Medik8 Red Alert Serum
Advantages: Helps diminish redness on face and fade broken capillaries, all skin types can use it, Non comedogen
Disadvantages: None I can think of
I have had broken capillaries around my nose and facial redness for a while now that can only be covered up by concealer or foundation.
But since my disaster with a certain exfoliator my skin was left more damaged with more broken capillaries on my cheeks and below my eye area that would sting, I would feel a burning sensation every time I applied a product and constant redness, which I covered with makeup.
Unfortunately once you have developed broken capillaries you will have them forever, unless you under go a course of expensive Intense Pulsed Light or ILP for short, that help to strengthen the capillary walls. But they can return if you are not taking really good care of your skin.
So with laser out, it was time to search for a more affordable, yet proven approach and a product that can help to 'heal' the broken capillaries and make them look less prominent.
**So what are broken capillaries?**
Broken capillaries look like small red/pink thread veins that are situated under the skin tissue, they occur when the capillary wall narrows and widen too quickly, causing the muscle in the walls to tear, dilate and break causing blood to leak to the surface of the skin, which results in a broken capillary. Once broken the capillary cannot heal itself or disappear over time.
**What causes broken capillaries and how can I prevent them?**
Broken capillaries can be caused by a rough cleansing routine or using hot water whiles cleansing either at the sink or the hot steam in the shower, harsh exfoliators, sensitive skin, extreme hot and cold weather conditions, sunburn, moving from one extreme temperature to another i.e., freezing cold to a hot house, picking and scratching your face, seasonal colds where you are rubbing your nose etc. Another cause can be due to excessive consumption of alcohol, as blood pressure gets higher causing the veins on your face to dilate.
Unfortunately broken capillaries can become more prominent as you age as your skin gets thinner it becomes easier to see the veins causing more redness.
Preventing of further broken capillaries and reducing the flushed redness of capillaries can be achieved with a good skin care routine without being harsh, using a SPF minimum of 30 every day, this is a must with frequent application, and avoiding all the above that can be damaging and applying a tropical treatment daily to help to strength the capillary walls.
**What product did I find?**
After searching and searching for the 'perfect' product I came across a company called Medik8. Medik8 is a British brand that specialises in formulated proven technologies that deliver real skin benefits and results. All their products have been designed for persons with sensitive skin without ever compromising the products efficacy.
Medik8 only supply to dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, specialist skincare doctors, medical clinicians, derma-pharmacists, qualified skincare professionals and specialist skincare retailers.
Medik8 do a wonderful product called Red Alert Serum, which is a professional strength anti-redness serum. Red Alert was developed to treat facial redness that effects millions of people. The serum provides intensive, calming relief for redness and facial flushing caused by skin becoming hypersensitive and helps to utilise the latest technology for facial thread veins, or more known as broken capillaries.
**What are the claims to using this serum?**
It has been proven to see visible results within one month of use, reduces the appearance of skin redness by up to 30%, helps to heal the inner epidermis to prevent future skin irritation that can cause facial redness and broken capillaries. Visibly reduces the sign of skin ageing, such as enlarged pores, wrinkles, fine lines and blemishes. Helps the skin to maintain a barrier due to environmental stress, ingredient Teprenone also helps the skin in reducing burning sensations, itching and irritation.
**What ingredients make Red Alert so special?**
* Teprenone - this ingredient is a welcome side affect to the serum that delivers anti-wrinkle properties that has been seen and delivered in clinical trials.
* Simmondsia Chinensis Oil - or more commonly known as Jojoba Oil. Is a skin conditioning agent.
* Capric Triglyceride - is an oily liquid made from coconut oil. This ingredient is used in cosmetics and skincare where a SPF is used. It is used to slow the loss of water in the skin by forming a barrier.
* Cyclohexasiloxane - helps to fill in fine lines and wrinkles giving the face a temporary pump look.
* Tocopherol Acetate is a Vitamin E that has beneficial antioxidant affects.
Red Alert Serum comes in a matte white box that states it can be recycled and came from a Carbon Neutral company.
The box tells you how to apply the product and how it will benefit your skin. There is also a 12 month shelf life once opened.
The product itself comes in a 15ml brown glass bottle with a black pipette for easy dispense. The back states Medik8 supply in small batches to ensure the potency of the product.
**Applying the product**
Unlike other oil skincare products that need to be blended before facial application, Medki8 have formulated Red Alert Serum for direct skin application with harmful affects to the skin.
Directions of use say to apply the serum in the morning and or evening on cleansed skin. The product can be applied to the whole face or specific areas of concern and follow with a SPF in the morning.
After cleansing my face in the morning and squeezing a drop from the pipette onto my finger tip I am pleased to see the oil is clear with no scent. As the oil is a very runny liquid, if you are applying it to your whole face I would recommend applying a drop at a time to an area and massaging it in before moving to another area. I applied a drop to both cheeks and massaged it up to my lower lash line with no problems, nose and chin area then gently massaging it into my skin and more so at prominent areas of redness and broken capillaries.
The oil feels cool on the skin but quickly warms up; the product glides on the skin and spreads far with little effort. Before applying another product over the top like your SPF in the day time or a moisturiser at night, make sure Red Alert has fully sunk in before another application. For me I found this to be around five or so minutes.
Red Alert feels soothing and moisturising on the skin without leaving you with a greasy feel like you would expect when using an oil. When the oil has been applied to the skin without fully sinking in, I can see all ready that the redness is dying own on my cheeks in particular and my face looks more even toned.
Please Note: To get the benefit from this product all serums or oils need to be applied to the skin before any other treatment.
**How well did Red Alert work?**
I started using Red Alert just before my holiday in June 2011 and have continued to do so ever since, however I have not always been applying the serum every day and not always twice a day, but I have noticed a difference in the way my skin looks.
On application my skin looks more even toned and over time redness in cheeks and chin have diminished although not gone completely, but the broken capillaries? Well I am pleased to say they have improved also, I know I will never get rid of them without laser treatment but the colour of a capillary is less noticeable and actually seem smaller than before.
I am beginning to wear less concealer and foundation and sometimes I can get away with a tiny amount of concealer and no foundation, which is always a plus.
** Can any skin type use this serum/oil?**
Even though I have combination/oily skin that likes to break out, most oils on the market have been developed for all skin types and Red Alert falls into that category. Medik8's finroamtion on this product is a little misleading, one part says it can be used for problem skin and another part is not checked for that skin type. Because of this I emailed Medki8 and asked them. I was re-assured Red Alert Serum doesn't aggravate problem skin and it not a problem for all skin types to use but has been developed for all ages and persons with facial redness.
**Price and availability**
You can purchased Red Alert Serum from Medik8 professional suppliers for £28.00, alternately you can purchase the product at a fantastic £18.90 with free postage and packing from www.feelunique.com
**What I think about it / do I like it**
I adore the fact this product is fragrance-free with no parabens and no petrochemicals. Non comedogenic or acne aggravating and can be used for all skin types. Sinks in quickly with no greasy feeling.
**Would I purchase again?**
I have no problem purchasing this product again, it has achieved what I wanted out of this product to diminish redness on my face and reduce broken capillaries, which we are very sensitive to the touch.
I have had my product since June and using around four drops a time I nearly half way down the bottle and the last thing I would say is, with any product you need to continually use to see results.
Summary: Great product for persons with facial redness and broken capillaries
