I've used this product on and off for years. I was introduced to this blackhead eliminating scrub by my sister; she works in a pharmacy. Now in my mid 40s, I have had combination skin for a number of years and this in turn was preceded by many years of oily skin which naturally attracted blackheads.
The medical name for "blackhead" is comedone. The free online dictionary gives further information about comedones: "a plug of keratin and sebum within a hair follicle that is blackened at the surface".
No matter what you call it, this phenomenon is one that all of my friends and I have done our best to avoid and remove. Over the years (and decades!) I have tried many products. This one is at least as good as the others.
I am fairly familiar with the brand having previously used the Neutrogena face wash soap bar in my teenage years. This face scrub is sold in a flip-top plastic tube that holds 150ml. The product is viscous, meaning that I am less likely to dispense more than I need.
The product has a light floral scent and is white in colour with a few orange and dark specs throughout.
This product is easy to dispense and to use. When I use this scrub - every six months or so - I apply it once a day I in a typical manner: I dampen my face with a face cloth or by splashing water, place some scrub into the palm of my hand and then apply it to several places on my face with the fingers from my other hand. I then use a circular motion to buff away the blackheads, grime and dead skin. Or at least that's what I hope is happening at the time. It is then easy to rinse off with a small amount of tepid to warm tap water.
My overall opinion
In my opinion this is a gentle exfoliator that leaves my skin feeling cleaner than when I only use water, and also less dry than when I use soap products. My skin does feel soft and not dried out. I'm not a huge fan of the scent, but I am also not put off buying this product because of its smell.
But does it improve my blackheads? Well, I do believe that they are less prominent and that there are less of them. This is not a perfect face scrub, but it is one which gives my skin noticeable improvement and a gentle tingle.
I suffer from blackheads on my nose and forehead and really wanted to try and find a product that would manage to somehow lift them out and remove them. I decided on a recent trip to Superdrug to purchase the Neutrogena Blackhead eliminating scrub in the hopes it would do just that. I picked up my 150ml bottle for around £4.00
So, to begin with the packaging for this product is fairly standard, it is a tube with a flip top lid from which you can squeeze product onto your hand. Simple and efficient. Neutrogena have put some of the claims regarding the performance of this scrub on the bottle, they have written prominently on the front of the tube that it 'helps eliminate and prevent blackheads for up to three weeks'. Initially I didn't pay much attention to that claim, however now that I think about why only three weeks? Surely continued use of the product should help to remove and then prevent blackheads for as long as you use the scrub?
The product has been developed with dermatologists and as such shouldn't irritate the skin, unless you have very very sensitive skin. I personally have mildly sensitive skin and had no issues with this product, in terms of skin irritation. Sadly however, that's probably the most success I had with the scrub. It is recommended that this product is used daily, which I did, however I found that it neither removed nor I imagine prevented blackheads. I wasn't expecting miracles but sadly I did not notice any results at all from this. The product does perform well as a daily scrub in terms of exfoliation, however as it's main selling point is as a targeted product for blackheads I felt a bit disappointed with the results. The only reason I would ever repurchase this would be as a simple exfoliater, however there are many many other brands which I think exfoliate better then this product also, so I would not pick it out over other brands.
I will give this product 3/5, mostly because it did exfoliate well, was gentle enough to use everyday and didn't irritate my skin, but apart from that I would not recommend this as a treatment for blackheads unfortunately.
I suffer from spots and blackheads and I hate it! Throughout my early teen years I have been in search of a product that will rid me of the burden of self consciousness. You name a brand, I've probably tried it. From the shelves of supermarkets to department stores and even mail order, I have tried and tested creams, gels, masks... and this is just one of them.
Rebranded and repackaged from the bottle seen in the picture, the slim line orange bottle has an underside lid which allows for easy dispensing. The transparent plastic front also allows you to monitor how much of the scrub is left, and the soft material is easy to squeeze every last drop.
~~~APPEARANCE, SMELL, TEXTURE AND USING THE PRODUCT~~~
The white creamy paste is embedded with tiny orange microbeads which will do all the hard work. It has a fresh soapy scent and spreads easily over your face. Using a small pea-sized amount each time and massaging it into the skin, you can feel the abrasion of the beads against your face.
For me, this was not a problem but for those with sensitive skin, this may be an irritating feeling. I found this just right in terms of feeling and I had no problems with the usage of this product.
Promising to eliminate blackheads, I was utterly disappointed with the results. With such high hopes, the failure was even more painful as I look into the mirror and see that nothing has changed.
Whilst it did manage to 'clean', that was to be expected. What I needed was one that truly eliminated my blackheads, for good, and this certainly did not live up to the claims it made.
A supermarket brand with a supermarket price, this could be bought for £3.99 and is likely to be on some sort of offer.
On my quest of finding the ultimate skincare products, Neutrogena's blackhead eliminating scrub fails to deliver a satisfactory experience and have left me striving on across the horizon in search for that one product, that works.
-OXY Daily Face Wash- £4
a gel imbedded with varied bead sizes- slightly more harsh but works better.
-DERMATOLOGICA Ready Set Scrub! £25
A fine mask/scrub which has fine beads which refines pores and eliminates blackheads
I have tried endless different products in search of the one that cures spots! I tried many different brands too. The worst thing for me was blackheads, they drove me mad! One day at tesco they had a promotion on Neutrogena and this was half price, I believe I paid £2.00 for this. I though it was worth a try as I had seen many of there adverts on tele and thought that the product may work on my skin. I have very sensitive skin and sometimes a new product will cause me more pain then good and not work. I will now go into a little more detail on the product and explain why this didn't work for me unfortunately.
For roughly £4 you get 150ml of this blackhead scrub. The packaging is now different than the one shown by dooyoo and it is now an orange coloured bottle. It is a squeezable bottle with a hole that puts out a small amount. It is easy to use and you can get the desired amount that you want very easily. The overall design of the product is appealing and this is why many people will want to try it out for themselves. The bottle promises you that it will eliminate and prevent Blackheads in just 3 weeks. You are also told that the product has been developed by dermatologists!!
Back of the bottle:
The back of the bottle gives you instructions on how to use the product. We are told that the creamy texture and the micro beads in the gel will exfoliate and get rid of your existing blackheads. You are then told that in the scrub there is a blackhead fighting ingredient that will stop new ones from forming in the near future. We are told that this is recommend to be used daily with clean and warm water. Obviously :)
Did it work?:
Sadly...no. It was terrible. I felt no positive effects on my skin, I didn't have any less blackheads and I followed the instructions properly. Infact, after 3 weeks use I had more than before. My face didn't feel very clean after use and eventually this hurt my face and caused me irritation. I used it for 3 weeks as that is what was promised. It's terrible for my sensitive skin and I will be avoiding this in the future. It simply didn't work on my skin and I wish I hadn't tried it. Terrible!!
Lovely packaging, terrible rubbish scrub. Didn't work and I felt no good effects, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. It's expensive at full price and I wouldn't say it's worth the £2 I paid :( this gets 1 star from me. Thanks for reading my review! I hope it helped, this just wasnt for me I'm afraid.
I have quite sensitive skin, which is also very oily, and so breaks out often. I tend to always stick to St Ives apricot scrub which keeps my skin pretty clear, however recently I couldn't get my usual scrub and had to look for a temporary alternative until I could get to the chemist. I noticed that my local Tesco had, at the time, this Neutrogena Visibly CLear Blackhead Eliminating Daily Scrub, currently on offer in Tesco for £2.11, a pound or so cheaper than usual. Being a fan of the neutrogena norweigian formula hand cream, I was pretty confident in the claims of the product.
THe product comes in the from of a tube, although mine is different from the picture at the top of the page, no doubt more modern packaging. M
My tube is orange at the top, and states the name of the product. Underneath is says that it 'helps eliminate and prevent blackheads for up to 3 weeks'. It also states that this has been developed with dermatologists.
On the back of the tube, it states that this product, help eliminiate existing blackheads (due to its exfoliating micro beads to unclog ores and remove trapped oil and dirt) and it also prevents blackheads (since it contains a special blackhead fighting ingredient nad has been clinically proven to help provide lasting blackhead reduction.
I have been using this product for at least 2 months now, and I usually intermix it with my St Ives scrub. Although I feel that it leaves my skin clean, and have noticed no difference in terms of the blackheads that I have on my nose. I don't feel that it has either eliminated them or kept them at bay, which is disappointing, since I always thought of Neutrogena as a pretty reliable company.
In saying that I will continue to use it as a face cleanser, but it is my St Ives scrub that I feel is keeping my skin clear and not this. I will not be purchasing this product again as I don't think it works as a blackhead eliminator, which it primarily claims to be.
A disappointing product from Neutrogena.
This gentle scrub immediately works two ways to not only clear out the blackheads you have now, but also to help prevent new ones from forming / First, you'll feel it tingle as its maximum strength acne medicine, Salicylic Acid, penetrates deep to eliminate blackheads by removing stubborn dirt, oil and makeup trapped inside pores / Then, you'll feel its gentle, skin-soothing microbeads exfoliate without overdrying to help stop blackheads before they start / For more blackhead-fighting power, use the scrub daily with Blackhead Eliminating Astringent /
