Advantages: Protects skin, smells lovely, matte skin, good foundation base
I received this as a 3ml sample in November 2003 and absolutely loved it. I promptly received the full size as a Christmas present and have been using it ever since. If I could have only one skincare product for the rest of my life, itíd be this: let me tell you why.
WHITE TEA SKIN GUARDIAN
To the majority of people, the idea of using yet another product before your moisturiser probably sounds like a lot of unnecessary hassle. I would have agreed with you before I used this. However, serum/pre-base/primer is probably one of the professional makeup artistsí best kept secrets. Apart from all the other magic it works, it helps prolong the life of your makeup throughout the day and provide a smooth base before application.
This product comes from Origins 'A Perfect World' range. Essentially, it is a prevention tool rather than a cure. It claims to help ďbanish youth offenders long before they cause visible signs of oxidation, deterioration, dehydrationĒ. So itís a great product for anyone in their 20s/30s wishing to prevent signs of aging before they even begin. I donít use it for this reason alone (Iím 22) but it does help to know that it could be doing something to banish the inevitable wrinkles for longer!
The container is trademark Origins: classy but understated, predominantly creamy white with green text. It comes in a 30ml pump tube which looks rather small for the price (but thatíll explain itself later). The tube has a cute little pump dispenser which saves you sticking your bacteria covered hands in a pot every day. In addition to this there is a plastic lid to prevent it depressing itself and stop dirt getting in. As per usual with Origins, their outer packaging is made from 100% recycled cardboard but still manages to look gorgeous with an attractive leaf on the outside.
The pump is wonderfully smooth in its action so you can use as little or as much as you like (about a half pump works for me). The serum (itís not a cream) is a rich white/cream coloured gel, probably unlike anything youíve seen before. Itís so rich that it wonít drip through your fingers. However, once you transfer it to your face, all that thickness transforms into an extraordinarily soft matte velvet texture. Unlike BeneFitís Dr Feelgood, it doesnít sit heavily on the surface of your skin: it becomes as one with your face, so much so that you just want to sit and stroke your skin (no Iím not weird, itís just SO soft!)
The smell is fantastic, but delicate. It smells vaguely like tea tree but slightly gentler Ė as with all Origins products, very natural. If you donít like the idea of the smell (you must be crazy?!) donít worry, you canít smell it after youíve applied it to your face.
If youíre among the more nature-conscious of us, fret not, Origins pride themselves on being more natural based than chemical based in comparison with other companies, ďWe do no harm to animals and do no animal testing for reasons of good conscience. Additionally we insist that our suppliers do not test raw materials on animals on our behalf. We conduct our own, independent tests to assure that our products and ingredients are safe and worthy of your trust.Ē
You can either use this on its own to improve the texture of your skin before moisturiser if going au-naturel or apply it before makeup. If Iím having a period of very good skin I find that this does actually improve the appearance and texture of my skin if I use it after cleansing, under my moisturiser. It just finishes it off by slightly reducing any uneven skin tone and reducing my pore size (if they were enlarged). However, if my skin is not so good I donít expect it to work miracles and will use it under tinted moisturiser.
It provides a flawless base on which to apply foundation, even when using my powder based one. I find that the serum makes it go on smoother and stay on perfectly all day. One massive advantage to this product is that I find it will keep my skin matte all day Ė something which can be quite a challenge on bad skin days. It is perfect for all skin types and definitely doesnít clog pores (I know, as mine clog very easily!)
PRICE AND AVAILABLITY
Despite writing about all these beauty things I donít actually use them non stop. I use this serum about 3 times a week maximum and it the 30ml tube will last me around 12 months. Of course it depends how youíd use it, because if you used it AM & PM 7 days a week itíd be considerably less. It costs £25 for 30ml which is expensive but once youíve used it youíll understand why if I could only have one beauty product it would be this - it's won many beauty awards so I can't be totally wrong!
Origins is available in some department stores and separate Origins shops. The store locator is here: http://www.origins.com/locate/index.html
