Advantages: Feels gentle, effectively cleans skin, nice scent, nice texture

Disadvantages: Doesn't remove makeup like it claims, expensive for what it is

As most people will be aware, No 7 is a Boots brand which offers skincare and makeup items. I always had the impression it was a brand for slightly older women and as someone in my 20s I rarely found myself drawn to their counter. However, every once in a while Boots stores give out their famous £5 vouchers for use on No 7 products, which entices me to try some.

No 7 recently tried to modernise some of their skincare and make it appeal to a younger shopper. This is where the new Beautiful Skin range came in. The range offers different products for dry or oily skin. The oily skin products which are the ones I have tried, including this foaming cleanser, come in simple and clean looking packaging which has a hint of green. Other skin types are recognisable by other colours.

=== Packaging ===

The foaming cleanser comes in a clear cylindrical bottle with very basic branding and writing on it. Inside you can see the pale green liquid and the pump mechanism. It allows you to easily see how much cleanser is left inside. There is a pale green ring around the neck and a clear lid showing a sturdy white pump at the top. To use it you simply take the lid off, press down on the pump and the cleanser will be dispensed in the form of a light and airy foam. You get a fair amount of foam from one press of the pump. However, I think the amount could do with being ever so slightly more. I often end up pumping a second time, which probably gives a bit too much cleanser and is a bit wasteful, meaning I get through it fairly quickly.

=== Use ===

As with any foaming cleanser, this should be massaged onto a damp or wet face and then rinsed off with warm water. No 7 state that the cleanser will dissolve make up and impurities, clean the skin, tighten pores and leave the face shine free. It intends to make oily skin behave like normal skin and look "bright and beautiful". This should be used twice a day, morning and night, as part of a cleansing routine before toning or exfoliating and moisturising the skin.

=== Effectiveness ===

First of all, I did not find that this cleanser is able to remove and cleanse all makeup from my skin. The packaging does claim it removes makeup but I was very doubtful of this to begin with, as in my experience most cleansers can't do it and I prefer to separately remove makeup first in order to cleanse my bare skin. When I used this cleanser straight onto a wet made up face, the results looked and felt pretty horrible! My foundation started to melt a bit but was not completed lifted off, leaving the foam an unappealing beige colour and my face not clean. Eye makeup also ran all over the place but remained smeared on my face. If you use full make up, especially long lasting products, you definitely need to remove the make up before washing your face with this cleanser.

As for washing my bare makeup free face, this is a more pleasant experience and the cleanser is up to this task! The foam has a pleasing, light and fresh green smell. I am not sure exactly what it smells of, but the scrub in the same range smells the same, so maybe it is just a typical No 7 Beautiful Skin range smell. The foam feels really nice and gentle when I rub it into my skin. It is very airy in texture. Some oily skin products can feel a bit harsh, but this does not at all. It does not contain soap, which can sometimes leave the skin feeling a bit tight or dried out, so my skin is not left feeling tight or uncomfortable at all following a wash with this cleanser.

It leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean. It does keep my skin shine free but I didn't see any noticeable effect on my pores. I would not say that the results are better than other cleansers I use and it is comparable to most cleansers, including cheaper ones.

=== Value ===

The full price of this is £9 for 150 ml, which I feel is quite expensive for what it is. It makes it about the same price per ml as my usual Clinique cleanser although I would have considered No 7 to be a cheaper brand. It does the job, but the Boots Botanics cleanser for oily skin which looks and feels quite similar is just as nice and effective at about half the price. The 150 ml bottle will go down fairly quickly, especially if you use two pumps of the cleanser each time.

If you have a £5 voucher and can get this cleanser for £4 I think that's good value. When I bought this there were also a lot of extra points offers around on this range, printable from the extra offers kiosk in store. However at £9 I think it is a bit steep for what it is.

Summary: A decent cleanser, but nothing special
