Montagne Jeunesse Sauna Masque
Advantages: Quick to use, left my skin super soft, an effect which proved surprisingly long lasting
Disadvantages: Did not deep clean my pores, disappointing aroma
I use face masks as part of my normal weekly skin care routine. There are a couple of deep cleansing clay masks that I regard as my staples, but I also like to experiment with different products when I see them. I recently tried a Montagne Jeunesse self heating mask in the hot chocolate orange variety and I was really impressed with the scent. It was out of stock in my local Boots, so I picked up another self heating alternative - the brand's "Sauna Masque - Red Hot Clay". I wish I had waited for the other one to come back in stock!
WHAT THE MASK IS SUPPOSED TO DO, AND WHO IT IS SUITABLE FOR.
The sachet that I bought is a 15g one and it cost £1.01. The packaging says the mask is suitable for normal, oily and t-zone skin. [My skin is combination so the oily t-zone definitely applies.] It is supposed to be deep cleansing and anti stress. The heating action helps to open the pores and aid the removal of deeper down dirt and "impurities". Lastly it is said the mask will leave your skin smooth, and that while excess oil will be removed, the skin will not be dryed out. This last part is important for someone like me with combination skin as some products that deal with oily areas are too harsh on my dry patches. The clay helps with the cleansing, and aromatherapy oils such as evening primose and jasmine flower have been added to make cover the relaxing element. Like all MJ products, this mask is not tested on animals, and it is suitable for vegetarains.
Like all Montagne Jeunesse products, the mask comes in a foiled sachet, which you can cut or tear open at the corner. I normally squeeze a mask out through a narrow gap, so it is easier to control. When I tried to do that with this one nothing happened and I ended up cutting off the whole top. The reason is that, unusually for this companies products, the sachet isn't very well filled. I did wonder whether there would actually be enough to treat my whole face but in fact there was some to spare. The mask looks thinner than some clay ones I have used in the past, but this means that it spreads on easily. It doesn't look as dark red as it does in the picture on the packet, more of a light dusky pink. I thought that with all of the lovely aromatherapy oils included that the product would be more aromatic. It does have a scent above the familiar one of clay, but it isn't as strong as I would have liked. I can detect citrus scents mainly. One of main reasons I like MJ products is the fact that they often smell fantastic as well as natural, so this was a bit disappointing. I don't even normally like highly scented facial products, but I was willing to make the exception for this brand because of the quality of their scent.
It is recommended that you clean your face with plain water, and then apply the mask to the wet skin. It feels a bit sticky but it didn't make my hands too messy as I smoothed it down. The first layer looked pale so I added more to ensure I had a good depth of coverage. The self heating action was apparent as soon as I had some on my fingers. It felt quite hot as I was applying it, more so than other similar masks. It didn't get to the point of being uncomfortable, but I wouldn't have wanted it any hotter. You are instructed to leave the mask on for 5 minutes which makes it one of the fastest to use. By the end of that time, the heating action had disappeared for me. The mask doesn't dry out much so I didn't feel my skin was tightening. I sometimes find that sensation unpleasant so I was pleased about that. Overall, the experience of using it was fairly pleasant but I didn't find it as relaxing as using other masks. At first I was wondering how much hotter it was going to get, and after that I was thinking that I couldn't smell the usua lovely aromas.
DOES IT WORK?
I managed to wash the mask off without too much difficulty. Afterwards, my skin did feel refreshed and clean. A close look at the open pores around my nose though, revealed that they had not been completely deep cleansed. Some were clearly blocked. Less troublesome parts of my face faired better, included my prone-to-shine forehead, which had a perfect matte appearance. What I liked the most though, was how my skin felt. It felt baby soft and smooth. In fact, it still felt this a good 4 days. I didn't even feel that I needed to use my normal daily facial moisturiser on my dry cheeks during that time. I certainly did not feel de-stressed or relaxed after using this mask though.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THE MASK?
I did not enjoy using this mask as much as others in the range because it didn't smell as good to me. It felt as though it was heating up my face more than other similiar masks, and therefore opening the pores more in theory, so it is odd that it proved to be a less effective deep cleanser. As the two main claims of the mask, as they appear on the front of the packaging, are that it offers both de-stressing and pore cleansing, I have to rate it down for proving disappointing in both those areas. I did love the soft skin I ended up with, and I would use the mask again solely for this benefit if my cheeks were going through a bad dry spell. I won't use it more often because deep cleaning is the main benefit I hope to achieve when using a mask. I would recommend it if you have dry skin, and want to achieve a long lasting facial softness and smoothness. For everyone else, I would say there are better masks available for deep cleansing in my opinion.
The mask is widely available in the usual places such as Superdrug, Boots, Savers and online retailers.

Summary: A good mask for softening and smoothing skin, but a let down at deep cleansing
