I do not have a vast collection of beauty products even though some might say I need them.
I have tried many different products but some do not produce the results they claim, so once I do find a brand that suits, I tend to stick with it no matter what else comes onto the market.
However, there is one brand I have been happily using from my early teens and that is Olay. Their moisturising creams are gentle and are rapidly absorbed into the skin, so when I discovered their new face wash, Olay Essentials refreshing face wash; I had no hesitation in purchasing a tube to try.
They claim it suits all types of skin, normal and dry and a 150ml tube costs £2.99 at Boots. It has more ingredients than you can throw a spanner at, far too many to list here, but contains the soothing extracts of Aloe and extracts of cucumber, which gives that cool refreshing feel as it is massaged into the skin.
In the form of a clear gel, it has a pleasant, fresh floral aroma; 150ml will provide at least 150 refreshing, face washes.
I find that a small blob, enough to cover a one-penny coin, is sufficient to form a lovely scented lather on the face; it feels so refreshing first thing in the morning, especially when rinsed off with splashes of cold water. It leaves the face clean and feeling vibrant and unlike soap and some face washes, it does not leave my skin feeling tight and dehydrated.
Olay’s instructions for use are as follows; “Gently massage onto wet face and neck then thoroughly rinse off with warm water and gently pat dry.”
I tend to skip the warm water bit and use cold, just for that extra zingy feel first thing in the morning then, even though it does not feel necessary, I massage in some Olay moisturiser.
I bought this product as it was on sale for a decent price at Wilkos. Usually I see face washes costing over five or six pounds, which I find to be quite a lot, so I tend to make my own from everyday products that you can find in your kitchen. I find that they work perfectly fine but I bought this as it is just makes things a little more convenient.
It is simple to apply, you just need to dampen your face and then apply the face wash to create a lather. It is really smooth and does not feel harsh on your skin at all. The face wash is a gel and it is a great consistency that makes it easy to apply. I really like this product as it is inexpensive and works so well. It leaves a refreshing feeling and leaves my skin feeling really fresh.
I love Olay products and one of the ones I am using at the moment is their Essentials Refreshing Face Wash. I went away on a girly trip to London recently with some friends and I took this with me and used it for the four days I was there. It is so convenient to use and it''''s not expensive at just less than three pounds for the tube. It has a flip top lid and it lathers well once it comes into contact with water. It feels and smells absolutely gorgeous on my skin and it never never leaves it feeling tight or taut like soap can do. It rinses off well and leaves my face just feeling wonderfully soft ad fresh and dare i say it? glowing. I have noticed a huge difference in my skin since I have been using this wonderful product and i really do recommend it .
I was browsing on www.amazon.co.uk for various items a while ago, as I had a voucher to use up. I ended up buying several skincare items at this time, with this review outlining my experiences of using the "Olay Essentials Refreshing Face Wash."
I paid in the region of £2 with free postage for the large tube of Face Wash that is 150ml in size. I thought this price reflected excellent value for money, particularly as I consider the Olay brand to be of a high quality. A quick look online tells me that the product can also be purchased from various online retailers, including www.boots.com, where the current price is £2.99 plus postage costs. You can also purchase in store at Boots, alongside some other drugstores such as some branches of Savers.
(Info correct as @ March 2014).
The packaging is pretty standard for a product like this one, comprising of a chunky tube that is made of squeezable plastic. There is a plastic 'flip up' cap on the bottom of the tube, so it will stand up easily when required. Underneath the flip up cap is a small hole, through which the product can be dispensed easily. I think it is worth noting that I have encountered no difficulties with using either the product or its attractive packaging, even though I suffer with the strength in my hands as a result of various health complaints.
The Refreshing Face Wash resembles a sort of 'gel' product, but it is perhaps a bit thinner and more runny than your average gel, although not excessively so as it doesn't spill or drip easily. It is clear in colour and has a lovely consistency I think; it lathers easily, but without an abundance of foam being produced. Instead, it feels light on the skin, and it spreads very easily over the skin's surface.
I always moisten the face and neck prior to using a product like this one, and in the case of the Olay Face Wash, I find it is beneficial to 'agitate' the product a little in my hand, prior to application. I find that this just allows its lather to 'take hold' as such, rather than spreading the gel over the face in its 'standard' form. This is just my own technique, and of course I'm sure that such things are a matter of personal choice, but I find that obtaining a little lather from the gel prior to application saves a little time and effort on my part which makes this method worthwhile.
I think it is worth noting too that only a small amount of the product is required with each use; this makes the purchase price feel like excellent value, particularly as the large tube has lasted for quite a long time. Taking this into account, I have no complaints in terms of the product being economical or value for money.
The Olay Face Wash has a fairly strong scent, and this makes its appearance almost as soon as the clear gel has been dispensed from the tube. I can't say that I find it particularly necessary for products like this one to have a scent at all, so its inclusion is neither here nor there for me personally. To be fair, it does smell quite pleasant, with a vaguely 'fruity' tone being noticeable among the stronger, slightly more clinical scents. I do find that the scent is evident throughout the time the Face Wash is present on my skin, but I can't say that I am aware of it once it has been rinsed off and my face has been dried, which suits me down to the ground.
I have found that the Olay Face Wash has worked extremely well, and I do have to admit that the product's formulation seems to be entirely suitable for my own troublesome skin type; the product feels as though it has worked 'in harmony' with my skin type, which has made a pleasant change, as my skin has various difficulties to overcome; it is prone to acne and spot outbreaks, and dryness, as well as being extremely sensitive, to the point of 'flaring' aggressively if anything harsh or inferior is used. These issues can make it something of a challenge to find skincare products that can cope; usually, only two out of these three complaints are dealt with effectively.
The Olay Face Wash, in comparison, has caused no dryness or sensitivity, but neither is its formulation oily, greasy, or too 'rich' for my skin which would no doubt have me grumbling about spot outbreaks. it's very unusual for a product like this to tick every box for me personally, but this one has.
Not only that, but the product seems to be highly effective, allowing its claims that it "lifts away dirt and make-up to effectively cleanse and refresh" to ring true. Indeed, I do find that my skin feels wonderfully refreshed and thoroughly cleansed after use, with all traces of make-up, grease and grime being removed completely. I do have to admit that I do feel there is something of a 'softening' quality to be enjoyed from this particular product too, and whilst this would never be enough of an importance to warrant a purchase based solely on this addition, I do admit to thinking that my skin feels - and looks - refreshed and softened with continued use of this product - a nice bonus, by anyone's standards.
Based on the excellent results achieved from this product, it is probably unsurprising that it comes with my full recommendation, together with full marks in the rating score.
I have been using Olay products for years now as I love the way they look after and protect my skin. This is the wash that I use on my face every morning when I get up, usually not in the shower, just over the sink in order to get my face clean and ready for the day. I sweat quite a bit when I am asleep as I love to be warm and toasty in my bed but all that sweat can't be good for my face so I wake up feeling like I need to give it a good clean.
This refreshing wash is perfect for that as it really is refreshing. According to Olay, "Olay Gentle Cleansers Refreshing Face Wash is specially formulated for gentle everyday cleansing. A formulation of caring cleansing ingredients, containing extracts of Aloe and Cucumber. Lifts away dirt and make up to effectively cleanse and refresh."This wash has a lovely consistency to it, its quite thick and creamy and you can tell thats its a really good quality wash.
As such, you really only need to use a small amount of cream as it really does go a long way. I like to wet my face first and then rub the cream in and what I love about it is that it feels like a cream that you are appkying to your face, itsvthat soft and refreshing even when you are washing with it. The cream comes in a really convenient squeezy tube with a flip cap lid so its easy to get just the right amount in your hands and then close it without making a mess. I like to leave the wash on for a minute or two so my face can feel the full effects. It has a really lovely fresh clean scent to it which makes my skin feel really nice after I was it odd. You can smell a slight scent of cucumber which is always lovely and fresh.
The 150ml tube only costs £2.99 which I think is a great price for a great wash.
I started using face washes a couple of years ago after my skin started to react badly to hard soaps. I have tried several brands of face washes since then. I'm not really loyal to any brand and will often just buy whatever is on offer. I saw this Olay Essentials in my local supermarket recently and it was on offer for £1.50. This made it cheaper than even the supermarket's own brand face wash. I respect and trust the Olay brand after using their moisturiser products in the past so I felt confident about buying this product.
The face wash comes in a 150ml sized soft bottle. This is designed so that it sits on it's lid in order to provide easier and instant dispensing of the liquid. There is a flip lid on the bottle. I'm not sure if it's like this on all bottles (mine could be faulty) but the lid does not seem to be entirely secure. I would not take this away in a suitcase as I'd be afraid the lid might pop open on it's own.
The packaging design is visually appealing. The front of the bottle shows an abstract drawing of a woman's face being splashed by water. This might suggest the product is only suitable for ladies but I'd actually say it would be perfectly fine for men to use too. The back of the bottle is printed with a lot of information including full ingredients, contact addresses for the brand and directions for use.
The brand state this product is suitable for normal, dry or combination skin. They also say the product contains aloe and extracts of cucumber. They say the product is perfect for removing make-up and other dirt and that it will also feel refreshing.
In a blatant attempt to sell up their other products Olay recommend using this alongside the toner in the same range and an Olay moisturiser. The product is meant to be used on the face and neck and one application is enough. You simply massage the liquid into your hands or straight on your face until it lathers and then rinse off.
The liquid face wash is like a gel and is transparent with a viscous consistency. It feels more sticky than other face washes I've used. This is probably a horrible comparison but it reminds me a little bit of snail trails! It blends with water very easily though and dissolves into a bubble rich foam. It is easier for me to rub it in the hands before spreading it over my face. It has a cool, soft feeling.
The fragrance of the face wash is very pleasing. It is not overtly feminine so could be used by both sexes. I would perhaps describe the fragrance as being like a fresh fruit salad. It is very crisp and lively. It makes me feel like I'm really giving myself a deep cleanse. The illustration on the bottle is a pretty apt description of what using the face wash feels like - as though a cool, clean wave of water has just washed over you.
The face wash is very effective at cleaning my face. I would have thought I might have a problem with a mascara I have which is quite thick and long lasting but the gel cleans this straight away. It also leaves my pores looking clean and less oily. I would describe myself as having normal skin but occasionally having combination skin with an oily T-zone. This face wash seems to even up the skin tone so that I'm not shiny or greasy in those areas. It also leaves my skin feeling nice and soft, perky and young. I still moisturise after using it but my skin isn't crying out to be moisturised as the gel is so kind to it.
I am very happy with my purchase and would definitely buy this again in the future. I would also recommend this to women and men. I also think it could suit any age of person as the face wash is very kind to skin. I myself am in my mid thirties and I feel this is the perfect face wash to help me cope with my ageing skin.
You can get this at supermarkets and chemist stores. Prices vary but expect to pay at least £1.50.
This review is also on Ciao!
I was giving this in a gift set for christmas, it came with a toner and a head band thing for when you use a face mask. This face wash retails at £2.99 normally in Boots, and £2.49 in Superdrug, it's currently on offer in both at £2.24 in Boots and £1.66 in Superdrug, for a 150ml bottle, which is the size I have :)
This is a bright coloured blue tube with a pink swish across it, at the top is a blue woman's face, I seem to think she is the Olay woman. In the middle is a black band with "Olay Essentials" written in it. Underneath in the blue section, it tells us this is a refreshing face was for normal / dry / combo, it doesn't say skin but this must be what it means :)
On the back it tells us that the face was is blended for "gentle everyday washing", it also contains cucumber and Aloe. It promises to give "visible results" and to lift away dirt, make up and refresh. It gives you the directions, which unsurprisingly for a face wash are to massage it into a wet face and gently wash it off with warm water. It also warns you not to get it in your eyes. It goes on to tell us it's dermatologically tested and won't clog pores, and has a phone number under this so you can get in touch with your comments. Under this is a long list of unnatural looking ingredients.
Washing my face
I use this in the shower, I was quite pleased to receive it at christmas as I was nearly out of my normal face wash. I have used this about two to three times a week then since the beginning of this year, and there is still a little in the bottle, although who knows how much? I say two to three times a week, as sometimes in cold weather I don't get a shower, and sometimes I use an exfoliating face wash instead.
This is like a gel, and is clear with a very sweet almost fruity smell, I don't know what it is as it's nor recognisable to me as cucumber or aloe vera. I put a small amount in my hands, rub them together and then rub this on my already wet from the shower face. It doesn't particularly lather up, but this doesn't bother me. I then rinse my face under the shower. This doesn't particularly smell in the brief time it's on my face.
Promises and effects
This cleans my face ok, my skin tends to be normal to oily and I find it sometimes leaves tightness in my skin, so I probably wouldn't recommend it for dry skin. For me it just reminds me to put on moisturiser :)
As for the promises, well yes it kind of meets them.
"gentle everyday washing", yes I think for me it is
"Visible results", if it means visible in the sense it cleans of dirt and make up, so your face looks clean then yes :) If it means anything else then no :)
"doesn't clog pores" it hasn't clogged mine :)
So what do I think
I think this is a nice cleanser, but it's nothing special. It does what I need it to do, but no better then my normal cheaper facial wash.
