I am lucky in that in my previous life I was given the opportunity to try most cosmetic and skin care brands on the market. Strongly enough though I had never tried anything from the Neals Yard range until I got a lovely gift set as a present from a friend after giving birth, due to being somewhat busy at the time! It got put under my bed ( I really should do a review of what's under there like the handbag ones, it would however be the size of War and Peace).
While I was in my local newsagent a few weeks ago I noticed that a magazine was giving away a 25ml tube of the Orange flower daily moisturiser so I decided to go home and dig it out.
====== Neal's Yard ======
Neal's Yard remedies were created in 1981 when the first shop opened in Covent garden in London, their vision was to create products that were based in nature and made up mostly of herbs and naturally produced oils.
If you are familiar with there products you will know that most products come in distinctive blue bottles and their reason for this was that early herbs used by Apothecaries were kept in blue bottles as apparently the dark glass keeps the light out and makes the herbs stay fresh for longer.
======= The Product ======
The moisturiser is in the classic colour of lilac and purple, I do think that the packaging is quite old fashioned although I am sure that some would describe it a classic.
The moisturiser claims to replenish and protect dry skin and the bottle tells you that "Nourishing neroli and antioxidant pomegranate oils intensely moisturise soothe and protect dry skin in a light and easily absorbed lotion"
====== My Opinion ======
The first thing that I noticed when I opened the cream was the smell!, I can really only describe it as a heavy dense lavender mixed with orange scent, I thought that it was quite an old fashioned smell and is what I have heard described as an old lady scent.
The cream is an off white colour and dispenses easily in fact if you have the tube variety you may find that the cream comes out to easily. The texture of the cream is very light and soft and Found that it had quite a watery consistency to it that was unexpected as the cream is designed for dry skin.
I applied the moisturiser and noticed straight away that the cream just disappeared into my skin and was absorbed really quickly and when I touched my skin afterwards I noticed that it felt very smooth to the touch and even though I only used a small amount I was very surprised at how moisturised my skin felt, there was no tightness to it and the cream just disappeared into my skin. The only downside to applying the cream was that strong smell that I am afraid lingered for quite a while.
As I said the cream is designed for dry skin and I was concerned that due to the watery consistency it may actually irritate my dry areas as some watery creams or lotions have done before but this was not the case and my whole face felt soft and well moisturised and it felt as though I did not have any thing on my skin at all so it was very comfortable to wear.
I was disappointed that my face did not feel moisturised all day and I did feel the need to reapply later in the day which is not always convenient if you are at work or out and have a face full of makeup! While on the subject of makeup I was delighted to realise that the moisturiser provided a great base for my makeup as the skin was well moisturise red with out feeling greasy and allowed my makeup to sit well on my skin.
======== Conclusion ========
I do think that this is a nice moisturiser to use particularly if you have normal to dry skin as it will soften your skin and the texture of the cream makes it very comfortable to wear and it did not irritate any dry patches. The main disadvantages of this cream is the smell as it's quite strong and while the scent disappears quite quickly you are not going to use a cream every day with a scent that you don't like.
I would not recommend the moisturiser if you have really dry skin and the reason that I say that is because it would need to be applied more than once a day and there are creams out there that would do that job better with just one application.
======== Cost And Availability =======
The moisturiser is available from the Neal's yard shop and also online at wwwnealsyardremedies.com . You can also order over the phone on 0845 262 3145. The price is approx £20.00
Browsing the magazine aisle in my local Tesco the other day I spotted Red magazine had a free 25ml tube of Neal's Yard nourishing orange flower daily moisture cream. This normally retails at £7.00 and with the magazine costing only £3.60 I figured I'd be quids in and decided to buy. I've always been intrigued by Neal's Yard's products and have visited their shop in Covent Garden with a friend but never really bought anything as they seemed a little pricey. I was therefore quite curious and excited about trying the cream.
The tube itself is a pleasant lilac and purple colour, with a yellow strip running across the front with the product name. The front also states that the cream replenishes and protects dry skin. It contains nourishing neroli and antioxidant pomegranate oils to intensely moisturise, soothe and protect dry skin, in a light, easily absorbed lotion. "What's neroli oil?" I found myself asking. A quick look on Google reveals that it is an essential oil derived from the blossom of the bitter orange tree and is traditionally used to relieve tension, anxiety and increase circulation. The product also contains no mineral oils, no synthetic fragrances or colours and no parabens. The ingredients used have been certified organic.
Just looking at the label I was a little confused as to what type of lotion this was. Was it a face cream? Or for the hands? Feet? I couldn't find any clue on the label so resorted to visiting the Neal's Yard website to find out.
What Neal's Yard say:
"Apply after cleansing to give daily nourishment to the face. A light moisturising lotion created to infuse the skin with the nutrients required to support good health and a radiant complexion. Essential fatty acids from pure plants oils are combined the precious essential oil from orange tree blossom to encourage cellular regeneration, while moisture boosting hyaluronic acid gives skin a dewy freshness. Recommended for all skin types, but especially to replenish dry skin."
So it's a face cream! Great! Let's give it a go! I opened the tube, which has a screw on lid and removed the foil protector. I gave it a little sniff before squeezing some out and boy did it smell strong. It had a very citrusy smell that was quite bitter and reminded me of orange peel. In fact it was so strong that I found it catching the back of my throat. I took an instant dislike and scrunching up my nose I thought "not a good start!"
I squeezed a little onto my hand and applied it to my face. I found it to be very light and absorbed into my skin very easily. This to be was a bonus as the face cream I currently use by Garnier is heavy and takes forever to absorb (see separate review!) I have to say that the first time I applied this my skin tingled quite a lot for a few minutes but then subsided. I thought that I may be reacting to some of the ingredients but there was no redness and the tingling disappeared. I tried again a few days later with no problems.
My skin felt silky soft afterwards and I kept having the urge to stroke my face! However the smell was quite strong and lingered for a few hours afterwards. For me this is a major downside and would prevent me from buying the product again, as well as taking away 2 dooyoo stars. However I'm impressed by Neal's Yard's approach to skincare and the high quality natural ingredients they use. I will be exploring other face creams in their range, even though they are pricey.
