Advantages: Gentle enough for daily use and highly effective

Disadvantages: The clinical aroma

For over 30 years I have followed a strict beauty regime where I will cleanse, tone and moisturise. As a consequence, I have spent a small fortune on different products and always welcome the challenge of trying out something new. I enjoy using facial scrubs on my T-zone skin, which is frequently dry on my cheeks and oily on my forehead and nose. My previous experiences with Olay products have always been extremely positive and whilst their Smoothing Face Scrub is marketed towards normal and dry skin I was intrigued to discover how it would work for me and this review discusses my experience.

We are provided with 150 ml of scrub, which is presented in a sturdy plastic tube that neatly sits on a flip top lid. I would point out that the hinged section of the lid is considerably robust and as a result, it did not break during my use of the product. The packaging is considerably appealing as well as being eye-catching and my first impressions were good. The pure white scrub was easily dispensed and offered a good consistency although I must admit that I was a little disappointed at the lack of aroma.

As directed, I gently massaged the cream onto my wet face and neck where I was able to witness the delicate exfoliating micro-beads, which were gentle on my skin. It was at this point that a faint scent appeared, but I cannot say it was favourable as it offered a slight clinical aroma. The scrub offered a fine creamy lather and whilst the beads were gentle, they were highly effective, as I was able to feel them working their magic. I was pleased to note that after the scrub was easily rinsed away with warm water, the surface of my skin was left feeling soft, smooth and thoroughly exfoliated.

I often find them some brands of scrubs can be a little harsh and as a result, cause irritation, such as redness, but the only minor issue I experienced was some slight tightness, which was soon remedied with an application of my favourite moisturiser. The regular use of exfoliating products is a necessity for me as if I omit using them for just a few days I am able to witness a slight rough texture to the surface of my skin, particularly on my chin and the sides of my nose. Thankfully, the rather off-putting clinical aroma vanished as soon as the remainder of the scrub lather disappeared down the plug hole.

A point I find very favourable with this product is that it is gentle enough to be used on a daily basis although I preferred to use on alternate days. Despite my skin being slightly oily on the T-zone and the scrub being intended for normal and dry skin, it was well suited to me and I continued to use the entire tube. As I was nearing the end of the tube, it was necessary to cut it in half to enable me to scrape the remaining contents that had gathered around the lower area, which subsequently provided me with a further six applications.

The scrub should be used within 12 months of opening with the tube being recyclable once empty. I can highly recommend Olay Essentials Smoothing Face Scrub and until 17 September 2012 you can purchase two tubes from Tesco for the price of one for £2.49.

Summary: An effective daily facial scrub from Olay
