes before applying the face-mask. I can't say that I noticed this being more effective than using the face mask on it's own, but that maybe because the fresh face masks are so good anyway! Like many lush products this is unpackaged and so I store this in a plastic tub. I'm careful not to get this wet and during hot weather I've stored this in the fridge to prevent it melting. Overall I'm really impressed by this latest offering. Although initially I was reluctant to part with my hard earned cash, for the effect it has and the fact that it lasts so long, I now consider this really good value. Don't let the small size put you off! I shall definitely be re-purchasing. Saving Face is a serum bar from Lush designed to make oily problem skin behave itself and enhance the effects of any other skin care products you use. It is a pale green oval bar about 7cm long and weighing 20g. It's similar to the massage bars Lush make in that you warm it in your hands to melt the natural oils and butters and then apply it to your face. I was recommended to use this in three ways. Firstly, apply it before bed and leave on overnight which is how I use it. You can also apply it for 20 minutes and then remove before finishing your morning skin care routine/putting on make up, or use it under a face mask to amplify the effect. I find the bar melts easily with just the warmth of your hands so there's no waiting around to apply it. It's not so easy to melt that you're left with a mess though. Once it's melted, simply massage it into your skin and let it do its work. It didn't feel greasy on my skin and was easily absorbed so I didn't have to worry about it coming off on my pillow overnight. The serum contains grapefruit and lime which tone your skin and balance oil production. These also give it a lovely refreshing citrus scent. It also contains thyme which is good for problematic skin, and natural oils to hydrate the skin without being too much for oily skin types. After a couple of weeks of using this daily my skin feels hydrated and healthy. I've also had a slight reduction in oiliness (my skin is extremely oily so you might find more of an improvement if yours isn't so bad). The main benefit though is that it has reduced the redness I get on my nose and cheeks helping to even out my skin tone. I've barely made a dent in the bar after a couple of weeks so this should last you ages. It costs £7.50 but that's good value compared to a lot of serums out there and this has the added benefit of being all natural ingredients and suitable for vegans.
What is it? Saving Face is one of 2 brand new facial serum bars from Lush. They contain highly concentrated naural ingredients to boost the effects of your normal cleanse, tone, moisturise routine to add goodness to the very deep skin cells. Saving face is normal to oily skin. The other bar full of grace is for sensitive skin. I have normal skin and find saving face is perfect. Both are £7.50 each and weigh 20g. It seemed quite expensive to me as the bar is a small flat egg shape and doesn't look too substantial, however a little really goes a long way, in the same way a solid shampoo or conditioner works. It is not tested on animals and is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. How do you use it? Cleanse your face as normal. Simply rub your fingers gently on the top. This will start to melt the bar slightly. Then directly dab onto your face and massage. This stimulates your blood circulation and allows the serum to be absorbed deep into the skin cells. Then moisturise as normal. This will increase the results of your normal routine substantially as it reaches the deep skin cells normal moisturisers can't get to. Ingredients Thyme infusion - alleviates problems Grapefruit and Lime Oil - refreshes skin Illipe and shea butter - natural moisturisers My opinion I loved the smell of this bar, the lime and grapefruit notes really stand out and smell fresh and lively. I was at first shocked at the small size of the bar, but a little really does last a long time and it is still a lot cheaper than competitors inclusing The Body Shop, Origins etc. I love how it isn't tested on animals and is suitable for vegans. The bar is very easy to use and melts onto your fingers. It felt fresh on my skin and absorbed quite well and quickly. My skin felt silky soft and after I used my normal moisturiser my skin felt more than looked after. I've started using this daily in a morning, but it can be used before you go to bed if you have very dry skin.
