I don't often get bad breakouts, but when I do, my usual spot-fighting products need some extra help. Otherwise I just leave the odd spots to disappear by themselves. On this occasion, I was looking for that extra help and not really knowing which product to go for I grabbed this one as it was only £2 at the time, and it was a Neutrogena product after all. This isn't a brand I usually go for but I'd still expect good things from them considering the price of it's products! Okay, admittedly I wasn't sold on the whole claim to reduce spot size in just a few short hours, i just wanted something that would help clear my spots considerably quicker than if doing nothing. It might as well have been nothing.
The product itself is very easy to apply even under makeup. However it is very thick in texture so takes a while for it to dry and lose that 'sticky' feeling. You don't need to apply much because after all according to the product's claims, your spot should be gone within no time! ...erm, not quite. You do only get 15ml of product, and although you only need to apply a little to each spot, you will need to re-apply this to that same spot for another couple of days before it has really started to vanish. Also, it takes at least a day or two for it to reduce raised breakouts to normal skin level. Definitely disappointing on Neutrogena's behalf. Slightly quicker than doing nothing, but not enough to want to buy it again.
I feel like I've been pretty negative about this 'treatment' gel. If you can call it that. It does have some pro's of course... Like it didn't dry out or irritate my skin, and it was invisible enough to wear under makeup. But that really is about it. I'm just glad I didn't spend any more than I did on this, and although I did end up using the whole tube, I doubt I will be re-purchasing. Honestly, if you really want to do yourself a favour... Save your money on this one, and buy something else.
I'm always on the hunt for products that can either prevent spots or make them disappear more quickly. This quick-drying gel claims to reduce size and redness of spots without damaging the skin, and as one feature of my acne is that it can last quite a long time I thought it was worth giving this treatment a try. Spots should be reduced within 48 hours of use.
This comes in a small tube, with the distinctive orange, gray and blue Neutrogena colouring, and says it contains Derma-Naturals. It costs about £4.50 for 15ml, and a larger size is not really necessary as such a small amount is used each time. It has a white cap that you unscrew, then squeeze the tube and the gel comes out easily, without too much coming out at once. The gel is clear and has a fairly thick consistency so it is easy to apply it exactly where needed without the product running.
The gel should be applied directly to clean skin where a spot is coming or is already there. Upon applying the gel, it stings quite a bit which I took to be a sign that it would work. This is probably the effect of the salicylic acid. It then dries quickly and does not affect the feel of the skin. It doesn't make the skin feel sticky or dried out immediately after use, which I again took as a good sign.
It certainly did speed up the healing of spots, but it created a different problem. While the product claims not to be harsh on the skin or to over-dry, I found that the areas where I applied this gel became incredibly dry. The spot would turn into a patch of dry, flaky skin, which is then quite difficult to cover with concealer or foundation. This often happens to me anyway with spots but I found that this product made the dryness much more likely to occur. I certainly was not over-using this product, only applying it once a day when the tube recommends applying it morning and night.
This product turned out not to be for me at all, which is a shame as it did quickly get rid of spots and stop ones that were on their way form fully forming. However this overdrying effect was, to me, just as bad as the original problem. I have read plenty of positive reviews for this product, so it is possible that it is useful for some people, but if your spots have any tendency to dry out in this way I feel that this product will simply exacerbate this problem for you.
I've never been particularly impressed with the Neutrogena range as i find its never strong or consistent enough to keep up with especially teenage skin who the brand is aimed at. It promises several things but never lives up to them but still i purchases this product as i was in desperate need and it was on offer so i thought why not.
I picked it up from my local pharmacy on offer for just £2 but i know in supermarkets or places like boots its priced at just over £3 which is quite high considering the size of the bottle and what else you could get for that money. It stood out to me more than the rest of the range of neutrogena as it appeared more powerful by its packaging. It was the signature neutrogena packaging with a useless lid and really poor bottle structure as when you reached half way down you did nothing but shake and squeeze the bottle till your arms were sore! Really time wasting indeed. It promised several things such as it reducing spots in just 8 hours. The instructions and information on the bottle was ridiculously small with not much detail.
Onto the produt, i applied it as directed and instantly i was struck with a stinging sensation which i took it as it was working so continued with it. The smell is very overpowering as well which will put some people off, and left me with abit of a headache. Due to poor instructions, i rubbed it onto the spot at a guess and left it to dry or should i say stick. It didn't dry straight away and was very wet and sticky on my skin with a bright shiny patch right on my face. The next morning it still looked sticky but actually dried the spot out so much i had to use a ton of moisturiser to try and rescue it! Everywhere i applied the product, it just made my skin dry and it was definetly after 8 hours so it failed here! The redness of my spot was just as bad, if not more and actually broke me out in more small spots around where i had used the product. I expected a miracle and didn't even get a glimpse.
This product is very misleading and does not work according to what it states. Id stick to a stronger cleanser from a different brand and stay away from the so called 'acne eliminating' treatment. It doesnt elimate anything but moisture and texture in your skin. It did last quite long which is the only benefit of the product. I was extremely dissapointed and won't be buying this again.
I am not afraid to say that I am far, far too old to get spots. However, despite having left my teenage years long ago, my skin seems to be a little slow in getting the message, and still curses me with the occasional blemish or pimple. Blackheads, white heads, red heads, they all come along at times and I would love to be able to zap them away instantly when they rear themselves up. So in the spirit of finding something to do exactly that, I picked up Neutrogena Visibly Clear Rapid Clear Treatment.
~~~What it promises~~~
This product is marketed as a quick-drying gel with MicroClear TM technology, which is 'clinically proven to reduce visible spots and blemishes within 8 hours - without being harsh on skin'. The blurb on the tube promises me clear, healthy looking skin and tells me that it is Dermatologist Tested. This all sounds very encouraging and at this point I was looking forward to seeing the gel work its miracles on my ugly facial friends.
The gel comes in a 15 ml tube which has the trademark Neutrogena colours of orange and grey, with a blue stripe. It is a squeezy tube and has a clear plastic screw lid at the bottom, underneath which is the nozzle that the gel comes out of. The instructions for use are printed (in ridiculously small writing) on the back of the tube. I personally think the tube is quite cute and it is certainly small enough to be carried round in your handbag if you should wish. However, I have found that it is quite difficult to get the gel out once you've used half the tube or so, and you have to spend a long time squeezing, even if you've stored the tube on its lid. Plus, because the tube is opaque, you won't be able to tell that you're running out, until you've...run out.
The tube tells me to apply the gel directly to the affected areas (a nice term for spots!) twice a day, morning and night. Apparently it is safe to use everyday. I guess we are supposed to use our fingers for application, so if you're using this make sure you wash your hands first, as there's no point adding even more bacteria to the spot.
~~~What's it like to use, and does it work?~~~
Ok, enough of checking out the packaging for Dooyoo purposes! The time to actually use the product had arrived. I dutifully applied a blob of the clear gel to each of my spots. At first it felt quite cool and smooth, but on some of the more sensitive or swollen spots it stang a bit, and was a little astringent.
I wasn't entirely sure whether to rub the gel in or just leave it on the surface, so I tried different ways with different spots! Ultimately I don't think it made a difference.
I checked my spots a lot over the next few hours. And then again the next day. They were not any better. If anything, one or two of them looked slightly angrier than they had done before applying the gel. Since then I have used this gel quite a bit, in the hope that one day it would actually work, and because I don't want to buy another product without using this one up, but I don't think that it has had a positive affect on any of my blemishes. This is really disappointing and I am going to have to search out a new spot treatment.
~~~Price and availability~~~
I bought this from Asda for £3.22, but I would imagine you could also get it from any supermarket, Boots, Lloyds or Superdrug. I won't be buying it again though, as unfortunately it just doesn't do what it promises.
