      An affordable efficient moisturiser. Questionable ethics and ingredients.

      ~*~ OLAY ~ THE COMPANY ~*~

      In 1949, a creative and innovative chemist, Graham Wulff, from what is now the largest city in South Africa, Durban, conceived in his home laboratory, what is now a globally known moisturiser, Oil of Olay. Working much of the time, alongside his wife Dinah, being not only a co-researcher but as the product tester! Even Wulff's marketing partner, Jack Lowe, his wife and all their friends and families did not escape the trial testing!

      In the words of Wulff: "It needed to be...as close as possible to skin sebum. Something that would penetrate rapidly, be compatible with the skin, remain stable, restore and hold moisture, while protecting the skin and leaving the surface with a supple, matte finish, ten minutes after application." As a fundamental component of this lotion, Wulff had named this product as a twist on the word lanolin!

      An innovative spin to this remarkable product is that even the marketing ploy was creative, advertising simply stated "Share the secret of a younger looking you" and the 'beauty secret' of the fluid, not mentioning even on the product's packaging what the lotion was. A fictitious advice journalist, under the name of Margaret Merril was invented.

      As the product was marketed internationally, it was wisely agreed to alter the name in each country, to enhance the lotion's acceptability, as it would sound desirable and authentic to the consumer. Thus in the UK and Ireland, it was known as Oil of Ulay, In Australia, Oil of Ulan, and France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Oil of Olaz.

      In 1985 Procter & Gamble acquired the company. Then in 1999, it was determined to consolidate the brand under an international name. Therefore, Oil of Ulay and Oil of Ulan became Olay except in Italy and German-speaking regions where it kept the name Oil of Olaz. The Netherlands and Belgium, known simply as Olaz.

      ~*~ REASON FOR PURCHASE ~*~

      I'm fifty plus years and suffer very dry skin on my face. It feels uncomfortable in the way of tightness, particularly noticeable after I'm walking home from the swimming pool and after washing my face. I am also troubled by an irritating itchy skin on areas of my face. The skin is noticeably dry, especially when I'm not wearing make-up and if I apply non-fluid foundations. No doubt this is due to the amount of sun bathing I used to do as a young woman. Additionally, pollution in the environment has added to the dryness in the skin and the irritants suffered. Central heating, weather extremes, hormones and diet all play their role in this bothersome condition.

      The most basic function of moisturisers is to replace the internal water loss through the skin {trans-epidermal). My daughter bought me 'Olay Complete Care Night Enriched Cream for Normal, Dry and Oily' skin to try in improving my skin's condition.

      ~INGREDIENTS~

      There are no less than FORTY-FIVE ingredients in this one product! Please view the 'Supplementary' list on these ingredients and their usage task.

      ~~~~~~MY EXPERIENCE~~~~~~
      ~FRAGRANCE~
      When I first opened the lid to this delicate off white with faint hints of pink tones to the cream, the familiar Olay fragrance lightly drifts out. The smell is very difficult to describe as the odour is so gentle yet captivating. The perfume is close to the most subtle scents of rose, chamomile and Ylang ylang, leaving on the skin the softest tinged with sweet essence. Olay truly has an aroma of its own.
      ~TEXTURE~
      The emulsion has a smooth, fairly thick but liquid texture. I feel it has a refreshing cool to the touch feel. The creamy soft smoothness gives the product a quality characteristic. The moisturiser spreads evenly and finely onto the skin, leaving a fine coating. This intrinsic feature helps to hide some blemishes on my skin. I have pigmentation on my skin due to the Sun's effects, but this transparent cover tends to reduce the intensity of the chroma.
      ~QUALITY~
      My personal experience of the soft and velvety feel to my skin comes within ten minutes of applying the cream. Before retiring to bed, I wash my face in warm to hot water using a clean soft flannel. This way I can cleanse the skin and open the pores ready to moisturise. I pat my skin to almost dry then immediately apply the cream. At first the cream feels somewhat tacky on applying. But the lotion spreads very effortlessly and evenly on my face. Due to the dryness, I generally need to employ a second coating within the first few minutes. Within ten minutes of the second application, my skin begins to feel smooth and malleable. The cream has chance to continue being absorbed into the skin as I don't lie on the pillow directly afterwards. I do find that if ones skin comes into contact with textiles, lotions and creams are substantially erased before certain ingredients have time to be fully absorbed. I generally read for an hour or more therefore the cream has time to treat the disorder.
      Upon waking the next morning, my skin has retained an elasticity and downy feel. Even after washing my face in the morning, I notice the skin appears much less dryer than when I do not apply a moisturiser at night. The skin's sensation to touch has a satiny texture. But within an hour my skin returns to its initial dry tickling itchy feel. If I do not apply a quality day moisturiser, the condition worsens and becomes fairly frustrating, as it tends to distract me from task.
      I've now been using the moisturiser for three weeks and the 50ml tub is now empty. I feel that the double portion I need to apply nightly does not afford longevity of the cream. Furthermore, the lack of moisture in my skin means I need to take up a larger portion of the cream.
      After continuing the nightly routine, I'm feeling the positive effects are now lasting longer the day after. I'm aware of a more noticeable appearance of moisture and less apparent blemishes. But as for looking "younger", only time will tell! The cream leaves a gentle transparent coating on the skin.
      ~DURABILITY~
      Throughout the duration I have had the cream there has been no congealing to this products contents. Although I leave the product open for as long as it takes me to apply, approximately five to ten minutes, then securing the lid on tightly. Moreover, the contents never deteriorate. Although I wash my hands before administering the cream, there are still bacteria present on the skin. But there has been no decay in the product from this, mould or yeast. In fact, the product retains the appearance and feels on the final day of usage as it did when I initially opened the lid on the first day.
      ~LONGEVITY~
      For me, the cream doesn't last long, as mentioned above. The longevity of the cream is upon personal requirement. If one has normal/oily skin, only one application would be requires per evening along with the size of a 50p coin amount. This should help to increase the 50ml container to at least a month or more.
      ~NEGATIVES~
      The organization, 'People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) confirm that Olay, Procter & Gamble do test their products on animals.
      Olay contains parabens. As noted on wikipedia.org: "Parabens are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries". As indicated on the 'WebMD Better information. Better health web site': "While current studies do not causally link parabens with tumors, neither do these studies demonstrate that parabens are safe; the long-term health effects of exposure to parabens are essentially unknown"
      ~PRICE~
      My daughter purchased this cream in Superdrug as it was on offer for £4.99. Prices vary but I have seen Olay products on fairly regular sale prices in major retail outlets. This product is also available on-line but beware of postage prices.
      ~*~ Would I recommend this product? ~*~
      YES!
      I have no doubts that this product works as a highly efficient moisturiser. Five stars.
      NO!
      On a moral perspective, I would not recommend, due to the aforementioned ethical viewpoint. Furthermore, the questionable health risk poses another dilemma. One would need to allow their informed choice be their guide! 0 stars.
      Therefore, I will give this product three stars (2 1/2 unavailable) in an effort to take in all of the product's features and manufacturing ethos.
