Picked up on offer
I picked these wipes up in my local supermarket recently - I tend to stay loyal to Boots cucumber face wipes but as I'd run out and needed some urgently, I went for whatever was on offer! At full price in Boots these cost £2.99 for 25 wipes, but are currently on offer at £1.99, which is also what I paid for them in the supermarket. They are designed to remove and dirt and make-up from the skin.
These come in the usual type of packaging that you would expect with this type of product - a strong plastic packet with a resealable tag on the top. The wipes have a pleasant fresh scent, but it's quite subtle which is good for a facial skincare product I think!
Downhill from here ...
But this is where the positives end for me. I don't consider myself to have particularly sensitive skin, but I find these wipes to be really unpleasantly rough to use on my skin. I have tried both sides of the wipes, but they are very uncomfortable to use and feel really unpleasant! They are a complete no-no for removing eye make-up, for obvious reasons, but I even find these too rough and unpleasant to use on my cheeks - they actually sting a bit and feel horribly scratchy. I also find that my skin feels a bit dry after use too.
Useful for sanding the furniture
I gave these wipes the benefit of the doubt and tried them a couple of times, but I have decided now to definitely give up with them. They are really horrible and I simply can't use them on my face! I should say for the record that they do seem to remove my make-up quite effectively, but they feel so unpleasant on my skin that this is almost irrelevant. I've used wipes of varying quality before and these are by far the worst I have ever used. So I can only give these one star, and I'll be using these wipes to clean the floors instead - or perhaps as sandpaper!
I've used Olay cleansing wipes for many months now. In fact, after trying a few other cheaper brands when my favorite wasn't available, I go back to them every time.
They are more expensive than the norm, but I buy a number of packs when they are on special at Tesco, Superdrug etc, so make sure I don't pay too much for them. They are regularly on sale at half price, or buy one get one free so I take advantage of that and stock up!
The key points for me are purely they do the job I want them to do (remove my make-up) and don't leave the skin feeling greasy. The actual wipe never falls apart on your hands and I've not come across anything yet that it does not remove easily (including waterproof mascara).
There is a very faint pleasant smell from the wipes which disappears once you've finished using them and your skin is drying.
After I have finished using them my skin feels very soft and clean.
The pack is plain and easy to use and the tear back label always reseals so that the contents don't dry out.
Would be really helpful if they produced a bigger pack as well. I travel often and sometimes have to take a couple of packs with me.
I am not particularly brand loyal when it comes to facial wipes and tend to buy whatever is on offer on the time. Whilst shopping in Superdrug I spotted these wet cleansing wipes from the Olay Essentials range priced at just £1.49 (usually price £2.99) and decided to give them a try.
Olay claim their essential cleansing wipes contain mild ingredients which will removing make up (even waterproof) plus they will cleanse and soften the skin. They have been dermatologically tested and are suitable for everyday use. Each pack contains 20 wipes.
The wipes themselves are presented in a blue packet, the brand and product name are displayed on the resealable sticky label. I find the packaging rather boring and uninspiring really and it is not one that would have really jumped up and grab my attention amongst similar products.
General information is given on the back including ingredients, instructions for use and warnings. Once opened the wipes should be used within 12 months.
The wipes themselves are white in colour and of a standard size - similar to a baby wipe. I was really impressed with how thick and strong they felt especially compared to some of the cheaper wipes I have purchased in the past. Fragrance wise - I can only describe as clean and fresh, I find the smell to be quite pleasant enough but perhaps a little too strong.
Using the wipes is easy enough and I don't really feel the need to go onto detail about how this is done. I am not one for using wipes everyday, as some can be rather harsh on my skin, I much prefer the use of cleansing washes. However, I do find a packet of facial wipes is essential in my collection of lotions and potions simply for their convenience, I will use facial wipes when I am in a hurry or if I am away on holiday for example.
I have used around half the packet now and must say I have been rather impressed with these wipes, thankfully I have not experienced any adverse reactions and do feel they are indeed mild as Olay promised. They work well at removing make up with ease and no vigorous scrubbing is required, even on waterproof mascara. The wipes are of a good quality and do not tear or scrunch up during use, I find one wipe is ample for removing all make up from my face although I don't tend to wear much make up anyways. After use, my skin is left feeling clean and fresh, however I do feel the need to moisturise after use.
Overall, I have been rather impressed with Olay Essentials Cleansing Wipes, I would purchase them again if I saw them on offer but full price they are a little expensive.
I take really good care of my skin and have a daily cleansing routine and have done this routine for my years and since I was a young woman. I am now in my 50's. I have bought many brands of facial wipes over the years and tested quite a few during my lifetime. I hadn't bought these wipes before so when I spotted them on special offer I decided to give them a go.
They come in a fairly thick blue plastic wrapper and the name is clearly on the front and so it can be easily spotted on a shelf. The wrapper is very basic looking and not a fancy design. But it is a good enough looking wrapper. I think some brands are losing their design look a lot more over the years to probably help keep the cost down for the product which is something I would rather have. I would rather the price be better than the look of the product if I had a choice.
On the top of the wrapper there is a pull back strip which is very easy to pull back and close back down again to keep the wipes nice and moist. The wipes are white in colour and are rectangle shape, they are kind of stretchy material wipes and quite flexible for wiping over the facial area. They are quite strong wipes and don't tear while using them and don't feel at all flimsy to hold in the hands like some other brands. They are quite comfy wipes to hold and to get a good grip.
They are quite wet wipes but not dripping wet, they are just a nice moisture and feel refreshing on the skin. what did surprise me with these wipes is the smell of them. I was expecting them to smell pleasant but in my opinion they have quite an odd smell, not a refreshing smell like the feel of them on my skin but a smell I cannot fully describe. They kind of have like a chemical smell and a smell I am not really keen on to be honest. I was at least expecting them to smell fresh but they don't. I am not sure if it is just my sense of smell but they don't smell very nice in my own personal opinion.
However apart from the smell of them, they do work well for cleansing my skin. I like to use them for removing some of my make up. I don't use these every day for removing make up because I like to use a cleanser but I do like to use wipes to just remove the surface of the make up and for when I am feeling a little lazy or unwell. I couple of days ago I hadn't felt too well and I used these wipes for refreshing my skin while laying in bed. They helped refresh my skin perfectly and helped my skin feel nice and clean until I felt a little better and could be bothered to do my full cleansing routine.
They are designed for sensitive skin and claim to lift dirt from the skin and gently sweep away the dirt while helping to enhance the skin's natural moisture. These wipes do work well for removing dirt from the skin. Like I said earlier in my review I take very good care of my skin and cleanse it twice a day, every day but I can still see how these wipes lift dirt from the skin because when I have wiped my face with them and not worn make up that day, I can see dirt on the white wipe. It isn't a really dirty wipe but the dirt is noticeable on it. So I would say these do work well for lifting dirt from the skin.
These wipes also hold the moisture really well. The feel wet a while after using them and when I cleansed my face with one and left it on my dresser and then went to throw it in the bin around 20 minutes or so later, I could feel how moist the wipes felt but obviously not as wet as when first taken from the packet but I was amazed how long they kept moist, they don't dry out as quickly like some other brands.
They feel soft on the skin and don't scratch it, I have very dry skin and these wipes haven't caused it to feel any drier than normal. My skin is also sensitive and these are designed for sensitive skin, not caused any rashes or irritations on my skin and have just left my skin feeling fully cleansed and feeling soft.
There are 20 wipes in the pack and I paid just £1.24 for them on offer and they were half the usual price. I would say the full asking price is still a good one and good value for money even for 20 wipes and not as many wipes in the pack compared to some other brands. These ones are good quality and so one wipe is enough to wipe over the face and they work well using both sides of the wipes if you don't have a lot of make up to remove from your skin. So you get more use from the one wipe using both sides of it because they are quite thick.
I really like these wipes and they work well for cleansing my skin and the only negative thing I can say about them is the smell, I just find the smell a little unpleasant. Not sure if I would buy them again in the future because of the smell but if they are on offer I definitely will because they are well worth the reduced price.
I give these 4 stars, going to drop a star only because I am not too keen on the smell of them and that is just my personal opinion, other people may find they smell fine.
Thank you for reading my review and I hope it has been of some help.
Because I have dehydrated and at times sensitive skin when I cleanse my face I usually use a gentle cream cleanser to remove my makeup. However, this isn't ideal when you are travelling as taking cotton wool and a bottle of cleanser with you is a bit of a faff so I tend to take makeup remover wipes instead (while not as gentle its better than sleeping in my makeup). As I have a couple of trips coming up I decided to purchase some more when I was stocking up on shower gel in Body Care. I decided to go for the Olay wipes as they are a well known brand and I hoped they wouldn't be too drying.
Well there is not much to say here you get 20 wipes (which is a little less than some of the other packs I was looking at) in the blue packet with a sticky label on which acts as a seal for the pack so they don't dry out and I have to say it does that job really well as my wipes have never dried out.
Well according to Olay's website they are "a simple step to remove dirt and make-up (even waterproof mascara!). Simply clean, refreshed, soft, beautiful skin everyday!" And while they remove makeup well my skin felt far from refreshed (I have since discovered they now do sensitive wipes but as these were meant to be for normal/dry or combination skin I would have assumed they wouldn't strip too much moisture out).
The wipe itself is very much like a baby wipe (although I found it less wet than a standard baby wipe) and it does a good job at removing makeup even mascara (although I wasn't wearing eyeliner when I used them and I don't wear waterproof mascara so it may not be quite as effective). However, the wipes I had (they may well have been an older batch as I bought them from a cheaper shop but are still very much in date so that shouldn't affect them) felt very rough and while they removed makeup well they did dry my skin out a lot. If felt clean when I had used them but also as all moisture had been stripped from my skin so I had to slather my face in moisturiser straight after.
At £1.87 and £1.20 in Body care these are very much mid-priced wipes but to be honest I would rather use bog standard baby wipes as they are less drying and a lot cheaper as well.
When I ran out of my usual face wipes and needed a new pack I picked up a packet of these Olay wipes in Wilkinsons as my usual ones were not in stock and these were half price at aroubd £1. I would not usually have opted for these as the pack is quite skinny - it only contains 20 wipes - but, as a stop gap, they suited my needs. I also knew Olay was a decent brand and one that is kind to my skin so I felt that they were a pretty safe bet.
The packet is a bright blue in colour with a sticky label on the front that can be peeled back to open the pack and then resealed so that the rest of the wipes remain moist. The wipes are easy to remove one by one - they do not stick together and are about the size of an average tissue. They are really thick too so stand up well to the pressure of rubbing them on your face. they feel quite moist to the touch but are not overly wet so when you wipe your face with them they do not feel cold or wet. They have a light scent which is pleasant and 'clean' smelling but not overpowering.
I find that these remove my make up adequately. They are not the best wipes that I have ever used and I do have to work quite hard to remove the make up - particularly my mascara. But they do obviously remove the make up as the wipe becomes covered in it quite quickly. Having said that, after using these, I do not feel completely confident that all make up and dirt is removed and I will usually follow with a facial wash to feel completely clean - somewhat defeating the convenience of a wipe. The wipes are kind on my skin, which can be sensitive and other wipes have previously led to red 'flare ups' or patchy skin. These cause no such issues and my skin feels absolutely fine both during and after use.
Overall, these are ok wipes but I would probably not purchase again. The wipes are of good quality - thick and resilient - but at full price (around £2) they are very expensive. I also feel that other wipes remove my make up better and that these wipes can not be used as a stand alone product as too much residue would be left on my face.
I usually tend to cleanse tone and moisturise every night but like most people I can be lazy so I always like to have some facial wipes lying around for those lazy times such as when I have been out and can't be bothered to properly remove my make-up.
The wipes come in a reusable pack just like most wipes and I bought them as I normally quite like Olay products so I was pretty sure that these would be a good quality wipe. They are definitely good in the fact that the wipes themselves are a nice quality and thick enough that they don't tear when I am using them but unfortunately I didn't think they were all that good at cleansing.
The wipes are wet but they aren't absolutely drenched in liquid and they are supposed to remove both dirt and make-up from skin including waterproof mascara. In my own personal experience even though they will remove make-up it isn't as simple as just wiping them over my face.
I found that to properly cleanse the make-up from my face it took a lot of work and several wipes at a time to get rid of it all. My mascara was a nightmare to remove with this and I could still see and feel little clumps of it even after having wiped my eyes several times. The same goes for my other make-up in that I would have to really wipe hard to get it removed.
Because I had to wipe really hard I didn't think these were the gentlest wipes to use as they left my skin feeling a little irritated and red afterwards though this was more to do with how hard I had to wipe than the actual formulation in the wipes.
The formulation in the wipes was very moisturising and they didn't dry my skin out but I wasn't overly keen as the wetness dried to feel quite heavy on my skin and I just felt as though my skin wasn't as clean feeling as it could have been.
I would only really use these wipes if there was nothing else available. They will remove make-up but they aren't anywhere near as good as some other wipes you can buy and for the price of them I expected better as they cost £2.50 for 20 wipes.
I don't like to spend a lot of money on facial wipes and sometimes even just pick up baby wipes instead. Yes I know, I'm a cheapskate! but, sometimes I do like to try the brand names so when I saw these in Superdrug for only £1.69 I picked up a couple of packets. Olay being a well known name I thought I was in for a treat.
They come in blue plastic packaging which I would say looks middle of the road not a luxury product but not budget either. There are 20 wet cleansing wipes in each packet and Olay say they are for normal/dry or combination skin. They claim to remove dirt make up and even water proof mascara.
The lid is just the plastic sticky label kind but it does a good job. In both of the packets I bought the label remained sticky and so closed tightly not exposing my wipes to the air which would cause them to dry out.
The wipes are not the largest the have little dimples on them which Olay call "cleansing pockets". The wipes are robust enough that they don't rip and tear and they do feel thick. Olay state they contain aloe vera to sooth the skin although, I can't say I noticed this to be honest.
Using these wipes made my skin feel clean unfortunately, I can't stretch the compliments out any further than that. They did not make me feel refreshed or make my skin feel good in any way just clean. In my opinion they could do with being a little more moist as it took a bit of scrubbing before I was satisfied. Eventually though they did manage to remove my make up and get my face clean. Given that I don't spend my days rolling in mud I though the level of scrubbing involved was a bit much and didn't particularly enjoy the experience.
Also, I don't particularly like the smell. These smell is a bit harsh and chemically, a little clinical. That for me does not make for a nice pampering experience. I would prefer a milder soapy or cucumber scent.
To sum up although, they aren't expensive I had expected a bit more from Olay and don't think I will buy these wipes again. The own brand value ranges in boots are better in my view.
I was very fortunate to receive a beautiful pamper hamper from my husband for Christmas last year where he had hand picked a gorgeous selection of toiletries. In amongst all of the tubs, bottles and tubes were a number of different brands of facial cleansing wipes; one of which belonged to Olay and this review discusses my use of their Essentials Wet Cleansing Wipes.
The sturdy plastic packaging is fairly appealing to the eye with its blue colouring offering a fresh and clean image with minimal marketing clutter. We are advised that the packet contains twenty wipes, which are suitable for normal, dry and combination skin types. As with the majority of products of this nature, there is a small pull back tab, which enables the label situated on the upper section, to be lifted back to reveal a sufficient size opening. Fortunately, the wipes were effortlessly removed where they were individually dispensed unlike some brands where I've pulled out a few in one go and I then have to attempt to push them back into the opening. I was pleased to note, that the tab effectively resealed ensuring that the remaining wipes were kept moist. I had anticipated a clean and refreshing aroma, but I was rather disappointed, as I was barely able to detect any scent.
The good thickness white coloured wipes are sufficiently moist and are enriched with Aloe Vera extract whist offering a reasonable size of approximately 19½ cm x 17 cm, so only one is required for cleansing the face. In my experience of using facial wipes, their appearance is unique, as they contain hundreds of small circular cleansing pockets, which are laid out in rows and according to Olay, they are filled with mild yet effective ingredients, which will remove dirt and impurities. My general uses of wipes are for freshening and cleansing my skin and they were highly effective at carrying out this task and I favoured the fact that any dampness on my skin following use disappeared within seconds with the wipes offering no adverse effects such as dryness or tightness.
I would argue with Olay's claim that the wipes are effective for removing make-up including waterproof mascara, as I struggled to remove black eye-liner and normal black mascara, which smudged into a terrible mess giving me a panda eyes appearance despite me rubbing for what seemed like a lifetime. This in itself was concerning, particularly as I do not like excessively wiping around the delicate eye area for fear of adding to my few fine lines. Due to the amount of time that the wipe was within close proximity to my eye, I had expected my eyes to sting a little, particularly as this has been the case with a few other brands, but I must admit that they were very gentle and I suffered to irritation whatsoever other than being irritated and rather frustrated that I could not remove my eye make up!
In terms of quality, these are probably the best wipes I have ever used on my T-zone skin, as the Aloe Vera extract offered wonderful softness and smoothness and they were very soothing to use during the recent spell of hot weather. However, they were totally ineffective for the removal of eye make up and had I purchased them solely for this purpose I would have been bitterly disappointed. The wipes should be used within 12 months of opening and should be discarded with normal household waste and not flushed down the toilet. The empty packaging can be recycled once empty.
The packet of 20 wipes normally retail at around £2.50, which I think is too expensive, but until 28 August 2012 you can purchase them at Tesco for £1.25. If I were to rate these wipes solely on their skin cleansing and moisturising performance they would receive four stars from me where they lose one due to the price. However, due to the issues with the removal of eye make up I feel I can award them only three stars. Would I purchase these again? Yes, in fact I have repurchased them whilst Tesco currently have their offer, but I will only use them on my skin.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
